These technologies at which you all marvel, are nothing new. They have been before beginning in the ancient past. They are the arts arts and crafts taught to mankind by the fallen angels.

I always wondered what was meant when God said “now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do”. NOW, I KNOW. Sadly, due to my calling, I have to look into all of this stuff. Everyday, I have to focus on what they are doing and what they are able to do. I have to tell you, it is very scary and disheartening. All while mentioning that DARPA using Deep Brain Stimulation + is seeking to create super soldiers.
Deep Brain Stimulation bears a similar resemblance to the Mark of the Beast. After the implant has taken place a single electric pulse targets regions of the brain and interferes with neural activity in the target area, which can alter decisions, symptoms, behavior, and morals. The implant is formally called an implanted pulse generator or an IPG, which can be calibrated by technicians, doctors, and qualified nurses.
As mentioned in the video, DBS+ can be calibrated to alter how a soldier responds on the battlefield and or after the war. The machine would give the military industrial complex more control over soldiers. In reading the above information, one has to question whether some of the patents are being used in various microwave technologies, smart gadgets and appliances, and possibly even with weather geoengineering.
Those patents confirm scientific information and applications, I think, which ought to be brought to the attention of all fifty state public utility commissions regarding electromagnetic frequencies; how their applications at various low hertz levels function; and their effects on the human organism especially since utility companies are exposing customers to electromagnetic frequencies from smart meters, which are making people sick, disoriented and electromagnetically hypersensitive at frequencies thousands times faster than the frequencies in the patents granted above.
If those patent low frequencies can cause various human biological reactions, what’s going on from EMFs in the gigahertz ranges, which AMI Smart Meters operate at?
One Hertz (Hz) equals one cycle per second. One kilohertz (KHz) is equivalent to one thousand cycles per second. One megahertz (MHz) equals one million cycles per second. A Gigahertz (GHz) is a frequency equal to one billion hertz or cycles per second. See what I mean?
One has to keep in mind the human body’s electromagnetic frequency range is 7.83 Hz!

The Pentagon has confirmed it’s testing lasers that can talk.

Weapons researchers at the Department of Defense have been working on less deadly means of warfare, including this laser weapon that can send brief messages — in the form of audible speech — across short distances — and through glass. The device is being developed as part of a military initiative, the Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate.
To make what seems like science fiction a reality, scientists use a phenomenon of physics called the Laser-Induced Plasma formation. First, they fire a powerful laser that creates a ball of plasma. Then, a second laser works to oscillate the plasma, which then creates sound waves.
Done right, these laser bursts can mimic human language, chief scientist Dave Law tells Military Times, adding that the technology could be ready for battle in as few as five years.
A video shared by the news site features the weapon saying, “Stop or we’ll be forced to fire upon you.”
Scientists say these laser-grams will soon be able to beam hundreds of miles away, making it possible to send orders down from an aircraft or caution trespassers against entering military bases (looking at you, Area 51 raiders!) — all the while keeping service men and women out of harm’s way.
This isn’t the first time lasers had something to say: Researchers at MIT are developing a laser for public use that works by causing water molecules in the air to vibrate, producing sound. A beam would be sent close to a particular person’s ear, sending a message that would be imperceptible to others nearby.
Eventually, the Pentagon plans to develop the technology for slightly more hostile uses. In the clip, reporter Todd South also notes the lasers won’t hurt people if they become the target, but will produce an uncomfortable prickling sensation that will get their attention — if the disembodied voices don’t scare them off first.
They could also be used as a continuous flash-bang grenade, which produce bursts of blinding light and deafening sound. They won’t kill you; they’ll just make you miserable.

The Pentagon is advancing work on plasma technology that can deliver intelligible speech to nearby locations and create non-lethal deterrents.
Instead of beaming a flashing light or shouting over a loudspeaker to keep people away from sensitive areas, new technology being developed could allow troops to fire a laser that can form a “plasma ball” that talks to the potential intruders.
The Laser Induced Plasma Effect program is part of the Joint Non-lethal Weapons Directorate program to find ways to deter, stun, basically stop adversaries short of killing them.
Use of directed energy, or lasers, includes heating up a target’s skin to extremely uncomfortable levels without burning them, blasting confusing noises or giving voice commands such as, “Stop or we’ll be forced to fire upon you.”

It can pass through glass into a building but not yet penetrate other solid barriers, so in its initial stages, the technology would be best used to protect static areas such as forward bases or permanent installations.
