WOW, things are really moving fast!! WE will soon see the ANTI-CHRIST fully revealed. Everything is in place. Just as the Lord showed me…we are seeing the RISE OF THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE.
I have posted many articles on that very topic. Some of them are listed at the end of this post.
It is my prayer that those who view this article will walk away fully convinced of the Blasphemy and Heresy of the Roman Catholic Church.
Dear Friends, I love the Catholics. They are merely deceived. Many of them love the Lord with all their hearts, but they are so entrenched in the teachings of the Catholic Church they are blinded to the truth. Pray for them to be set free from anything and everything that hinders them from walking in all that God has for them.
Meanwhile, recognize the corruption and deception of the institution that is the ROMAN Catholic Church.
Understand that true believers and followers of CHRIST can have no concordance with PAGAN teachings, practices, rituals, beliefs, religions, brotherhoods or cults.
COME OUT OF HER MY PEOPLE!! BECAUSE MYSTERY BABYLON is rising for the last time. Do not be entangled with her, get out NOW!!!
You all should really listen very, very… carefully to this entire video. If you think that we are in some silly textual debate, if you think that Satan is playing games, you had better think again! Those who are standing with, and intentionally supporting the doctrinally corrupted Romish Alexandrian critical text, have no idea the pure evil that they have connected themselves to!! We are not in a text debate, we are in a Spiritual WAR!!It is all very simple, the entire Romish Alexandrian critical text is a device by the Devil, to sow division within the Body of Christ, and to cause doubt and confusion among unwary believers. Personally, I give absolutely no compromise to the pagan Catholic counterfeit church and their Satanically inspired corrupted Alexandrian critical text!…..
There the Pope gave a speech, where he stated within the Senatorial Palace “the Rome of the Caesars had transformed into the Rome of the Popes.” “and that the Roman Empire of the Caesars was alive, as it’s authority was transferred to the Pontiffs .” …Jun 29, 2024
In a speech to city officials in Rome on June 10, 2024, Pope Francis spoke about the history of ancient Rome and the need for its values to evolve:
Ancient Rome’s values
The pope noted that ancient Rome had many good values, but also needed to evolve to embrace a message of love, hope, fraternity, and liberation.
The Christian faith
The pope said that the Christian faith would transform people’s lives and institutions, and that the message of Christ offered a deeper and more radical hope than the pagan gods of Mount Olympus.
Slavery
The pope noted that even refined civilizations can have cultural elements that are so ingrained in society that they are no longer seen as contrary to human dignity.
Rome’s role in the world
The pope said that Rome has a clear vocation of universality and has been a beacon of stability and security for many peoples. He also said that Rome’s history and culture are an honor and obligation for its citizens and leaders.
Rome’s future
The pope said that Rome should continue to be a welcoming, hospitable, and generous city. He also said that the city’s upcoming Jubilee Year in 2025 has the potential to improve its decorum and make public services more efficient.
Pope Francis highlighted Rome’s vocation as a universal city, dedicated to charity and hospitality, during a speech at Rome’s City Hall. Preparing for the Holy Year 2025, he called for leaders to be close to and serve their people and for better public services to connect all areas of the city.

ROME (CNS) — Rome is unique and has a vocation as a universal city, Pope Francis said.
Rome has “a universal spirit” that aims to be at the service of charity, hospitality and welcome, he told the city’s mayor and government officials in Rome’s City Hall.
“Pilgrims, tourists, migrants, those in serious difficulty, the poorest, the lonely, the sick, the imprisoned and the excluded are the most authentic witnesses of this spirit,” which is why the pope will be opening a holy door in a prison for the Holy Year 2025, he said in his speech in the city’s Julius Caesar Hall June 10.
Authorityis only fully realized “when it serves everyone, when it uses its legitimate power to meet the needs of the citizens, particularly the weakest and the least,” he said. This applies not only to political figures, but also to priests and bishops, who must be “close to the people of God in order to serve them, to accompany them.”
Making his second official visit to Rome’s City Hall five years after his first, Pope Francis was accompanied by Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri from his vehicle to look out over the Roman Forumfrom an archway at the city government’s headquarters. (archways are portals, gateways between the physical and the spiritual realms.)
Ancient Roman culture undoubtedly exhibited a number of “good values,” the pope told city officials. But it was also seeking something more and “Mount Olympus was no longer enough,” referring to where the Greeks and Romans believed their pagan gods lived.
“A larger and deeper message of fraternity, love, hope and liberation” was found in Christ and his Gospel, he said. And the Christian faith “would in time permeate and transform the lives of people and institutions themselves.” (He makes it sound like people searching for something found a man with a better message that would eventually change things. WRONG… JESUS CHRIST IS GOD MADE FLESH. The GOD of HEAVEN sent his only begotten son to SAVE, DELIVER and REDEEM US. When we come to KNOW HIM as GOD, LORD and SAVIOR… our lives are instantly changed. We become a new creature in CHRIST!!)
Institutions and customs evolved “to a higher level, abandoning little by little, for example, … slavery,” which even educated and empathetic people had seen as natural and as a given. WHAT?? Pagans educated or uneducated, have never been empathetic! They have never cared for the people. Those who do not know GOD, are selfish and care only about what gets them what they want.
Slavery is a very significant example of how “even refined civilizations can present cultural elements that are so ingrained in the mentality of people and society as a whole that they are no longer perceived as contrary to the dignity of the human being,” the pope said.
