Sarasota, about an hour south of Tampa, is a beautiful city on the southwestern shores of Florida’s Gulf of Mexico. It’s home to Siesta Key, a pristine, powdery, white-quartz crystal beach voted number one of the “Top-10 Best Beaches of the World.” Visitors or spiritual seekers know from the moment they arrive in Sarasota that it’s a different place. Many who came to visit went home, sold their homes, quit their jobs and returned here to live.Besides the beaches, the old Spanish architecture, the Ringling Art Museum, the universities, the five-star restaurants and shops, St. Armand’s Circle, and the art community calls to visitors. Alas, those attractions and “Best of” notices swelled the population and increased vertical residential density that changed the skyline of the city. The increases caused severe infrastructure, housing, and environmental impacts on the once quiet town. Known as a spiritual destination, there were many Yoga studios, spiritual centers, and meditation groups in the area. Unfortunately COVID took a toll and many of these centers and groups disbanded or closed permanently. And yet, there’s a Spiritual History in Sarasota that should be remembered. It’s told in the following segments.

In early December 2007 Jo Mooy had a series of dreams that gave rise to the Prism of LIght in Sarasota Florida. In the dream, Sarasota was identified “as one of 22 future Cities of Light.” In subsequent dreams that month, I was shown a “map” which I recognized as SW Florida. Points were highlighted on the map. Each time a point was identified I circled the area on the map. I was told to “connect the points” and realized a “diamond crystal with facets” was emerging. A voice in the dream said, “This is not a crystal. It is a Prism. A crystal absorbs light. A Prism reflects it.” The dreams continued to evolve nightly and in daily meditation more was revealed. I drew the connecting dots creating the Prism Diagram over a map of SW Florida (see below) then waited to determine what to do with it. One day in meditation the message was clear – “Gather 9 people to anchor the 9 points of the Prism at 12:00 noon on the Summer Solstice, June 20, 2008.” Jo identified 9 anchors in the community who led spiritual groups or who were leaders of spiritual centers. ( November 4, 2008, Obama was elected President) Each responded immediately as though they too intuitively knew this was a momentous event. Each said they too had feelings that “Sarasota was a City of Light.” On June 20, 2008 between 12 noon and 12:24 pm (date and time directed by the dreams) gatherings were held across 65 square miles stretching from Anna Maria Island in the North to Warm Mineral Springs in the South and Myakka State Park in the East to the Vortex between South Lido Beach and Siesta Key Beach. Over 350 people joined across this expanse to set an ethereal Prism of Light over Sarasota. The Center of the Prism was a portal anchored by David Less and his group at Rising Tide Spiritual Center.The work with the Prism continued through the Fall Equinox 2008 when Peace Poles were purchased by community donations, marking the points on the Prism of Light and the Spiritual Centers participating. Those Peace Poles were re-dedicated in 2014. (see below) The photo above is the Crystal of Peace Mandala that was created to identify the Prism, the participants, and the work done on the Prism of Light. Each color was meticulously painted in a sacred ritual by one of the Anchors. Then the Mandala was opened to the community participants who placed their prayers for Peace in the Mandala. It was blessed and imbued with spiritual markings by Singhe, a Tibetan Monk who served as Mandala maker for His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The Crystal of Peace Mandala is now available to be shown at public or spiritual events or ceremonies.More detailed information on the Prism of Light can be obtained by contacting Jo Mooy who along with Patricia Cockerill, were the Visionaries behind the Prism of Light.
From a numerology point of view, the beach, the city and the state all resonate at a high Master Vibrational frequency. The Master Vibration numbers have the potential for influence on the world stage. Florida is a Master Number 11 reflecting “brotherly love on a grand scale.” Sarasota is a Master Number 22 reflecting the “ability to manifest easily as the master builder, ambassador and diplomat.” Siesta Key is a Master Number 33, reflecting the “spiritual teacher of higher consciousness, connecting with the Oversoul.”

Many saw the city as a future ‘crystal city of light’ that was waiting to be birthed. Two residents wrote poems dated 1993 and 2007 in which they described a “future city of light on the bay.” Their words and visualizations were complimented in books like The Keys of Enoch, Secrets of Amenti, and Calling Humanity which described Sarasota as a “sacred city of the new earth” or a “portal or stargate” city.