But with the right power source setup, a device could be mounted to a small vehicle and make for mobile crowd control or another tool for vehicle patrols to keep people away from convoys.
Researchers such as Brittany Lynn, a scientist with Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific, are fine tuning how to pass sound waves through the laser and they recently completed another round of testing in June.
Part of that involves tweaking algorithms to create human speech in the right wavelengths.
The next steps, said Dave Law, chief scientist with the directorate, is to push distances out of the short range of a laboratory setting to 100 meters, then to multiple kilometers. Law gave an optimistic timeline of about five years before the tech could be through readiness levels and passed on to troops.
This past year, Lynn told Military Times, they’ve been adjusting high and low frequencies to mimic human speech.
Early speech mimicking this year has provided a boost to the program that Law sees as promising. That’s because once that is solved, the distance problem is much less difficult.
“Now I can put it anywhere. Range doesn’t make any difference,” Law said in an interview with Military Times last year. “Put plasma at a target, modulate it and it can create a voice.”
At the same time, the setup can also act as a reusable flashbang that can pulse 155 decibel frequencies near continuously, as compare to standard flashbang grenades that can make one, sometimes two loud blasts to disorient people.
That increases Tactics, Techniques and Procedures use of flashbangs from seconds to minutes, Law said.
For voice commands, the quality doesn’t have to be crystal clear to get the message across, Lynn said. A mobile phone speaker runs at about 8 kilohertz and the human voice ranges to 20 kilohertz. So, there’s leeway in the fidelity of the sound.
The laser causes a similar effect that a jet airplane does when it creates a sonic boom, both Law and Lynn said.
“We’re doing the same thing but instead of doing an airplane, we have those electrons,” Law said.
The hurdle is creating the effect in a portable 5- to 10-kHz laser, Lynn said.
The laser strips away electrons and creates a white ball. That’s what the recipient would see, or feel, on the other end of the laser device.
The skin heating option works in a very similar way, but to a different effect.
The laser-induced plasma weapon uses very high-energy lasers at a very short pulse rate to strip the electrons off a gas, creating plasma.
That is then used to poke through clothing and drill smaller than microscopic holes in a person’s skin. The drilling doesn’t cause damage but it does set off nerve responses, making the person very uncomfortable.
“It’s basically going to hurt,” Law said.
Past efforts hit some of the objectives but couldn’t quite get the voice commands to work, according to a posting on the Small Business Innovation Research program.

Hospitals and airplanes ban the use of cell phones,because their electromagnetic transmissions can interfere with sensitive electrical devices. Could the brain also fall into that category? Of course, all our thoughts, sensations and actions arise from bioelectricity generated by neurons and transmitted through complex neural circuits inside our skull. Electrical signals between neurons generate electric fields that radiate out of brain tissue as electrical waves that can be picked up by electrodes touching a person’s scalp. Measurements of such brainwaves in EEGs provide powerful insight into brain function and a valuable diagnostic tool for doctors. Indeed, so fundamental are brainwaves to the internal workings of the mind, they have become the ultimate, legal definition drawing the line between life and death.
Brainwaves change with a healthy person’s conscious and unconscious mental activity and state of arousal. But scientists can do more with brainwaves than just listen in on the brain at work-they can selectively control brain function by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). This technique uses powerful pulses of electromagnetic radiation beamed into a person’s brain to jam or excite particular brain circuits.
Although a cell phone is much less powerful than TMS, the question still remains: Could the electrical signals coming from a phone affect certain brainwaves operating in resonance with cell phone transmission frequencies? After all, the caller’s cerebral cortex is just centimeters away from radiation broadcast from the phone’s antenna. Two studies provide some revealing news.
The first, led by Rodney Croft, of the Brain Science Institute, Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, tested whether cell phone transmissions could alter a person’s brainwaves. The researchers monitored the brainwaves of 120 healthy men and women while a Nokia 6110 cell phone—one of the most popular cell phones in the world—was strapped to their head. A computer controlled the phone’s transmissions in a double-blind experimental design, which meant that neither the test subject nor researchers knew whether the cell phone was transmitting or idle while EEG data were collected. The data showed that when the cell phone was transmitting, the power of a characteristic brain-wave pattern called alpha waves in the person’s brain was boosted significantly. The increased alpha wave activity was greatest in brain tissue directly beneath to the cell phone, strengthening the case that the phone was responsible for the observed effect.
