zero (n.)
Entries linking to zero
late 14c., “arithmetical symbol for zero,” from Old French cifre “nought, zero,” Medieval Latin cifra, which, with Spanish and Italian cifra, ultimately is from Arabic sifr “zero,” literally “empty, nothing,” from safara “to be empty;” a loan-translation of Sanskrit sunya-s “empty.” Klein says Modern French chiffre is from Italian cifra.
The word came to Europe with Arabic numerals. From “zero,” it came to mean “any numeral” (early 15c.), then (first in French and Italian) “secret way of writing; coded message” (a sense first attested in English 1520s), because early codes often substituted numbers for letters. Meaning “the key to a cipher or secret writing” is by 1885, short for cipher key (by 1835).

Spiritual Meaning of Numbers
‘Numbers and numerical proportions have a certain meaning for the cosmos and the world. It is in numbers, we might say, that the harmony that dwells through space is expressed’
Rudolf Steiner, Occult Signs and Symbols
The Symbolism of Zero 0
It took Europe relatively long to accept the concept of zero. Accepting zero, enlightened minds of the time finally acknowledged the possibility of an idea that has no form and does not exist. For some Monastic Orders Zero provided a framework for the development of atheism.
Zero is associated with nil, non-being, nothingness, emptiness, and with zero defining non-quantitative as non-existent, everything non-quantifiable could now be defined as non-existent – including God.
Accepting zero led to the invention of relative numbers, negative quantities, infinite decimal points, abstract and irrational, imaginary numbers. It led to the birth of complex mathematics.
0 is symbolised by the Tarot card called: Fool, the Element of Air (aka the Joker, the Liar, the Clown, the Prankster.)
Represented by the HEBREW LETTER: Aleph = Bull or Ox. It is the sound of free breath, unstructured, unconditioned Silence, Tao of Taoists or Kundalini Life Force of Hindus.

ZERO
The Cosmic Egg from which all things originate. The absence of quality, quantity or mass. Absolute freedom from every limitation. A symbol of the infinite and eternal Conscious Energy, itself No-Thing, though manifested in everything. That which was, is, and shall be forever. In it are included all imaginable and unimaginable possibilities, but it transcends them all.
The Qabalists call it: (a) No-Thing; (b) The Boundless; (c) Limitless Light. Pure Conscious Energy., above and beyond thought, to us it is Superconsciousness.

Druid’s egg
AKA: anguinum; glain y nidir; mân macal.
According to Pliny’s Natural History, XXIX.52.:
There is also another kind of egg,of much renown in the Gallic provinces, but ignored by the Greeks. In the summer, numberless snakes entwine themselves into a ball, held together by a secretion from their bodies and by their spittle.this is called anguinum. The Druids say that hissing serpents throw this up into the air, and that it must be caught in a cloak, and not allowed to touch the ground; and that one must instantly take flight on horse-back, as the serpents will pursue until some stream cuts them out. It may be tested, they say, by seeing if it flaots against the current of a river, even though it be set in gold. But as it is the way of magicians to cast a cunning veil about their frauds, they pretend that these eggs can only be taken on a certain day of the moon, as though it rested with mankind to make the moon and the serpents accord as to the moment of the operation. I myself, however, have seen one of these eggs; it was round, and about as large as a smallish apple; the shell was cartalaginous, and pocked like the arms of a polypus.
Apparently, the druid’s egg was believed to create a favorable outcome in courts of law; enough so that the Romans outlawed carrying one into any courtroom, and would put to death anyone caught carrying such an object.
In recent times, there has been some debate as to what Pliny is describing: is it made of glass? is it a type of sea shell? Lately, there have been some glass baubles found in Wales and Scotland that some claim are the “eggs” in question, but whether they actually are or not is unknowable.
In Wales, there is still some belief in the objects; they call them mân macal (snare stones), and glain y nidir (the snake’s jewel).