PRISM OF LIGHT VISION
THE MAP
The Vision presented itself as an ethereal diamond-shaped Prism of Light over a map of southwestern Florida. The Prism outline stretched 65 miles from Holmes Beach in the North to Warm Mineral Springs in the South and 22 miles from Siesta Key Beach in the West to Myakka State Park in the East. The internal lines of the Prism aligned with different spiritual centers and temples which existed along a north-south axis. Each of the four points in the diamond (North, South, East and West) were determined to be locations of sacred sites that were important to the native people who lived on the land centuries ago. Within hours of releasing the map of the Prism of Light, those who heard about it in the spiritual community stepped forward to anchor or be part of the Prism. In an effortless process, friends, light-workers, and spiritual leaders declared themselves ready to participate in shaping this sacred Vision on the Summer Solstice, 2008.
Across the miles, 222 people gathered at the four points of the diamond and all along the facets of the Prism at noon on June 20, 2008. Men, women and children gathered on beaches, in forests, in gardens and at seven spiritual centers. They held the consciousness that each of us was a Prism within the greater Prism. With bells, rattles, drums, and chants, they proclaimed that each person present was a reflection of the light and love of the work each was called to do. They professed their intentions to seed the future City of Light in Sarasota where healing, teaching, alternative medicine, art, music, and writing would be guided and infused by spirit.

Later that evening, under a Full Moon at Unity of Sarasota’s Labyrinth, 350 men, women and children, gathered to unite in sacred ceremony. The multigenerational group in Sarasota united in fellowship with a group known as the Abrahamic Reunion holding a similar gathering that night in Jerusalem. The collective intention of the two groups was that a portal would be opened and anchored over the troubled city of Old Jerusalem while seeding a New Jerusalem. The New Jerusalem, one of the 22 Future Cities of Light, would be filled with hope, love, peace, and acceptance for all peoples. In sacred ceremonies at the Labyrinth, an Incan Despacho (thanksgiving prayer bundle) was offered to Mother Earth. In meditation, the group sounded rounds of OM which opened the Stargate of the Prism of Light, calling forth the 1000 years of peace, harmony and unity on earth promised by all the sacred teachings. And so it was!
To commemorate the event – Peace Poles were installed at several points on the Prism of Light. The locations are: Rising Tide International, Unity of Sarasota, Sarasota Center of Light, Radiance of Sarasota and Warm Mineral Springs. The spiritual community of Sarasota, along with the next two generations of children, seeded the Crystal City of Light on the Summer Solstice of 2008. As we reflected on what we did, little did we know that just over a week later the Prism of Light would be validated by a Crop Circle which appeared in the wheat fields of Wiltshire, UK on June 30th. The circle mimicked the map design of the Prism of Light. The Crop Circle was a diamond-shaped Prism with facets and there in the center was the circular portal opening.