Alpha Waves of Brain
Alpha waves fluctuate at a rate of eight to 12 cycles per second (Hertz). These brainwaves reflect a person’s state of arousal and attention. Alpha waves are generally regarded as an indicator of reduced mental effort, “cortical idling” or mind wandering. But this conventional view is perhaps an oversimplification. Croft, for example, argues that the alpha wave is really regulating the shift of attention between external and internal inputs. Alpha waves increase in power when a person shifts his or her consciousness of the external world to internal thoughts; they also are the key brainwave signatures of sleep.
Cell Phone Insomnia
If cell phone signals boost a person’s alpha waves, does this nudge them subliminally into an altered state of consciousness or have any effect at all on the workings of their mind that can be observed in a person’s behavior? In the second study, James Horne and colleagues at the Loughborough University Sleep Research Centre in England devised an experiment to test this question. The result was surprising. Not only could the cell phone signals alter a person’s behavior during the call, the effects of the disrupted brain-wave patterns continued long after the phone was switched off.
“This was a completely unexpected finding,” Horne told me. “We didn’t suspect any effect on EEG [after switching off the phone]. We were interested in studying the effect of mobile phone signals on sleep itself.” But it quickly became obvious to Horne and colleagues in preparing for the sleep-research experiments that some of the test subjects had difficulty falling asleep.
Horne and his colleagues controlled a Nokia 6310e cell phone—another popular and basic phone—attached to the head of 10 healthy but sleep-deprived men in their sleep research lab. (Their sleep had been restricted to six hours the previous night.) The researchers then monitored the men’s brainwaves by EEG while the phone was switched on and off by remote computer, and also switched between “standby,” “listen” and “talk” modes of operation for 30 minute intervals on different nights. The experiment revealed that after the phone was switched to “talk” mode a different brain-wave pattern, called delta waves (in the range of one to four Hertz), remained dampened for nearly one hour after the phone was shut off. These brainwaves are the most reliable and sensitive marker of stage two sleep—approximately 50 percent of total sleep consists of this stage—and the subjects remained awake twice as long after the phone transmitting in talk mode was shut off. Although the test subjects had been sleep-deprived the night before, they could not fall asleep for nearly one hour after the phone had been operating without their knowledge.
Although this research shows that cell phone transmissions can affect a person’s brainwaves with persistent effects on behavior, Horne does not feel there is any need for concern that cell phones are damaging. The arousal effects the researchers measured are equivalent to about half a cup of coffee, and many other factors in a person’s surroundings will affect a night’s sleep as much or more than cell phone transmissions.
“The significance of the research,” he explained, is that although the cell phone power is low, “electromagnetic radiation can nevertheless have an effect on mental behavior when transmitting at the proper frequency.” He finds this fact especially remarkable when considering that everyone is surrounded by electromagnetic clutter radiating from all kinds of electronic devices in our modern world. Cell phones in talk mode seem to be particularly well-tuned to frequencies that affect brainwave activity. “The results show sensitivity to low-level radiation to a subtle degree. These findings open the door by a crack for more research to follow. One only wonders if with different doses, durations, or other devices, would there be greater effects?”

The laughter is just part of what is remarkable about talking with Maria A. Oquendo, MD, PhD. With some people all it takes is a question or two and it’s like flipping a switch; they’re happy to go on and on about whatever’s on their mind. But Oquendo has a quality of really listening. She wants to figure out exactly what you want to know. She appears to choose her words, and her answers, very carefully. Everything she says seems to express, at its core, the importance of clarity. The quality of her attention is slightly unnerving.
Most days, though Oquendo’s personality exudes cheerfulness, that focused attention nevertheless is directed on exploring the darkest, most troubling recesses of the human mind: suicide.
It’s the tenth leading cause of death in the United States. And it’s on the rise: The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported in 2016 that the nation’s suicide rate hit a nearly 30-year high, and this June noted that rates continued rising in every state.
Oquendo, an internationally renowned expert on mood disorders with a special focus on suicidal behavior and global mental health, joined Penn last year as the department chair and Ruth Meltzer Professor of Psychiatry at the Perelman School of Medicine. Before that, she served as a professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University and research psychiatrist at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. In 2016-2017, she served as president of the American Psychiatric Association, the largest psychiatric association in the world with more than 37,000 physician members. She can boast (but generally doesn’t boast) three decades’ worth of awards and honors in her field. She began her career as a clinician, but since launching her research career 20 years ago has been continuously funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, has authored over 400 peer-reviewed publications, and became a member of the National Academy of Medicine.