This also happens today, he said, “when, almost unconsciously, we sometimes risk being selective and partial in the defense of human dignity, marginalizing or discarding certain categories of people, who end up finding themselves without adequate protection.” Ya, like CHRISTIANS who have become public enemy number one simply because of their beliefs. Christians are a called out people. The very nature of their FAITH separates them from the world. They are no threat to anyone. They simply are not able to come under a ONE WORLD RELIGION that embraces every manner of paganism.
The pope expressed his hope that “Rome continue to manifest its true nature, a welcoming, hospitable, generous and noble face.” What he is trying to do, is the same thing the ANCIENT ROMAN GOVERMENT did. That is to force everyone to come under the ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT and it’s ONE WORLD RELIGION.
“The enormous influx of pilgrims, tourists and migrants into the city, with all that it entails in terms of organization, could be seen as a burden, an obstacle that hinders the normal flow of things. In reality, all of this is Rome, its uniqueness in the world, its honor, its great attraction and its responsibility toward Italy, the church and the human family,” he said.
“The immense treasure of culture and history lying in the hills of Romeis the honor and obligation of its citizenry and leaders, and it expects to be properly valued and respected,” he said.
As the city prepares to host the Holy Year 2025, it will attract even more people of faith for “a prayerful and penitential pilgrimage” and tourists “who come to admire its immense treasure of works of art and the grandiose traces of past centuries,” he said.
In fact, “the upcoming Jubilee can also have a positive impact on the very face of the city, improving its decorum and making public services more efficient, not only in the center but fostering a connection between the center and the outskirts,” he said.
“That is why I like to go and visit the outlying parishes, so that they feel that their bishop is close to them,” he said.
The pope also signed the guest book quoting from the Aeneid by the Roman poet, Virgil, with “et sublato patre montem petivi” (carrying my father, I took to the hills). The verse, which the pope refers to often, describes Troy’s hero, Aeneas (first true hero of Rome, identified him with the Norse godVíðarrof the Æsir), leaving his sacked city with his father and son— representing his past and future — to eventually settle in Italy, south of Rome.
The Aeneid is a Latin epic poem written by Virgil, composed of 12 books written in hexameters, that tells the story of the founding of Rome. The poem is named after Aeneas, a Trojan hero who leads the survivors of the fall of Troy to Italy, where he becomes the ancestor of the Romans
The poem tells the story of Aeneas’s journey from Troy to Italy, the Trojans’ war against the Latins, and the foundation of Lavinium, the parent town of Rome. What it means
The poem is a national epic that honors Romeand prophesises the rise of the Roman Empire. It also glorifies traditional Roman virtues, such as loyalty to the state, devotion to family, and reverence for the gods
Vidar is the Norse god of vengeance, silence, and resilience. He is the son of Odin, the chief of the Aesir gods, and the giantess Gríðr. Prophesied to avenge the death of his father in Ragnarok.
Laviniumis a Latin word that refers to an ancient town in Latium, Italy, and the name of a legendary Roman woman:
Lavinium
The name of an ancient town in Latium, Italy, which is now known as Pratica di Mare. According to Roman tradition, Aeneas founded the town and named it after his wife, Lavinia. The town was the religious center of the early Latin peoples.
Lavinia
The name of a legendary Roman woman who was the wife of Aeneas and the daughter of King Latinus. According to Roman legend, Aeneas named the town of Lavinium after her. Lavinia’s story is featured in Virgil’s epic poem, the Aeneid. The name Lavinia is still used today, often as a way to honor the ancient civilization and its ideals.
King Latinus: A king of Latium, is described in the common tradition asa son of Faunus and the nymph Marica, as a brother of Lavinius, and the husband of Amata.
With this decision to leave Troy, the pope wrote, referring to the Roman legend, “Rome was born, born from afar, born on a journey.”

Address of the Pope to the Mayor of Rome, City Councillors and other authorities on the occasion of his visit to the Capitol JUNIO 10, 2024 16:48 JUBILEE 2025, POPE FRANCIS, ROME (ZENIT News / Rome, 06.10.2024).-
We offer the English translation of the speech delivered by the Pope in the Senate Hall of the Capitol in Rome on the occasion of his visit to the mayor. *** Lord Mayor, Assessors and Councillors of the Municipality of Rome, Distinguished Authorities,
Dear friends! I thank the Lord Mayor for the welcome invitation and the kind expressions he addressed to me; and I thank the President of the Capitoline Assembly for her words of welcome. I greet the Councillors of the Municipality, the Representatives of the Government, the other Authorities present and all the citizens of Rome.
In coming back to visit you, I feel sentiments of gratitude and joy. I come to meet you and, through you, the entire city, which almost from its birth, around 2,800 years ago, has had a clear and constant vocation of universality. For the Christian faithful, this role is not the fruit of chance, but corresponded to a providential plan.
Ancient Rome, due to its legal development and its organizational capacities, and the construction throughout the centuries of solid and lasting institutions, became a beacon to which many peoples turned for stability and security. This process allowed it to be a radiating centre of civilizationand to welcome people from all parts of the world and integrate them into its civil and social life, even to the point of having not a few of them assume the highest magistracies of the state.
This ancient Roman culture, which undoubtedly experienced many good values, on the other hand needed to elevate itself, to confront a greater message of fraternity, love, hope and liberation.
The aspiration of that civilization, which had reached its heyday, offers a further explanation for the rapid spread of the Christian message in Roman society. The shining testimony of the martyrs and the dynamism of charity of the first communities of believers intercepted the need to hear new words, words of eternal life.Olympus was no longer enough; it was necessary to go to Golgothaand to the empty tomb of the Risen Oneto find the answers to the yearning for truth, for justice, for love.