Steve wrote in an email to Jo “No staggering news on this. Most people feel it is like a diamond … perhaps you all instigated the appearance of this formation.”
A SHIFT IN CONSCIOUSNESS
David Less, the spiritual director of Rising Tide Spiritual Center anchored the circle in the center of the Prism of Light. He remarked that “The building of the third Temple” referred to in Judeo-Christian scriptures is the most important. It is not physical. It is not real estate. It is not owned by governments. The Third temple will be built by each one of us through the consciousness of love. We will put in whatever we can and the energy will coalesce from the human heart. There will be a profound change for we are at the point of a great shift in consciousness. We are beings who have great power. We are the ones who will love, regardless of what we see. We do good because we can. This is our potential and this is the us we are becoming.”
As a founding member of the Abrahamic Reunion in Jerusalem, he orchestrated the Jerusalem gathering to coincide with the Prism of Light conducted in Sarasota the same night. The Abrahamic Reunion is a team of spiritual and religious leaders, men and women, Druze, Christian, Jews, Muslims, Palestinians, Bedouins, dedicated to building peace in the Holy Land and raising human consciousness.
Climatologists have said that the southwestern portion of Florida, stretching from Tampa Bay to the Everglades is in a protected field called, ‘the forbidden zone.’ Meteorologists and scientists say the shape of the coastline of this area of Florida, the ocean bottom configuration, and the prevailing winds tend to create up-welling currents that take water away from the coastline.Some scientists have also said the Tampa Bay area is in a “bubble of protection.” Based on a scientific study of 194 probes planted in the Gulf, the scientific reports indicate that this area was at “minimal risk of receiving surface oil.” from the 2010 BP oil spill. Spiritual leaders in the community KNOW the area is in a “bubble of protection.” When Hurricane Irma was on course to hit SW Florida in September 2017, the spiritual community held strong protective prayers for the area. The catastrophic storm veered east around the bubble of protection, leaving behind a heart shaped opening captured on film by weather newscasters. The Legend Of Siesta Key Sand
Among Sarasota’s holistic community, Siesta Beach has an impressive reputation… The credit goes to the qualities of the beach’s sand. The legend is that the presence offshore of quartz crystals may be derived from the ancient mythical city of Atlantis. Some healers point to a decades-old, well-canopied tree, surrounded by heavy grass growth and growing about 60 feet from the coast, as an indication of the beach’s metaphysical vitality. Others talk of a mysterious protection from hurricanes that they credit to either Indian blessings or a vortex of energy they say exists near the rumored Atlantis crystal location.
Whatever the reasons, Siesta Beach is growing in the reverence it receives among people who consider themselves “energy healers” or shamans, and its reputation for healing power stretches even to Peru.
The belief in Siesta Beach’s concentration of energy has at least some scientific roots that can be documented, and it has to do with Siesta’s sand. Whiter than the sand at any other beach in the area, Siesta’s sand is also known for its relative coolness even on the hottest of days. Those qualities are derived from the content of sand, which is indeed unique from any other beach in the world Siesta sand is 99.9 percent quartz. This makes the sand appear very white. And because of the way the crystals have been worn down, the sand is exceptionally soft. You also won’t find much particulate shell matter.
Siesta’s sand originated thousands of years ago from the Appalachian area. That fact is significant to energy healers because of their deep belief that quartz is itself a healing material, especially quartz derived from the area near Hot Springs, Ark. Quartz crystal is a natural conductor of energy, Many healers frequently choose Siesta Beach as the site for meditation events because of the energy they feel is concentrated there. Quartz is one of the highest vibratory minerals of the earth. And we are mineral-based; we’re made up of the same elements the earth is made of, so you could take somebody who knows nothing about quartz or crystals or elements, have them lie down on the quartz crystal sand of Siesta Beach on a beautiful day and the elements in their body the molecular structure in their body will resonate with the quartz in that sand. As for our yoga classes, which are held directly on the sand, it can be absolutely transformational. I believe the legends may have real validity because in my many years of teaching Yoga on some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, including the beaches of Hawaii, I have not found a beach that inspires so much healing, love and inner peace as I found here on Siesta Key beach.
Here we will examine the extraordinary properties of quartz crystal.
Quartz crystals have been revered throughout the ages as symbols of beauty, health and often power. The latter is sometimes referred to as key to the rise and fall of the mythical civilization of Atlantis. More recently quartz crystals have been associated within New Age circles and applications to holistic health, meditation and personal growth.
Let us first explore the science behind the mystique of quartz crystals. There are many types of natural quartz crystals. The most common ones are amethyst, citrine, rose, smoky and clear. Natural quartz is composed of silicon dioxide molecules. Quartz consisting solely of silicon dioxide is known as clear quartz which is the type of crystal sand at Siesta Key beach. The other members of the quartz family are variations. In addition to the fundamental silicon dioxide structure, they also have chemical impurities that were present when the crystal formed. For example amethyst has impurities of manganese oxides, which gives it the typical purple color.
A natural crystal by definition means it has a very regular arrangement of atoms, quartz crystal looks like a matrix of very beautiful lattes structures under the microscope. When electricity is put into a quartz crystal their atoms vibrate at a very stable frequency. These characteristics make quartz an excellent receptor and emitter of electromagnetic waves. This is why quartz is commonly used in radios, watches, and numerous electronic technologies. One interesting characteristic of quartz crystal can be observed when electricity is applied to it. The quartz will begin to vibrate which in turn causes the quartz to produce its own weak electric current. This is taken advantage of in the workings of a typical quartz watch. Quartz crystal also exhibit the piezoelectric effect which is understood as the linear electromechanical interaction as when pressure is applied along across a quartz crystal it will produce its own electric charge.
The humble quartz crystal is a major element in today’s technological revolution. The conversion of quartz crystals into silicon chips has transformed the world. Quartz has made the digital age possible. It has given us computers, mobile phones and communication breakthroughs. Vast pieces of information to be brought together in a precisely organized way with the silicon chips of a computer.
One of the early pioneers of silicon chip technology was Nobel prize-winning scientist Marcel Vogel. He made a discovery while working as a research scientist for IBM that shook to the core the belief systems of his scientific peers. Vogel discovered that not only can crystals be programmed as silicon chips in a computer, but they also can be programmed with thought. A person sitting at a computer inputs his thoughts through a keyboard. This is stored in the computer’s silicon chips via the medium of electricity. Vogel reasoned that like electricity, thought is a form of energy, which is given direction by our intention. He concluded that crystals could also be programmed without the need for electricity, by using just thoughts or clear intention. Vogel designed a multitude of experiments to validate his quantum theories. Like all groundbreaking alternative scientists, the mainstream scientific community ostracized him.
Armed with the concepts of quantum physics, the group at N and N Associates Inc. has recently completed work to take the science of quartz crystals to a new level and demonstrate the efficacy and validity of using quartz crystals to promote holistic health. The group has extensively researched key universal vibrational (energy) patterns. These patterns are considered to be the cornerstone of the matrix between the physical universe and the creative life force.