No Easy Explanation
People who die by suicide are young and old, rich and poor. They are people’s spouses, siblings, schoolmates, co-workers, babysitters, grandparents, neighbors. They have an obvious mental or physical illness or seem perfectly well. They appear to have lonely, isolated lives or fulfilling ones.
When they go, they may leave behind not just grief but guilt and questions. Those who knew them tend to speculate and try to explain why it happened. They may attribute it to a job loss, divorce, serious illness, or other hardship. I heard X’s wife was unfaithful… Y’s parents wouldn’t pay to send her to college… It was probably because Z got fired…
But that’s too simplistic, Oquendo says. The motivations for suicide are much more complex than people realize (and still not completely understood). “For many years, there’s been a conceptualization of suicide as a catastrophic reaction to something that goes awry in a person’s life,” she says. “But that doesn’t really capture exactly what’s happening.”
She gets impatient with news accounts that implicate an external cause, like drought causing a spate of suicide deaths among farmers, and will occasionally pen a letter in response. “No, that’s not why the farmers are committing suicide,” she says. “I mean, okay, that doesn’t help, but it’s an interaction between some kind of psychiatric situation and the environmental stressor.”
Oquendo’s key studies have drawn on PET and MRI imaging to map brain abnormalities in mood disorders and suicidal behavior. One of the important things we now understand about suicide, she says, is that there’s a biological, genetic component. Scientists are finding physical abnormalities in the brains of people who have died by their own hand. These differences have also been detected in the brains of individuals who have tried to harm themselves.
She cautions, though, that while researchers can see differences across groups of people, the findings aren’t yet at the stage where a brain scan on a single individual can yield a diagnosis. So unfortunately you can’t just bring someone in for medical imaging to find out if they’re at risk.
Biomarkers to predict suicidal behavior, especially highly lethal behavior, are urgently needed in order to improve prevention efforts, Oquendo and her co-authors stated in a landmark 2016 brain-imaging study published in JAMA Psychiatry. In the paper, the researchers determined that individuals who have greater elevations in their serotonin 1A receptor are more likely to engage in more medically damaging suicidal behavior in the next two years.
The receptor is “a marker of serotonin ‘tone,’ if you will,” she explains, likening the concept to “how active the system is in the brain.” Significantly, the serotonin changes predicted how lethal the future suicidal behavior would be.
She notes, though, that just because someone has a genetic predisposition to suicide doesn’t mean it will ever manifest itself. Some individuals with histories of suicidal behaviors in their families appear to be resilient to it. Oquendo also points out that treatments for conditions like depression or personality disorders can decrease suicide risk, even in individuals classified as high-risk. Therapeutic interventions matter.
Oquendo’s research career is a trailblazing one, according to J. John Mann, MD, a professor of translational neuroscience in Psychiatry and Radiology at Columbia, and her mentor there. He says she is the kind of scientist who stays true to the data no matter how unpopular the findings might be. He recounts how in 2011 she published a study in the American Journal of Psychiatry which challenged the current thinking about lithium having certain anti-suicidal effects. “Instead of massaging the data — even though it flew in the face of all of the previous extremely promising but not as well-designed studies, and a lot of big names had lined up their opinions and reputations behind this idea — she went ahead and published.” (How did the field react? “Stony silence,” Mann says.)
Mann finds Oquendo’s research accomplishments all the more remarkable because her path was not the traditional one. She had spent much of her career as a clinician before deciding to pursue research with his group. Mann says he had told her bluntly that her odds of success were low because she lacked sufficient background in statistics, brain biology, and imaging. “But I think that just made her more determined,” he says. She tenaciously got herself up to speed, started running studies, and eventually began getting NIH grants, he says. “I don’t know anybody [else] who had done that. She is amazing and inspiring.”
Defining Suicidal Behavior — Down to the Details
Oquendo calls the early 2000s “a really interesting time in suicide research” because of one particular high-profile controversy: Concerns arose among parents that prescribing antidepressants to children and teenagers might increase suicidal behavior. She notes, however, that there actually were no suicide deaths in any of the relevant studies. “Zero,” she says. “But there was a lot of consternation; a lot of families were worried.” But what exactly constituted suicidal behavior?