This Good News, or rather the Christian faith, over time would permeate and transform the life of people and of the institutions themselves. It would offer people a far more radical and unprecedented hope; it would offer institutions the possibility of evolving to a higher stage, gradually abandoning – for example – an institution such as slavery, which even to so many cultured minds and sensitive hearts had seemed a natural and taken for granted fact, not at all susceptible to abolition.
Slavery is a very significant example of the fact that even refined civilizations can present cultural elements so rooted in the mentality of the people and of society as a whole that they are no longer perceived as contrary to human dignity. This is also the case today, when, almost unconsciously, there is sometimes a risk of being selective, partial, in the defence of human dignity, marginalizing or discarding certain categories of people, who end up finding themselves without adequate protection.
The Rome of the Caesars was succeeded, so to speak, by the Rome of the Popes, successors of the Apostle Peter, who “preside in charity” over all the Church (lol…tell that to all the victims of the inquisition, and the crusades!!!) and who, in some centuries, also had to play a role as a substitute for the civil powers in the progressive unravelling of the ancient world, and sometimes, with unfortunate behaviour. Many things changed, but Rome’s vocation to universality was confirmed and exalted. If in fact the geographical horizon of the Roman Empire had its heart in the Mediterranean world and, although very vast, did not involve the entire Orbe, the mission of the Church has no boundaries on this earth, because it must make Christ, His action and His words of salvation known to all peoples. Since Frances does not want people to evangelize, testify or even speak the words of the bible… what exactly is this Church mission?? How do they intend to make Christ known??
Starting from the unification of Italy, a new phase began in which, after the clashes and misunderstandings with the new unitary State, in the context of what was named the “Roman question”, ninety-five years ago a conciliation between civil power and the Holy See was reached.
THE ROMAN QUESTION: During the Risorgimento, Pope Pius IX refused to accept the annexation of the Papal States to the new Kingdom of Italy. The result was a years-long stalemate, the “Roman Question.” On September 20, 1870, when Italian troops entered Rome through a breach in the city’s wall at Porta Pia, Pope Pius IX refused to accept the new status quo, declaring himself a “prisoner” of the Vatican. He would never set foot outside the palace again. Pius IX’s steadfast unwillingness to recognize the new Kingdom of Italy resulted in the so-called Roman Question, a long dispute between the papacy and the Italian state. The stalemate ended in 1929 when Benito Mussolini signed the Lateran Treaty, a bilateral agreement recognizing the pope’s sovereignty over the new state of Vatican City.
95 years ago: 11 February, 1929 – The Lateran Treaty,an agreement between the Kingdom of Italy and the Holy See, is signed in Rome. Due to The Concordat of 1929,It made Catholicism the Sole religion of Italy
The Lateran Pacts of 1929contained three sections—the Treaty of Conciliation (27 articles) which established Vatican City as an independent state, restoring the civil sovereignty of the Pope as a monarch, the Financial Convention annexed to the treaty (3 articles) which compensated the Holy See for loss of the papal states, and the Concordat (45 articles), which dealt with the Roman Catholic Church’s ecclesiastical relations with the Italian State.
spacer This year marks the fortieth anniversary of the revision of the Concordat. It reaffirmed that the Italian State and the Catholic Church are, “each in its own order, independent and sovereign and commit themselves to the full respect of this principle in their mutual relations and to reciprocal collaboration for the full promotion of man and the common good of the Country” (Article 1 of the Agreement for the Revision of the Concordat, 3 June 1985).
Rome has always confirmed itself, even in these most recent historical phases, in its universal vocation, as shown by the work of the
Second Vatican Ecumenical Council, the various Holy Years celebrated, the signing of the Treaty establishing the European Economic Community,
The European Economic Community was a regional organisation created by the Treaty of Rome of 1957, aiming to foster economic integration among its member states. It was subsequently renamed the European Community upon becoming integrated into the first pillar of the newly formed European Union in 1993. Wikipedia
Established in 2002 pursuant to the multilateral Rome Statute, the ICC is considered by its proponents to be a major step toward justice,[3] and an innovation in international law and human rights.[4] However, it has faced a number of criticisms. Some governments have refused to recognise the court’s assertion of jurisdiction, with other civil groups also accusing the court of bias, Eurocentrism and racism.[5] Others have also questioned the effectiveness of the court as a means of upholding international law.

Now Rome is about to host the Jubilee 2025.This event is of a religious nature,a prayerful and penitent pilgrimage to obtain from divine mercya more complete reconciliation with the Lord. However, it cannot but involve the city too, in terms of the care and works necessary to welcome the many pilgrims who will visit it, in addition to the tourists who come to admire its immense treasure of works of art and the grandiose traces of past centuries. Rome is unique. This is why the forthcoming Jubilee can also have a positive impact on the very face of the city, improving its decorum and making public services more efficient, not only in the centre but also by bringing the centre and the suburbs closer together. This is very important, because the city is growing and this attention, this relationship becomes more important every day. And that is why I like to go and visit the suburban parishes, so that they can feel that the bishop is close to them; because it is very easy to be close to the centre – I am in the centre -, but to go and visit the suburbs is the presence of the bishop there.
It is unthinkable that all this could take place in an orderly and safe fashion without the active and generous collaboration of the authorities of the Capitoline and national municipalities. In this regard, I warmly thank the municipal authorities for their commitment in preparing Rome to welcome the pilgrims of the forthcoming Jubilee, and I thank the Italian Government for its full willingness to cooperate with the ecclesiastical authorities for the success of the Jubilee, confirming the desire for friendly cooperation that characterizes the mutual relations between Italy and the Holy See, which are human relations. Many times, pettiness can lead us to think that relations are about money: no, this is secondary. They are human relations between authorities.