The Origin of Zero
Much ado about nothing: First a placeholder and then a full-fledged number, zero had many inventors
-
By John Matson on
“There are at least two discoveries, or inventions, of zero,” says Charles Seife, author of Zero: The Biography of a Dangerous Idea(Viking, 2000). “The one that we got the zero from came from the Fertile Crescent.” It first came to be between 400 and 300 B.C. in Babylon, Seife says, before developing in India, wending its way through northern Africa and, in Fibonacci’s hands, crossing into Europe via Italy.
Initially, zero functioned as a mere placeholder—a way to tell 1 from 10 from 100, to give an example using Arabic numerals. “That’s not a full zero,” Seife says. “A full zero is a number on its own; it’s the average of –1 and 1.”
It began to take shape as a number, rather than a punctuation mark between numbers, in India in the fifth century A.D., says Robert Kaplan, author of The Nothing That Is: A Natural History of Zero(Oxford University Press, 2000). “It isn’t until then, and not even fully then, that zero gets full citizenship in the republic of numbers,” Kaplan says. Some cultures were slow to accept the idea of zero, which for many carried darkly magical connotations.
The second appearance of zero occurred independently in the New World, in Mayan culture, likely in the first few centuries A.D. “That, I suppose, is the most striking example of the zero being devised wholly from scratch,” Kaplan says.
Kaplan pinpoints an even earlier emergence of a placeholder zero,a pair of angled wedges used by the Sumerians to denote an empty number column some 4,000 to 5,000 years ago.
But Seife is not certain that even a placeholder zero was in use so early in history. “I’m not entirely convinced,” he says, “but it just shows it’s not a clear-cut answer.” He notes that the history of zero is too nebulous to clearly identify a lone progenitor. “In all the references I’ve read, there’s always kind of an assumption that zero is already there,” Seife says. “They’re delving into it a little bit and maybe explaining the properties of this number, but they never claim to say, ‘This is a concept that I’m bringing forth.‘”
Kaplan’s exploration of zero’s genesis turned up a similarly blurred web of discovery and improvement. “I think there’s no question that one can’t claim it had a single origin,” Kaplan says. “Wherever you’re going to get placeholder notation, it’s inevitable that you’re going to need some way to denote absence of a number.”

Who Invented the Zero?
BY: HISTORY STAFF
UPDATED: | ORIGINAL:
It might seem like an obvious piece of any numerical system, but the zero is a surprisingly recent development in human history. In fact, this ubiquitous symbol for “nothing” didn’t even find its way to Europe until as late as the 12th century.
Zero’s origins most likely date back to the “fertile crescent” of ancient Mesopotamia. Sumerian scribes used spaces to denote absences in number columns as early as 4,000 years ago, but the first recorded use of a zero-like symbol dates to sometime around the third century B.C. in ancient Babylon. The Babylonians employed a number system based around values of 60, and they developed a specific sign—two small wedges—to differentiate between magnitudes in the same way that modern decimal-based systems use zeros to distinguish between tenths, hundreds and thousandths. A similar type of symbol cropped up independently in the Americas sometime around A.D. 350, when the Mayans began using a zero marker in their calendars.
From India, the zero made its way to China and back to the Middle East, where it was taken up by the mathematician Mohammed ibn-Musa al-Khowarizmi around 773. He studied and synthesized Indian arithmetic and showed how zero functioned in the system of formulas he called ‘al-jabr’—today known as algebra. By the 10th century, the zero had entered the Arabic numeral system in a form resembling the oval shape we use today.
The zero continued to migrate for another few centuries before finally reaching Europe sometime around the 1100s. Thinkers like the Italian mathematician Fibonacci helped introduce zero to the mainstream, and it later figured prominently in the work of Rene Descartes along with Sir Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz’s invention of calculus. Since then, the concept of “nothing” has continued to play a role in the development of everything from physics and economics to engineering and computing.
The Power of Zero
FROM THE LECTURE SERIES: ZERO TO INFINITY — A HISTORY OF NUMBERS
By Professor Edward B. Burger, PhD, Southwestern University
How do you multiply using Roman numerals? How would you write the number 10,030 without using zero? A compact, place-based (or positional) number system with a symbol for zero opens the floodgates for arithmetic calculations and the discovery of new numbers.
With only 10 symbols, we have the machinery to describe new numbers that grow beyond our imagination. Here, we’ll explore the origins of zero and the development of our modern decimal system. With a powerful positional number system in place, humankind was finally equipped with the tools necessary to begin the development of modern mathematics.