They don’t realize they opening up portals to other dimensions that GOD had closed for our protection. Why would they open up something about which they have very limited to NO KNOWLEDGE or understanding?
In conclusion, we could summarize that quartz crystals are truly unique. There is no question that they can learn and reproduce simple, yet powerful patterns, as demonstrated by today’s digital technology. Recent work has also proven the validity of using quartz crystals to promote holistic health. While in some circumstances it might be argued that quartz crystals are magical, the power behind quartz crystals has been amply demonstrated using sound science.
So, science is telling us that rocks can think and learn? If we had said that, Scientists would have ridiculed us no end!

Siesta Beach attracts a powerful reputation in some circles
Siesta Beach’s reputation as one of the country’s top beaches has only grown since it was first recognized in 1988 for its white-sugar sand beaches. Just this year, it placed second on a Top 10 list of worldwide beaches compiled by Stephen P. Leatherman, aka Dr. Beach, a Florida International University professor.
Lourdes Ramirez, owner of the Isle of Avalon spa and former Siesta Key community activist, echoes Delgado’s feelings about the beach. “There are certain parts of our planet that have these healing energies. We feel that Siesta Key has that,” says Ramirez, who has studied alternative spirituality informally for about six years. “I think the general public won’t believe it and might be skeptical. But we know there is a correlation between how you feel on Siesta Beach, and the vortex and the sand.”
The healthy canopy-laden tree that seems to mysteriously grow where it shouldn’t is actually an invasive Australian pine, McCarthy says. “Part of the problem with Australian pines is they can thrive in that environment,” McCarthy says. “Australian pines create a sort of a windbreak, which slows the sand down, which allows other seeds to grow, which allows grass to come around.”
The notion that Indian blessings help protect Siesta from hurricanes appears to stem from “Texas” Jim Mitchell, says Nancy Connelly, a fourth-generation resident of Siesta Key. Mitchell, who ran a reptile farm in Sarasota from the mid-1930s to the mid-1960s, had befriended Indians during his youth, and many of his Indian friends would travel to his Sarasota home when hurricanes threatened, Connelly remembers hearing as a child from her mother. “Newscasters would talk about that on TV,” Connelly recalls. “They had no idea of the Indians’ relationship with Texas Jim.”
Barnett points to studies that document faster healing among hospital patients who can view nature through windows in their hospital rooms. “As a doctor, I’m not going to tell people to go and sit on the sand to heal themselves,” Barnett says. “But there is a lot of history with crystals and healing, and my personal feeling is that we should honor and respect tradition. People really are drawn to the beach with the belief in the healing power of crystals.”