GOD’s JUBILEE – Leviticus 258 And thou shalt number seven sabbaths of years unto thee, seven times seven years; and the space of the seven sabbaths of years shall be unto thee forty and nine years.
9 Then shalt thou cause the trumpet of the jubilee to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month, in the day of atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your land.
10 And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof:it shall be a jubilee unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family.
11A jubilee shall that fiftieth year be unto you: ye shall not sow, neither reap that which groweth of itself in it, nor gather the grapes in it of thy vine undressed.
12 For it is the jubilee; it shall be holy unto you:ye shall eat the increase thereof out of the field.
13 In the year of this jubilee ye shall return every man unto his possession.
14 And if thou sell ought unto thy neighbour, or buyest ought of thy neighbour’s hand, ye shall not oppress one another:
15 According to the number of years after the jubilee thou shalt buy of thy neighbour, and according unto the number of years of the fruits he shall sell unto thee:
16 According to the multitude of years thou shalt increase the price thereof, and according to the fewness of years thou shalt diminish the price of it: for according to the number of the years of the fruits doth he sell unto thee.
17 Ye shall not therefore oppress one another;but thou shalt fear thy God:for I am the Lord your God.
18 Wherefore ye shall do my statutes, and keep my judgments, and do them; and ye shall dwell in the land in safety.
19 And the land shall yield her fruit, and ye shall eat your fill, and dwell therein in safety.
late 14c., in the Old Testament sense, from Old French jubileu “jubilee; anniversary; rejoicing” (14c., Modern French jubilé), from Late Latin iubilaeus“the jubilee year,” originally an adjective, “of the jubilee,”from Greek iabelaios, from iobelos, from Hebrew yobhel“jubilee,” formerly “a trumpet, ram’s horn,” literally “ram.”The original jubilee was a year of emancipation of slaves and restoration of lands, to be celebrated every 50th year (Levit. xxv:9); it was proclaimed by the sounding of a ram’s horn on the Day of Atonement. The form of the word was altered in Latin by association with unrelated Latin iubilare“to shout with joy” (for which see jubilant), and the confusion of senses has continued in the Romanic languages and English. The general sense of “season of rejoicing” is first recorded mid-15c. in English, however through early 20c. the word kept its specific association with 50th anniversaries. As a type of African-American folk song, it is attested from 1872. The Catholic Church sense of“a period for remission of sin penalties in exchange for pilgrimages, alms, etc.” was begun in 1300 by Boniface VIII.
CATHOLIC JUBILEE 2025
As many know, the Jubilee is a special year of grace, in which the Catholic Church offers the faithful the possibility of asking for a plenary indulgence, that is, the remission of sins for themselves or for deceased relatives.A Jubilee usually lasts a year and a few days: it begins just before the Christian Christmas and ends the Epiphany of the following year. The most exciting and well-known rite is certainly the opening of the Holy Door. This gate is open only during the jubilee year and the 4 main ones are the major basilicas of Rome: St. Peter, Archbasilica of St John Lateran, St. Paul Outside the Walls and St Mary Major. The first to be opened is St. Peter’s Basilica, the other doors are opened in the following days and remain open until the end of the Jubilee when they are once again walled up.
Pilgrimages, works of mercy, acts of penance, and more are ways Catholics can obtain an indulgence during the celebratory year.
A plenary indulgence is the remission of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, offered by the Church through the merits of Jesus Christ. The faithful Christian can gain these indulgences under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church, which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority, according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church 1471.
In order to obtain these indulgences, along with the specified requirements for the Jubilee indulgences, the faithful must:
Have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin.
Have sacramentally confessed their sins 20 days before or after receiving the indulgence.
Receive the Holy Eucharist.
Pray for the intentions of the pope. This can usually be done by praying one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one Glory Be.
Plenary indulgences obtained during the Jubilee Year can also be applied to souls in purgatory with the possibility of obtaining two plenary indulgences for the deceased in one day, according to the Apostolic Penitentiary.
Make a pilgrimage to Rome, the Holy Land, and more
One way Catholics can obtain a Jubilee indulgence is by making a pilgrimage to Rome and visiting at least one of the four major papal basilicas: St. Peter’s Basilica, the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major, or St. Paul Outside the Walls.
In addition, an indulgence can be obtained by spending time in prayer in several other churches in Rome including Rome’s Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem, Basilica of St. Lawrence Outside the Walls, Basilica of St. Sebastian, Sanctuary of Divine Love (the “Divino Amore”), Church of the Holy Spirit in Sassia, Church of St. Paul at Tre Fontane (the site of St. Paul’s martyrdom), or the Roman Catacombs.
Indulgences can also be granted specifically for making pilgrimage to churches in Rome connected to great female saints. These churches include the Basilica of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva (tomb of St. Catherine of Siena), St. Brigid at Campo de’ Fiori (St. Brigid of Sweden), Santa Maria della Vittoria (St. Teresa of Ávila), Trinità dei Monti (St. Thérèse of Liseux), Basilica of St. Cecilia in Trastevere (St. Cecilia), the Basilica of Sant’Augustino in Campo Marzio (St. Monica).
Sites
Pilgrimage sites include churches, shrines, and places where saints lived or were martyred.
Activities
Pilgrims may participate in prayer, sacraments, and the veneration of relics SOURCE
Perform an act of mercy
During the Year of Jubilee, Pope Francis is calling on all Catholics to be “pilgrims of hope.” In order to emphasize this theme of hope, the Apostolic Penitentiary is offering indulgences for those who practice corporal and spiritual works of mercy. The decree lists visiting prisoners, spending time with lonely elderly people, aiding the sick or disabled, and helping those who are in need as examples.