We couldn’t live without ‘zero’ – but we once had to
https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20161206-we-couldnt-live-without-zero-but-we-once-had-to
According to maths author Alex Bellos, India was the perfect setting: “The idea of nothing being something was already deep in their culture. If you think about ‘nirvana’ it’s the state of nothingness – all your worries and desires go. So why not have a symbol for nothing?”
That symbol was called ‘shunya’, a word still used today to mean both nothing as a concept, and zero as a number.
Back in India, the astronomer Brahmagupta was the driving force behind zero’s path to greatness in the 7th Century. In mathematics, not only could shunya be used as a placeholder to signify nothing in that position, but you could use it in calculations just like any other number. You could add it, subtract it, multiply it. Division remains a bit tricky, but that particular challenge spurred a whole new wonderful field of mathematics, as we’ll see later.
Once zero had gained a foothold in South Asia, it crossed into the Middle East, where it was championed by Islamic scholars, and created part of the Arabic number system that we use today. (Some historians say that zero’s origins in India have been unfairly airbrushed out of history, and we should really call it the ‘Indo-Arabic’ number system).
However, after its incredible spiritual and intellectual beginnings, zero faced a real struggle. It crossed into Europe at the same time as Christian crusades against Islam. Any Arab ideas, even in mathematics, were met with widespread scepticism and mistrust.
In 1299, zero was banned in Florence, along with all Arabic numerals, because they were said to encourage fraud. Zero could easily be doctored to become nine, and why not add a few zeros on the end of a receipt to inflate the price?
What’s more, zero was seen to set a dangerous precedent because it was the gateway to negative numbers. And negative numbers legitimised the concept of debt and money lending. (which God condemns)
Nothing to celebrate
Incredibly it wasn’t until the 15th Century that zero, along with all the other Arabic numbers, was finally accepted. Just to put it in context, by then Oxford University in England had been around for centuries and the printing press was just up and running.
Both, no doubt, helped zero to flourish as an idea in mathematics, and it formed the basis of some of the most incredible scientific and technological methods we use today. By the 17th Century, zero emerged triumphant as the basis of Cartesian co-ordinates (the x and y graphs you meet in school) invented by the French philosopher Descartes. His system is still employed in everything from engineering to computer graphics.
As Bellos wonderfully describes: “The Renaissance was really sparked by the arrival of the Arabic number system, containing zero. And when that happened, the black and white world of arithmetic suddenly became glorious and technicolour.
However, during the Renaissance, zero became so powerful it caused passions to ignite once again. I mentioned the problem of division by zero earlier. The even trickier notion of dividing zero by zero is the basis of one of my favourite areas of mathematics – calculus. Calculus is the mathematics of change and gives us some nifty tricks that allow you to forecast what might happen in the future – from the spread of Ebola to the movement of the stock market. A powerful tool, indeed.
Here’s how calculus works in one paragraph – imagine drawing a graph of something that changes over time. Let’s say it’s how much you are paying attention to reading this article. Since your attention might stray over time (around that bit about Cartesian coordinates, for instance) the line will wibble and wobble around. But if you zoom in close enough to any part of the curve it will still look like a straight line. Zoom in further and further until you’re taking infinitesimally small chunks of the curve – chunks approaching zero size – then every kind of crazy relationship become nice neat straight lines, and easy to deal with mathematically.
You can use calculus to describe how pretty much anything changes – from the movement of the stock market over time to the dispersal of medicine through our body. Without the concept of zero as a number, none of this would be possible.
So let’s raise a glass of perfectly spherical bubbles to the most well rounded, and most powerful, number in history.—

All things in this world begins with a zero
Zero is the number people often feel, more so than one, isn’t it true? Because more zeroes means more prosperity.

CHENNAI: Zero is the number people often feel, more so than one, isn’t it true? Because more zeroes means more prosperity. However from a spiritual perspective, zero is the point from which all other numbers spring forth. Since the zero also visually resembles a circle, it is symbolic of eternity, evolution, infinity. Like an atom is to the physical world, a soul to the spiritual world, the zero is of symbolic importance to both the worlds. In Hindi zero is called shunya meaning a void, the supreme state of awareness where everything comes to nothingness. Spiritual seekers perceive this state as mukti or nirvana in which the soul is restored to its original state free from all impressions, influences and impurities of the earthly life.It is said that everything returns to zero or nothingness before being created anew.
Hence, most spiritual teachers emphasize on attaining the zero state i.e. emptying the mind of all worldly thoughts and detaching from the awareness of physical body in order to attain liberation and peace. The number zero has very special functions in calculation. Anything added to or subtracted from zero remains unchanged.Any number multiplied to zero gives zero while any number divided by zero gives infinity.Interestingly, when we add zeroes after a number, its value grows ten times. These specialities can be ascribed to Almighty Supreme who remains unchanged in the cycle of eternity. He does not enjoy the fruits of karma and nothing can be added, subtracted, multiplied or divided from His powers. When we multiply our powers by linking ourself with Him, we too become a zero like Him filled with all divine virtues. So let us try our best to remain in Zero state and achieve higher state of consciousness to live a life that is minus all worries, tension & stress.