THE GOLDEN ETHERIC CITIES OF THE NEW EARTH

Edgar Cayce (1877-1945), along with various psychics, prophets, channels and seers, foretold (and still foretell) of potential EARTH CHANGES that are directly related to the coming of a NEW AGE upon Mother Earth. A researcher of the information forecasted by these many sources will quickly find various scenarios and happenings spanning varying degrees of land mass alterations, changes and/or catastrophes, much of which is contradictory between sources.
The existence of such contradictions does not mean the information is false, nor does focusing on any one source mean it is true. The discrepancies exist for many reasons. The primary reason is we are a mass consciousness of humanity that has freedom of will. Little changes within our conscious energy field can have massive positive results, or alternatively, if we collectively are failing to make much change within ourselves, we are passively acknowledging that we are in acceptance of whatever needs to occur on the physical plane to force us to change.
Cayce himself had said we always have the power to avoid earth catastrophes of any level. In those days he referred to it as the power of prayer, of tapping into that connection to God. In our work, we refer to it as our core essence as Divine Eternal Beings who ARE ONE with the GOD FORCE through the Journey of the Soul into Full Remembrance, which is the deepest form of prayer one can accomplish.
The NEW EARTH is indeed going to have GOLDEN ETHERIC CITIES OF LIGHT. These cities have been referred to 2000 years ago in Biblical terms as “the Land of Milk and Honey”, which was a reference to vast abundance of two items that were considered delicacies in those times.
Why do all these folks who hate God and the Bible always reference SCRIPTURE/THE WORD OF GOD?? How dare they take a direct promise from The Creator to His children and use it to promote their deceit?? Milk and Honey were not delicacies, they were part of the building blocks of health. They were readily and freely available.
In our modern days of 1989, the I AM AMERICA organization foresaw 5 of these cities within North America. Well known channel Ronna Herman who works with Archangel Michael’s messages said in 2010 that “You [humanity] have opened the pathways to the Cities of Light so that you can gradually incorporate higher and more refined frequencies of Light.”
Messages channeled from interdimensional beings through New Agers who are in an altered state of consciouness should NEVER be considered TRUSTWORTHY or VALID.
Another popular channel Michael Quinsey has said: “The Cities of Light of which you are now becoming aware, will give you a sample of what it is like in the higher dimensions. Yet they are more in the nature of Healing Centres specifically prepared to help you raise your consciousness levels. You will take the fast track to remove all the vestiges of your present dimension that have kept you within it.” (Sept. 2, 2011.) A year later he had this to add: “There will be ample facilities, including the Cities of Light, where you can be healed as you are to be fully restored to a prime condition. Eventually you will also be able to reverse the aging process and return to a youthful appearance, and so it will go on until you become a Galactic Being. All of these changes await you and they are not too far in the future. Think positively about them and you will be helping to manifest them much sooner than we have allowed for.” (Sept. 19, 2012).