The faithful can repeat these acts of mercy throughout the Jubilee Year, even daily, acquiring a plenary indulgence each time. Indulgences usually are only granted once a day, but for the Year of Jubilee in 2025, the faithful can obtain up to two per day. This includes receiving communion twice a day.
“Despite the rule that only one plenary indulgence can be obtained per day, the faithful who have carried out an act of charity on behalf of the souls in purgatory, if they receive holy Communion a second time that day, can obtain the plenary indulgence twice on the same day, applicable only to the deceased,” according to the decree.
Offer up penance
The pope is also offering indulgences for those who practice penance throughout the year. He emphasizes how the traditional Friday penance can be rediscovered through abstaining, in a spirit of penance, at least for one day of the week from futile distractions. These include virtual distractions such as the use of the media and or social networks.
This can also include donating a proportionate sum of money to the poor or by supporting works of a religious or social nature, especially in support of the defense and protection of life in all its phases, but also by supporting the quality of life of abandoned children, young people in difficulty, the needy or lonely elderly people, or migrants from various countries.
Penance
In the past, pilgrimages were sometimes required as penance for grave sins. Pilgrims would walk barefoot, wear tattered clothing, and beg for food.SOURCE
The Roman Catholic Church considers mortification of the flesh to be a worthy spiritual discipline. This practice is rooted in the Bible and the asceticism of saints in the Old and New Testaments. Some examples of self-mortification include:
Fasting: Catholics often fast as a form of spiritual discipline and penance.
Flagellation: Some Christian confraternities of penitents, including the Capuchins, practice flagellation as a form of mortification.
Wearing a cilice (A garment or undergarment made of coarse cloth or animal hair worn close to the skin as a form of self-punishment and repentance)
Simple lifestyle: Some monastics take vows of poverty as a form of mortification.
Self-denial: This can include abstaining from meat, alcohol, or sexual relations SOURCE

Rome is a city with a universal spirit. This spirit wishes to be at the service of charity, at the service of welcome and hospitality. May pilgrims, tourists, migrants, those in dire straits, the poorest, the lonely, the sick, prisoners, the excluded, be the truest witnesses of this spirit – which is why I have decided to open a Holy Door in a prison– and may they bear witness that authority is fully such when it places itself at the service of all, when it uses its legitimate power to meet the needs of the citizenry and, in particular, of the weakest, the last. And this is not only for you politicians, it is also for priests, for bishops. Closeness, closeness to God’s people to serve them, to accompany them. HOW is there a HOLY DOOR in a prison??? What does that even mean?
May Rome continue to show its face, a welcoming, hospitable, generous, noble face. The enormous influx of pilgrims, tourists and migrants into the city, with all this entails in terms of organization, could be seen as an aggravation, a burden that slows down and hinders the normal flow of things. In reality, all this is Rome, its specificity, unique in the world, its honour, its great attractionand its responsibility towards Italy, towards the Church, towards the human family. Its every problem is the “flip side” of its greatness and, from being a crisis factor, can become an opportunity for development: civil, social, economic, cultural.
The immense treasure of culture and history nestled in the hills of Rome is the honour and the burden of its citizenry and its rulers, and expects to be properly valued and respected. May everyone be aware of the value of Rome,of the symbol that it represents in all continents– let us not forget the myth of Rome’s origin as a rebirth from the ruins of Troy – and may the reciprocal active collaboration between all the powers that reside there be confirmed, or rather, may it grow, by a choral and constant action that makes it even more worthy of the role that destiny, or rather Providence, has reserved for it.
For decades, ever since I was a young priest, I was always devoted to the Salus Populi Romani, and every time I went to Rome, I visited her. I ask her, the Salus Populi Romani (Salus Populi Romani is a Catholic title associated with the venerated image of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Rome. Byzantine idol of the Madonna and Child), who watches over the city and people of Rome, to instil hope and inspire charity, so that, confirming its most noble traditions, it may continue to be, in our time too, a beacon of civilization and a promoter of peace.

Pope Francis gazed over the ancient ruins of the Roman Forum during a visit to Rome’s historic Capitoline Hill on Monday in which he reflected on how the “Rome of the Caesars’” transformed into the “Rome of the Popes.”
Standing shoulder to shoulder with Rome’s mayor Roberto Gualtieri, the pope took in the view from a balcony overlooking the third-century Arch of Septimius Severus of the archaeological site of what was once the heart of ancient Rome.
Pope Francis praised ancient Rome as “a radiating center of civilization,” which with its legal developments and organizational capacities built solid and lasting institutions and an ancient culture with “many good values, which on the other hand needed to elevate itself, to confront a greater message of fraternity, love, hope, and liberation.”
“The Good News, or rather the Christian faith, over time would permeate and transform the life of people and of the institutions themselves,” he said. “It would offer people a far more radical and unprecedented hope.”
“The shining witness of the martyrs and the dynamism of charity of the first communities of believers tapped into the need to hear new words, the words of eternal life,” he added. “Olympus was no longer enough; one had to go to Golgotha and to the empty tomb of the Risen One to find the answers to the yearning for truth, justice, and love.”
In his reflection on the Roman Empire, Pope Francis also noted how the prevalence of slavery in ancient Rome is an example of how “even refined civilizations can present cultural elements so rooted in the mentality of people and of the entire society that they are no longer perceived as contrary to the dignity of the human being.”
He compared the Romans’ acceptance of slavery to how some societies today “risk being selective and partial in the defense of human dignity, marginalizing or discarding certain categories of people, who end up finding themselves without adequate protection.”