The FDA didn’t have clear definitions. The agency commissioned Oquendo, then a researcher at Columbia University Medical Center, and colleagues Madelyn Gould, PhD, MPH, Barbara Stanley, PhD, and Kelly Posner, PhD, to investigate. The team created standards for defining suicidal behavior. Soon thereafter, the 2004 requirement for black box warnings — the highest level of FDA alert — was placed on all antidepressant medication labeling. The system was also endorsed by the CDC, and is now used worldwide. Oquendo and her colleagues even made it into the popular press, recognized as “Influentials” in the health arena by New York magazine.
In that classification system, a key refinement and extension of older such systems, the team identified sub-categories of suicidal behavior that had never been well described. One was “interrupted suicide attempt”: For example, a person enters the room and knocks a gun out of the suicidal person’s hand, saving their life. Another was “aborted suicide attempt,” in which someone might pick up a deadly implement but then change their mind about using it. And “preparatory acts” refers to someone perhaps purchasing a deadly substance and writing a suicide note but going no further.
These subtleties are important to identify, says Oquendo, because they can be used to predict a person’s future level of risk for taking their life. Columbia’s John Mann agrees, and adds that, because people who engage in suicidal behavior are being found to have different patterns of suicidal ideation, different biology, and varying responses to stress, the one-treatment-fits-all approach seems increasingly inadequate. “One may need to think about different risk groups and have strategy designed more specifically for them,” he says.
Oquendo points out that psychiatrists and other therapists haven’t traditionally asked their patients for a lot of details around suicidal behavior: “Clinicians often thought about suicidal behavior as a binary variable: yes or no, did they attempt to kill themselves or not.” But she says the better we can describe the activities a patient has engaged in, the number of times they did them, and so forth, the better we can determine their degree of risk.
The Oquendo-Gould-Stanley-Posner classification system is not only useful for psychiatrists. The team tested a group of international experts and a group of pediatricians to see how they evaluated a set of case records. Once trained in the classifications, says Oquendo, the pediatricians were just as good as the international experts in distinguishing actual suicide attempts from non-attempts. As a result, a variety of providers can be involved in prevention efforts.
Oquendo says she’s excited about a current research project to identify two new subtypes of suicidal behavior with different biological underpinnings. The subtypes are “planful” behavior in which the person methodically sketches out exactly what they’re going to do, versus a person who appears to take their life on an impulse. The studies involve both brain scans and measurements of stress responsivity. Study participants are exposed to different stressors and their cortisol levels are measured. Oquendo’s team has begun analyzing data; they plan to publish findings in the coming months. So they have mapped the suicide and analyzed their data… the next STEP is CONTROL. Being able to cause suicide.
Cultural (In)Sensitivity
Global Mental Health: Doing More with Less
Imagine you lived in a country that only had 13 psychiatrists, total, to treat every mental condition. That’s the situation of Mozambique, a nation of 28 million people. And many other countries are in similar straits.
An expert in global mental health in addition to her U.S. research and administrative activities at Penn, Oquendo and her former Columbia colleague, psychiatrist Milton Wainberg, are trying to figure out the most efficient, cost-effective ways to serve people’s mental health needs when resources are stretched impossibly thin. This type of research is known as implementation science. Wainberg points out that in addition to helping people in sub-Saharan Africa, findings from the project could eventually be applied to other low- and middle-income countries and regions, including in the U.S.
The team is working with a new type of provider known as a psychiatric technician, and is also training community health workers, with an eye toward ensuring the implementation techniques are sustainable among the local populations.
The effort in Mozambique began in 2014, and last year the team received funding not only to continue the work in that country but to begin capacity-building in Botswana, Malawi, South Africa, and Zambia. Collaborating with local health ministries, the researchers are testing the best strategies to implement comprehensive mental health — encompassing all psychiatric disorders, substance abuse, and epilepsy—and to provide care that includes both psychotherapies and medication.
“Even in [the U.S.] we don’t have enough psychiatrists — you’re never going to have enough psychiatrists,” Oquendo says. “So how can we develop a system of care so that people can be attended to given the paucity of human resources?” The joint Penn-Columbia effort may yield practical solutions that could help millions of people.

While suicide is often viewed as the most extreme outcome of severe depression, it’s important to understand that this isn’t always the case, Oquendo says. She points out that suicide is seen in a variety of psychiatric conditions: Ten percent of people with alcoholism kill themselves, and 10 percent of people with schizophrenia. Eating disorders and anxiety disorders “also seem to predispose,” she says.