As Quinsey noted, these Golden Etheric Cities are “healing centers for your consciousness”. Basically what the information is telling us is an emphasis on “consciousness”. Many people simply hear such words and take away the “healing” part and do not consider what the “consciousness” part means, instead feeling it will be something like a free healing clinic. This is not correct.
Louise L. Hay has written and spoken for many years on the topic of dis-ease in the body being directly related to our state of being stating, “I wish the children could be taught early on that our thinking creates our experience.” This is the higher dimensional pathway for healing, and is what Quinsey meant. The Etheric Golden Cities will be centers for learning how to heal all parts of ourselves, not just the physical.
We accomplish this by doing the inner work of self-awareness in our ‘consciousness’ to remove elements within us that have, over eons of time, kept our existence in states of dis-ease or dis-harmony. In short, it is purely about doing inner work just as all the great spiritual Masters have been telling us for those same eons of time.
What form does that INNER WORK take to create this healing? In our Academy teachings, we have spent the last four years tapping directly into exactly what the NEW AGE of the NEW EARTH is all about so that you don’t need to sort through the varied sources out there and patch together an understanding. We have done that for you. We actually visit these cities in our conscious awareness so that we can receive the healing we need. As AA Michael, in speaking about the New Earth, has stated through channel Linda Dillon, “That is a very concrete reality and there are many of you out there who are very conscientiously building and working daily with the Cities of Light. Do not think this is simply a pipe dream, it is not and you are seeing the fruits of this.” (Sept. 8, 2012).
Because of the importance of this work, we are releasing a pre-release set of audio teachings from our conscious meditative journey visits to the GOLDEN ETHERIC NEW EARTH CITIES. What occurs in these teachings is rather profound. We are given a vision of what the CITIES look like currently (as they are also in a process of being built and expanded). We then hear from a Being that has a major stake in having the upper earth citizens raise their consciousness (Lord Adama of Telos, capitol city High Priest of the Inner Earth Agartha Network of Cities), so that the Inner Earth citizens can once again walk on the upper earth with their brother and sisters of GAIA.
Do you understand that?? They are talking about bringing the Giants/ the Nephilim out from within the Earth where GOD has/had them bound!! Separated from us for our Protection!!
Next the Spiritual Masters and Light Beings, such as AA Michael, instruct us regarding how we can learn to assist ourselves within these cities. Finally, in each teaching journey throughout the transmission, we always receive the higher frequencies that have our Light Bodies learn to shift and accept higher dimensional energies within our full body system (of the physical, emotional, mental and etheric bodies) so that it is not just about an informational teaching.
Now they are talking about the FALLEN ANGELS connecting with us and shifting our bodies in their dimensional energies. Ya, by putting us in the WEB/MATRIX.
Originally the information received by the I AM AMERICA* organization related five (5) cities, their approximate etheric location above the surface of the earth, and the qualities that city would assist us in achieving. They stated the Five Golden City Vortices of The United States are: 1.) Gobean: Arizona and New Mexico; Qualities: Transformation, Harmony, and Peace. 2.) Malton: Illinois and Indiana; Qualities: Fruition (fructification), Attainment 3.) Wahanee: Georgia and South Carolina; Qualities: Justice, Liberty, and Freedom 4.) Shalahah: Montana and Idaho; Qualities: Abundance, Prosperity, Healing. And 5.) Klehma: Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska; Qualities: Continuity, Balance, and Harmony.
We now know that there are 22 GOLDEN ETHERIC CITIES that have many more qualities than first understood. These Cities of Light in fact each relate specifically to the 22 RAYS OF GOD, as each city is organized to bring forth the entirety of healing from a specific Ray (or Flame). Light, as we know, is a vibrational frequency, and each of the 22 Rays is given from the God Force to assist us in balancing and elevating our full consciousness in specific areas of our existence, in short: raising our frequency. REMEMBER that when they refer to God, they are not talking about the Creator of the Universe.

We have also learned that the names of the Cities are also more complex than first thought. For example Gobean, the earthly term for the first city, is known spiritually as Goloneiah. It is the City of the Blue Ray and is not just overlighted by AA Michael, but his counterpart, AA Faith; as well as the Elohim Masters Hercules and Amazonia. Most importantly one of the main teachers of this city is Ascended Master El Morya, the current Ray Chohan of the Blue Flame. His role is to assist us to fully understand the WILL TO DO which is the main quality of the Blue Ray that is required in order to bring about changes within us.