Pope Francis recalled how the city of Rome “since its birth some 2,800 years ago has had a clear and continuing vocation of universality.”
“Many things have changed, but Rome’s vocation to universality was confirmed and exalted,” he added. “In fact, if the geographical horizon of the Roman Empire had its heart in the Mediterranean world and, although very vast, did not involve the whole world, the mission of the Church has no boundaries on this earth, because it must make Christ, his action, and his words of salvation known to all peoples.”
After the speech, the pope offered a greeting from the Senatorial Palace balcony overlooking the Piazza del Campidoglio, the public square designed by Michalangelo atop Rome’s ancient Capitoline Hill, and offered a prayer for the city of Rome as it prepares for the 2025 Jubilee.
The Vatican and the city of Rome are expecting an estimated 35 million people to flock to the Eternal City for the 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope— the first ordinary jubilee since the Great Jubilee of 2000. THE ONLY ETERNAL CITY IS JERUSALEM!!
Pope Francis noted that while the influx of pilgrims, tourists, and migrants to the city of Rome may appear to be “a burden” for local citizens, the reality is that Rome is “unique in the world” and with that has “a responsibility … to the human family.”
“The immense treasure of culture and history nestled in the hills of Rome is the honor and the burden of its citizenry and its rulers, and expects to be properly valued and respected,” he added. More than 350 construction and renovation projects are taking place in the city of Rome in preparation for the Jubilee Year, including the 79.5-million-euro (about $86.4 million) Piazza Pia transformation and the 4-million-euro (about $4.3 million) Piazza Risorgimento redevelopment.
The pope told the city officials that while the Jubilee is a religious event as “a prayerful and penitential pilgrimage,” it will also “be able to have a positive impact on the face of the city itself, improving its decorum and making public services more efficient.”
“Rome is a city with a universal spirit. This spirit wants to be at the service of charity, at the service of welcome and hospitality,” Pope Francis said.
“Pilgrims, tourists, migrants, those in serious difficulty, the poorest, the lonely, the sick, prisoners, the excluded are the most truthful witnesses of this spirit,” he added. “And these can testify that authority is fully such when it places itself at the service of all, when it uses its legitimate power to meet the needs of citizens and, in particular, of the weakest, the least.”

Francis has been juggling papal titles in the Annuario Pontificio (Pontifical Yearbook). He’s just reassigned to himself the title “Patriarch of the West”— a title Pope Benedict XVI jettisoned.“Patriarch of the West” negates universal jurisdiction,a triumph for Patriarch Bartholomew!
In 2020, Francis dumped the title “Vicar of Christ” into a section of the Annuario Pontificio categorized under the rubric of “historical titles.”The new edition of the Pontifical Yearbook had a single page with Francis downgrading himself as “Francis, bishop of Rome.”
Cardinal Gerhard Müller excoriated Francis’s shuffling of papal honorifics, noting: “It is theological barbarism to devalue the pope’s titles‘Successor of Peter, Vicar of Christ, and visible head of the whole Church’ as mere historical ballast.”
Trolled yet again by Pope Francis, traditionalist and conservative Catholics wept and gnashed their teeth on Twitter, tearing their robes like the high priest in Matthew’s gospel, shouting:“He hath spoken blasphemy, what further need have we of witnesses?”
In the latest Vatican yearbook, the Annuario Pontificio, the title “Vicar of Christ” does not appear on the listing for Pope Francis.
In the 2020 edition of the Annuario, the page devoted to Pope Francis is headed simply by his name:Jorge Maria Bergoglio.Past editions have always been headed by the titles accorded to the Pope, beginning with “Vicar of Jesus Christ.”Other titles have been “Successor of the Prince of the Apostles, Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church, Primate of Italy, Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Roman province, Sovereign of the Vatican City-State.” In the 2020 edition, these titles appear at the bottom of the page devoted to Pope Francis, identified only as “historical” titles.
Such a change would undoubtedly have required the approval of the Pontiff.
In 2006, Pope Benedict XVIdropped another traditional title: “Patriarch of the West.”The Vatican explained that the elimination of this title “could prove useful to ecumenical dialogue.”The statement also noted that the significance of that title “was never very clear, and over history has become obsolete and practically unusable.”
The title “Vicar of Jesus Christ,” on the other hand, has a clear and unmistakable theological significance.Cardinal Gerhard Müller, the former prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, said that downgrading the title was a “theological barbarism.”
To date the Vatican has not issued any explanation for the change.
Vatican, Mar. 01, 2006 (CWNews.com) – Pope Benedict XVI has dropped one of the traditional titles of the Roman Pontiff.
Evidently hoping to eliminate one possible obstacle to ecumenical progress with the Orthodox world, the Holy Father has renounced the title “Patriarch of the West.”
The new 2006 edition of the Annuario Pontificio, the official Vatican yearbook, carries 8 other traditional titles for the Pope, but does not include the “Patriarch of the West” designation that appeared in previous editions. The first ceremonial copy of the Annuario was presented to Pope Benedict on February 18; the volume will not go on sale to the public until mid-March.
The Pope is now identified in the Annuario as: “Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Jesus Christ, Successor of the Prince of the Apostles, Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church, Primate of Italy, Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Roman province, Sovereign of the State of the Vatican City, Servant of the Servants of God.”
Pope Benedict, who reportedly made the decision himself to drop the title, evidently wished to eliminate any notion that the Holy See represents the Church of “the West,” and is therefore separate from the Eastern tradition.