In fact, Oquendo believes suicide should be classified as “its own thing” as opposed to a symptom of other mental illnesses. She was the first to propose that suicide be given its own diagnostic category, stating it would help psychiatrists more effectively track high-risk patients. She succeeded in getting it added to the DSM-5 in 2013, but only to the appendix: “What that tells you is there’s a little bit of resistance to this concept.”
She thinks the resistance may stem from a Western-centric view prevalent in the field. In Western culture, she says, one almost never sees suicide as a stand-alone phenomenon, separate from another psychiatric illness. But in India, China, and other cultures, many people who die by suicide are reported not to have an additional psychiatric condition. While acknowledging that differences in reporting may be a factor, she asserts that the way Western medicine classifies disease “doesn’t necessarily have sensitivity to other cultural expressions of things.”
Teams Selected to Develop New Mental Health Screening Tool for Early Detection of Suicidality
Work underway to more accurately identify military members at risk of suicide
DARPA has selected two industry-led and two university-led teams for the Neural Evidence Aggregation Tool (NEAT) program. NEAT seeks to provide clinicians with new information to save warfighters’ lives. Rather than rely solely on subjective self-report questionnaires for screening, NEAT will attempt to provide mental health professionals with objective biomarkers of suicidality. These biomarkers consist of extremely fast automatic brain and body responses reflecting pre-attentional processing rather than consciously filtered subjective responses to questions. The ultimate program goal is to reverse the tragic trend of suicide among military members and veterans by giving clinicians a more reliable screening tool for early detection of suicidality.
DARPA has selected the following lead institutions and research partners as NEAT performers:
- Charles River Analytics partnered with Tufts University, the Georgia Institute of Technology, and Emory University
- Draper partnered with Harvard Medical School affiliates the McLean and Massachusetts General Hospitals, the Georgia Institute of Technology, Northeastern University, and the University of Pennsylvania
- University of Minnesota partnered with Deliberate.ai, Intheon, University of Washington, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute
- University of Southern California (USC) partnered with University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)
In addition to these performers, DARPA selected Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory as the independent validation and verification (IV&V) team for technical input and analysis. DARPA also selected RAND to inform the research by convening a group of stakeholders to provide an independent analysis of the ethical, legal, and societal implications (ELSI) for DARPA and the performers.
“Typically, physicians use a patient’s initial subjective descriptions of symptoms to then choose from a vast array of imaging, laboratory tests, and other objective measures to assist in making a diagnosis,” said Dr. Greg Witkop, a former Army surgeon and NEAT program manager. “Mental health professionals, however, must do the best they can for screening and assessment with limited tools beyond subjective self-report. The field of nanotechnology has long been promoted by descriptions of nanorobots and nanomachines that can perform actions at the molecular level, mimicking the actions of cells. Long a darling subject of science fiction authors, nanomachines could conceivably be used in medicine for everything from drug delivery to detecting and destroying clusters of cancer cells. Earlier this year, Chinese researchers announced the development of cell-size robots that could be used in targeted drug delivery. (NOTE THE DATE ON THIS ARTICLE! 2013)
Now, the road to to truly useful nanoscale technology may have gotten one step shorter with the discovery of another potentially useful property of graphene. Georgia Institute of Technology researchers have conducted computer modeling and simulations that show that the material may make a good antenna at the scale needed to link nanomachines to the outside world.

While a working nanoantenna has yet to be made or demonstrated, “we are exploiting the peculiar propagation of electrons in graphene to make a very small antenna that can radiate at much lower frequencies than classical metallic antennas of the same size,” Ian Akyildiz, School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, said in a Georgia Tech release. “We believe that this is just the beginning of a new networking and communications paradigm based on the use of graphene.“
Josep Jornet, who worked with Akyildiz on the project and is now assistant professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo, said, “With this antenna, we can cut the frequency by two orders of magnitude and cut the power needs by four orders of magnitude.” The nanomachines they envision would include energy-harvesting nanogenerators, and nanoscale sensing, processing and memory components. The nanoscale antenna and transceiver work being done at Georgia Tech would allow the devices to communicate the information they sense and process to the outside world.
Graphene is a one-atom-thick honeycomb lattice of carbon atoms. It is one single molecule, one atom thick, no matter how large it is made, and its unique properties ensure its future usefulness in medtech.
Another team of researchers, at the Baylor College of Medicine (Houston TX) in a paper published on NIH.gov has shown graphene to have possibilities as a direct neuronal interface. But biocompatibility may be an issue. Pinto et al. have published a review of recent work on this topic. Still, another duck is in the row.