This two part seminar occuring over one day will cover the nuts and bolts of contacting interdimensional beings. What exactly does an interdimensional being mean? How does one differentiate among ascended masters, angelic beings, extraterrestrial beings, devas, nature spirits, etc? The intent for the experiential portion at Siesta Beach will not only be to experience these contact events but also to create a supervortex to bring in healing energies for the area.
Creation of a Supervortex: it is widely held that Siesta Key Beach is the coastal tip of a crystalline vortex extending many miles out into the Gulf of Mexico. The remarkably fine white powder sand of Siesta Beach is actually composed of billions of tiny quartz crystal molecules which holds an energy that attracts many souls to Sarasota for healing and transformation. It has also been found that crystals are (a) energy condensers, (b) energy projectors, (c) energy transformers, and (d) programmable.
We are going to program the entire beach to function as an intention-charged supervortex to provide greater healing for the planet and for all who venture into the area. Ancient Tibetan healing sites began in this way when a naturally occurring power spot in the Himalayas was blessed and vibrationally enriched by the prayers and chanting of spiritual masters. Our hope is to inaugurate a Shangri-La in Sarasota.
As we will discuss during that afternoon, contact does not only include a direct sighting of some type of ET craft or light craft but also internal experiences such as telepathic thought transference, sounds, electrical phenomenon, sleepiness, giddiness, and elation. Also, one’s energy body can be changed during such contact experiences to allow further openings (gateways/portala) in consciousness. Furthermore, there is a misconception perpetuated by the popular media that ET craft will be some type of metal nuts and bolts type of spaceship. SARASOTA, Fla. — On a recent Sunday, Phyllis Town, 66, and more than 40 congregants rotated in and out of Sunday service at the Sarasota Center of Light, founded 68 years ago as a nondenominational church that wed Christianity and metaphysical spirituality, and where all ministers are mediums, to receive their own individual “vibrational healings.” With Ms. Town seated, Rev. Jim Toole, 60, took a breath, closed his eyes and positioned his hands just above the top of her head. For about 10 minutes, Reverend Toole moved his hands around Ms. Town’s upper torso and head mere inches from her face, careful not to touch her. As she sat silently, carefully breathing, he explained that he was channeling energy. When Reverend Toole was finished, he softly whispered in Ms. Town’s ear as a grin stretched across her face.
“I come here because it’s the only time I get touched,” a woman told Ms. Town during one session.
The sentiment of missing someone’s touch resonated with Ms. Town, whose husband “transitioned,” because “it never occurred to me that I was going through that as a widow.” Nearly six years ago, in the wake of his death, she devoted herself to the Center entirely.