The designation “Patriarch of the West,” which traditionally appeared in that list of titles just before “Primate of Italy,” has rarely been employed since the Great Schism of 1054,which separated the Orthodox churches from the Holy See.From the Orthodox perspective, authority in the Church could be traced to the five original patriarchates of Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem. But some Catholic theologians– notably the late Cardinal Yves Congar– have argued that the term “Patriarch of the West” has no clear historical or theological basis. It was introduced into papal nomenclature in 1870, at the time of the First Vatican Council. Pope Benedict chose to remove the title at a time when discussions with the Orthodox churches have centered on the issue of papal primacy. The Holy Father wishes to emphasize the service that the Bishop of Rome performs for the entire Christian community, as the focus of unity in the universal Church.Pope John Paul II (bio – news)– who reportedly considered dropping the “Patriarch of the West” title during his own pontificate– had also emphasizes this service to the universal Church. And Pope Paul VI made the same point by signing the documents of Vatican II as Episcopus Catholicae Ecclesiae, confirming that the Bishop of Rome is the pastor of the universal Church.
The titles accorded to the Roman Pontiff have developed over the centuries, with the different designations reflecting the shifts in perception of the Pope’s power and apostolic authority. The very term “pope” was not always used exclusively in reference to the Bishop of Rome. It was applied to other bishops until the 11th century, when Pope Gregory VII issued an order that the title Pope should be reserved for the successor to St. Peter.
The first title listed for the Pontiff, “Bishop of Rome,” sets out the primary function of the Pope, who is elected by the clergy of Rome (represented by the College of Cardinals in a conclave). The richest of his titles is “Vicar of Christ,” which refers not to his temporal power but to his divine commission. This title came into use in the 5th and 6th centuries.
Beginning in the 12th century, as Roman Pontiffs claimed greater authority over diocesan bishops, new titles were introduced. Pope Innocent IV (1234-1254) claimed the title “Vicar of God”— a term that is no longer used. The First Vatican Council definitively established the authority of the Pope, as the primacy conferred by Christ upon Peter and his successors.Vatican II confirmed the titles “Vicar of Christ” and “Successor of Peter.”
The term “Sovereign Pontiff” can be traced back to the close of the 5th century. The title, which has its origins in the title for the Roman emperors of an earlier era,was initially applied to all metropolitan archbishops.Again it was in the 11th century that the title came to be applied exclusively to the Bishop of Rome. The addition of the phrase “of the Universal Church” is a more recent alteration of this title.
The final title attached to the Pope, “Servant of the Servants of God,”was used by Church leaders including Sts. Augustine and Benedict. It was not reserved for the Pope until the 13th century. The documents of Vatican II reinforce the understanding of this title as a reference to the Pope’s role as a function of collegial authority, in which the Bishop of Rome serves the world’s bishops.
The titles “Primate of Italy,” “Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Roman province,” and “Sovereign of the State of the Vatican City” are references to the legal and canonical authority of the Pope as defined by the laws of the Church and the Lateran Accords of 1929. spacer

The prophecy of the last pope, Peter the Roman, is part of a list of verses known as the “Prophecy of the Popes” attributed to the 9th century Irish Saint Malachy. The prophecy predicts that the final pope will be named Peter the Roman, and that his reign will end with the destruction of Rome. The prophecy is translated from Latin to English as:
“In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church, there will sit Peter the Roman, who will pasture his sheep in many tribulations, and when these things are finished, the city of seven hills [i.e. Rome] will be destroyed, and the dreadful judge will judge his people”.
Fr. Sosa, who previously served as Delegate of the General for the International Houses and Works of the Society of Jesus in Rome, was elected by the 212 Jesuit electors at the General Congregation, the supreme governing body of the Society. He succeeds Father Adolfo Nicolás, SJ, 80, who resigned after serving as Superior General since 2008.
Fr. Sosa was born in Caracas, Venezuela, on November 12, 1948. Raised in a Catholic family that valued academics, he remembers being encouraged to “open up to the world, to study languages.” His father was a lawyer/economist who took his son on business trips. They would arrive in a new city and ride the trolley so young Arturo could open his eyes to “an ever-greater reality so that I would not remain enclosed in what I already knew.”
He entered the Society of Jesus in September 1966 and was ordained a priest in 1977. He holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the Catholic University Andrés Bello in Caracas, a bachelor’s degree in theology from the Gregorian University in Rome and a doctorate in political science from the Universidad Central de Venezuela. He was provincial superior of the Society of Jesus in Venezuela from 1996 to 2004.
As the rector of the Universidad de Frontera in Tachira, 600miles from Caracas near the border with Colombia, Fr. Sosa worked on an apostolic project that brought people together on both sides of the border. He also helped organize Jesuit universities in Latin America into an effective network to fight poverty and promote youth leadership. Fe y Alegría, which offers educational opportunities for the poor in 21 countries, was always a priority.
At only 34, he was elected as a delegate to the Jesuits’ General Congregation 33, the youngest delegate of that congregation; he also took part in GC 34 and GC 35. During GC 35, Fr. Sosa was named by his predecessor, Father Adolfo Nicolás, SJ, to a leadership role, helping to advise on matters related to the governance of the Society.
Fr. Sosa is quick to champion the need for collaboration, saying, “The Society of Jesus makes no sense without the collaboration of others … in many places we are still nostalgic about the days when we could do everything.”
The Society of Jesus also known as the Jesuit Order or the Jesuits is a religious order of clerics regular of pontifical right for men in the Catholic …
Sep 4, 2024 — During his first full day in Indonesia, Pope Francis met with members of his Jesuit order in the capital Jakarta.
Francis traditionally speaks with members of the Jesuits during all of his international visits. Spadaro – the editor of La Civiltà Cattolica and consultor at Pontifical Council for Culture and the Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication – usually publishes a full account of these meetings in his news magazine.