I found it curious that the virtual reality head gear company by the name Oculus changed its logo recently.
Oculus redesign
Oculus is a tech firm developing a virtual reality headset called the Rift. Oculus was acquired by Facebook in 2014 for $2B USD.
The Oculus logo was recently changed, and the result is what I hope I’d come up with. As simple as they come, but with a distinctive, appropriate idea — the stylised o also mimicking the shape of an Oculus headset, and the shape of the slider on the underside looks just like the symbol, too.
There’s a brief reveal video for the Oculus Rift embedded below.
Here’s the old Oculus logo lockup for comparison. | And the new. |
The website and headset show both the symbol and the wordmark on their own, but in fairly close proximity, so placing the o alongside Oculus seems unnecessary. I’m unsure where the lockup would be used.

The design was a collaboration between Cory Schmitz, Mackey Saturday, Nicolaus Taylor, and Jon Malkemus.

A compass tells the direction in which the ship is going or the direction of any other object.
An azimuth mirror is used in conjunction with a compass.
This device enables the operator to measure bearings of celestial and terrestrial objects.
Purpose of Azimuth mirrors (Azimuth Circle)
Azimuth mirror is used for taking the bearings of terrestrial and celestial objects.
By the use of mirrors or lenses or prisms or combination of all these, the equipment allows both, the readings of the compass card, and the object to be seen at the same time and in the same direction.
Thus the bearing of the object can be read out.
Azimuth mirror is therefore portable equipment which is placed over a magnetic or gyro compass for measuring bearings of terrestrial and celestial objects.
Sight Vanes (Near vane & far vane) |
Levels Indicate if the ring is level with the horizon. NOTE: Bearings read when the ring is not level are inaccurate. |
Allow the observer to take bearings of objects by aligning the two vanes to the object.
The near vane contains a peep sight while the far vane contains a vertical wire. The far vane is mounted on top of a housing that contains a reflective mirror inside enabling the observer to read the bearing from the reflected portion of the compass card. |
Concave mirror
Reflects the sun’s rays onto the prism housing on the other side of the ring when the observer is taking an azimuth of the sun. |
Reflector vane Allow the observer to observe azimuths of celestial bodies (stars and planets) at various altitudes by picking up their reflection in the black mirror. When the body is observed, its reflection appears behind the vertical wire in the far vane. | Prism Housing Directs the beam of light from the concave mirror downward in a narrow beam onto the compass card enabling the observer to read the azimuth to the sun. |
In a matrix, which is termed “The Circle of Mirrors”, we see the Letter M holding a key “center position”.
The Circle of Mirrors is derived from placing the symmetrical letters of the Alphabet into their “Pi positions”.
The Letters M and W are 13 and 23 respective. 13+23 = 36. The X to the right of the W is 10. 36 * 10 = 360 degrees of a circle. The V to the left of the W is 5. 360+5 is 365 days to a year.
The “I”, which shares a value (phonetic and mathematic) with Y, is in a “leap” or “elevated row”, which may then be added and termed as a “leap year”, for I is 1 and in a leap year we must add one day to bring the Solar calendar back into balance. Pharaoh’s serpent or Pharaoh’s snake is a very interesting but also very dangerous pyrotechnic demonstration, made from the thermal decomposition of mercury(II) thiocyanate, which produces a large mass of coiling serpent-like lightweight solid. A small blueish or slight orange flame which accompanies the combustion. The resulting “snake” can range from dark graphite or bluish grey to light tan in color with the inside generally much darker than the outside.
The reaction occurs in several stages:[1]
Igniting mercury thiocyanate causes it to form an insoluble brown mass that is primarily carbon nitride (C3N4), with mercury sulfide and carbon disulfide also being produced.
- 2 Hg(SCN)2 → 2 HgS + CS2 + C3N4
Carbon disulfide burns releasing carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide:
- CS2 + 3 O2 → CO2 + 2 SO2
The heated C3N4 partially breaks down to form nitrogen gas and cyanogen:
- 2 C3N4 → 3 (CN)2 + N2
Mercury sulfide reacts with oxygen to form mercury vapor and sulfur dioxide. If the reaction is performed inside a container, a grey film of mercury coating on its inner surface can be observed.
- HgS + O2 → Hg + SO2
The resulting solid is extremely light and can be broken easily.