Reverend Toole and Ms. Town are part of a dense spiritual constellation concentrated among two neighboring cities, Sarasota and Bradenton in Florida, that also encompasses the Spirit University, a litany of roadside psychics and more than 100 mediums and spiritual guides. Unlike other American spiritual outcrops like Lily Dale, N.Y., and Cassadaga, Fla., Sarasota wasn’t founded as a spiritual community. And its wealth of spiritualists isn’t billed as an attraction.
As Americans search for means to cope with loss, and even though interest has grown immensely in the past century, the stigma of fortunetelling fraud, psychic scams and skepticism still haunts the practice.
“I thought I was a witch,” said Ms. Town, who is an associate minister at the Sarasota Center of Light. “Spirits would come to me — dead relatives and things like that.” It took the community in Sarasota to bring her out of her shell. And like any community, Town’s story demonstrates the value of a room full of people on any given day, the kinship, the warmth, the sense of being less alone in the world.
Nationally, Americans increasingly consider themselves “spiritual but not religious,” according to a Pew Research Center survey, a metric that spiked to 27 percent from 19 percent in the last five years. While American spiritualism is often depicted as rooted in Native American, Caribbean, Latin American or African cultures, spiritualists today span a vast racial spectrum, and Southwest Florida represents a mere sliver of the broader spiritual diaspora.
Among the earliest evidence of a metaphysical adviser in Sarasota was on January 18, 1912, in the Sarasota Times, when advertisements for a tropical tree nursery and farm seed flanked the first mention of a “Clairvoyant Palmist” by the name of Princess Gladys. The ad appeared once a week for a month then vanished. That same year, John and Mable Ringling of the Ringling Circus bought their home along Sarasota Bay and in 1927 would move the Circus’ headquarters to Sarasota. A slew of fortunetellers and palm readers followed.
In the 1930s, the word “psychic” was mentioned in Sarasota newspapers 116 times. By the 1970s, it appeared 1,555 times over that decade.
Catherine Rosenbaum followed her parents south when they retired from Philadelphia to Longboat Key in Sarasota. After a divorce in 2008, she turned to the stars, culling numerology, astrology and intuition to make a living as a reader, or as she would say, “a reflector.”
“The angels filled my books,” she said.
At 13, Ms. Rosenbaum would trace the constellations with her finger outside her home in Philadelphia. She took so strongly to the night sky that at 14, her mother would take her for weekly lessons with an astrologer after school. Ms. Rosenbaum, 64, has been a full-time medium for 10 years, but noted, “I was born like that.” She added: “I always felt what everybody else was feeling, but I never had a sense of myself.”
Now she does readings seven times a month at a shop called Elysian Fields in central Sarasota. While she often meets with private clients in person, much of her time is devoted to phone readings with people as far away as Taiwan.
As for the process, “it’s not something I can explain,” Ms. Rosenbaum said. She starts with someone’s name and birth date and uses numerology, astrology and symbol-based systems; then she enters her clients’ auric field (a descriptor for the layers of energy that surrounds the body and correspond to chakras as stated), allowing their energy to envelop her. “Everything has information in it,” she explained, noting the presence of their fears, traumas and desires. “There’s no hiding.”
“I’m more evolved,” said Ondrej Zouhar, 37, a client. In 2017, he moved to Sarasota and began to see Ms. Rosenbaum regularly. He said he felt pressure to find fame and be perceived as wealthy, but with Ms. Rosenbaum as a guide, he felt like he could finally trust himself, and the external pressure fell away.
Ultimately, it comes down to listening — a prosaic pursuit with profound outcomes: “It’s a beautiful thing to watch people become themselves.”
Victoria Ackerman, 57, the founder of Spirit University, echoed Ms. Rosenbaum’s sentiment of becoming oneself. After abruptly coming off the drug Cymbalta, prescribed for the pain and depression associated with fibromyalgia, she found herself in an emergency room. “All of a sudden, everything stopped,” she remembers.
In what she calls her “near-death experience,” Ms. Ackerman made a promise to herself to recalibrate her life’s compass.
It began with a book, “Dream Healer” by Adam McLeod, a self-published memoir about a proposed connection between hard science and forms of healing that aren’t taken seriously by the western medical community.
After devouring it and others, she began practicing Reiki. With clients, she said, visions would come to her as if she were sitting in front of a movie screen. At first, she shrugged them off but as the visions returned, she began to poke around online about psychic development.
In 2011, Ms. Ackerman began holding classes in a vacant storefront in the Gulf Gate neighborhood — the soft opening of the Spirit University. Devoted to the teaching of mediumship, the school offers classes including Tarot and telepathy. According to Ms. Ackerman, more than 10,000 students have enrolled in classes according to records she keeps since the Spirit University was founded.
“I felt safe in that environment,” said Elodie Tarantino, 45, a practicing medium. She said the university provided a space where no one was ridiculed or felt abnormal.
Ms. Ackerman often encounters skeptics who suggest that mediums are nothing but roadside frauds. She said that the program’s key is its focus on providing evidence, details and validation — specific information like names of those who have died or details from their past — in order to gain a client’s trust. The sweet spot is for a medium to offer six pieces of evidence for a reading of three to six minutes, and 30 pieces for an hourlong private reading. “That’s my litmus test to whether I’m myself connected, and for the client to know that you’re truly connected.”
Ms. Tarantino said of Ms. Ackerman’s ability: “She shows me she is connected.” She added that when it comes to communicating with those outside the physical world, “that connection needs to be proved.”
For her, sustained engagement with questions of love, death, mortality and identity imbue her life with meaning. “It teaches me to be much more understanding and empathetic to others, as well as myself.”
Ms. Ackerman notes that clients lean toward bigger questions like how to find peace or love. “How can I best improve my life?” is the main question. While manycome for personal or professional validation,the vast majority come for closure.
Ms. Ackerman said she believes that most people cannot see energy or spirits because modern culture is saturated with scientific pragmatism. But for those willing to consider what lies beyond the physical perception of the world, “it’s there,” she says.

Seven Sarasota Labyrinths for Meditating, Meandering and More

When Lucy Tobias first stepped foot into Saint Boniface Episcopal Church in 2016, she also discovered her first labyrinth, a spiral-shaped maze rooted in Greek mythology. Comprised of multiple paths all leading to the same center, labyrinths are often sacred spaces nestled into places of (pagan) worship, but can also be found in retreat centers, hospitals, colleges and private gardens all over the world. “They’re incredibly peaceful,” Tobias says. “When you first walk in, you realize that there is a beauty to this ancient structure.” To some labyrinth lovers, these spiral paths are a walking meditation that can lead to spiritual transformation; to others, they’re just restful, fun places to meander. Tobias went on a labyrinth quest across the state and catalogued these spiral spaces in her book, Circle the Center: Labyrinths in Florida. “I discovered a whole new sacred experience in the Sunshine State—mindful walking on meandering yet purposeful paths all the way from the Panhandle to South Florida,” she wrote.