On Wednesday morning, Francis met with around 200 members of the Society of Jesus, which Spadaro was a “familiar, relaxed and acute meeting.”
The meeting lasted an hour, and the Jesuit priest told Vatican News it was punctuated by a spontaneous dialogue with questions and answers, personal confidences and some jokes.
“It was a family moment, as is usual,” explained Spadaro.
“Pope Francis is always very relaxed, he feels at home, so he is able to give the first feedback on the visit,” he said.
The Jesuit priest said the number of young Indonesian brothers attracted the pontiff’s attention.
“It is perhaps the thing that struck me the most, the Holy Father noticed how young the Jesuits present in formation in Indonesia are,” he explained.
“The pope spoke about the Society, the importance of discernment and prayer. The younger ones asked him where he finds time to pray and he told some anecdotes,” Spadaro said, adding that all the themes discussed were intertwined with what was important in Indonesia “such as interreligious dialogue or inculturation, on which he insisted very much.”
“The pope loves to speak with his brothers, relaxed and in a free and spontaneous way, but he has precise rhythms,” he said.
The Jesuit priest said Francis emphasized the importance of young people and the contribution of Christians in the country. He said the pope wanted to meet the young men training to be Jesuits.
“A young Society of Jesus which also says a young Church,” Spadaro told Vatican News.
“Francis – he loves those Churches that I define as ‘zero point.’Here we are at 3 percent, therefore a small percentage of the population, however there are 8 million and there is a significant presence within the country,”he said.
“The goal of the Christian is to contribute to the growth of the country; to be like leaven kneaded into the dough: This is really important for the pope. The message for Christians is that they collaborate fully for the common good, beyond the numbers; for the Holy Father what matters is liveliness, generative capacity,” he said.
Spadaro noted the pope will have a total of three meetings with Jesuits during his Asian trip– meeting also with members of the Order in Dili and Singapore.
“Both in this meeting this morning but also in the others we have had up to now, Pope Francis sees a possibility in this land, the possibility of harmony within a pluralistic context,” he explained.
“Even the president today spoke of harmony and pluralism. I believe there is hope here for such a threatened future, at a time when the world is divided and fractured. Therefore, the pope’s eyes are very open to reality and to the search for a future,” the Jesuit said.
When a Jesuit novice is about to be inducted into the higher levels of the Order, he kneels on a red cross before the Superior of the Order. Before him are two flags, the familiar yellow and white flag of the papacy, and the black flag with a dagger and red cross above a skull and crossbones, the flag of the Jesuit Order. On the Jesuit flag is written the words, IUSTUM, NECAR, REGES, IMPIOS. (It is just to exterminate or annihilate impious or heretical kings, governments, or rulers.) The Superior of the Order hands the novice a small black crucifix which he presses to his heart, and the Superior then presents to the novice a dagger. The novice grasps the bare blade and presses the point to his heart. The Superior, still holding the hilt of the dagger then speaks to the novice.
Superior
My son, heretofore you have been taught to act the dissembler: among Roman Catholics to be a Roman Catholic, and to spy even among your own brethren; to believe no man, to trust no man. Among the Reformers, to be a Reformer; among the Huguenots, to be a Huguenot; among the Calvinists, to be a Calvinist; among the Protestants, generally to be a Protestant; and obtaining their confidence to seek even to preach from their pulpits and to denounce with all the vehemence in your nature our Holy Religion and the Pope; and to descend so low as to become a Jew among the Jews, that you might be enabled to gather together all information for your Order as a faithful soldier of the Pope. You have been taught to insidiously plant the seeds of jealousy and hatred between communities, provinces and states that were at peace, and incite them to deeds of blood, involving them in war with each other, and to create revolutions and civil wars in countries that were independent and prosperous, cultivating the arts and sciences and enjoying the blessings of peace. To take sides with the combatants and to act secretly in concert with your brother Jesuit, who may be engaged on the other side, but openly opposed to that with which you might be connected; only that the Church might be the gainer in the end, in the conditions fixed in the treaties for peace and that the end justifies the means. You have been taught your duty as a spy, to gather all statistics, facts and information in your power from every source; to ingratiate yourself into the confidence of the family circle of Protestants and heretics of every class and character, as well as that of the merchant, the banker, the lawyer, among the schools and universities, in parliaments and legislatures, and in the judiciaries councils of state, and to “be all things to all men,” for the Pope’s sake, whose servants we are unto death. You have received all your instructions heretofore as a novice, a neophyte, and have served as a coadjutor, confessor and priest, but you have not been invested with all that is necessary to command in the Army of Loyola in the service of the Pope. You must serve the proper time as the instrument and executioner as directed by your superiors; for none can command here who has not consecrated his labors with the blood of the heretic; for “without the shedding of blood no man can be saved.” Therefore, to fit yourself for your work, and make your own salvation sure, you will, in addition to your former oath of obedience to your Order and your allegiance to the Pope, repeat after me.I, M
N
, Now, in the presence of Almighty God, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the blessed Michael the Archangel, the blessed St. John the Baptist, the holy Apostles St. Peter and St. Paul and all the saints and the sacred hosts of heaven, and to you, my ghostly father, the Superior general of the Society of Jesus, founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola, in the Pontificate of Paul the Third, and continued to the present, do by the womb of the Virgin, the matrix of God, and the rod of Jesus Christ, declare and swear, that his holiness the Pope is Christ’s Viceregent and is the true and only Head of the Catholic or Universal Church throughout the earth; and that by virtue of the keys of binding and loosing, given to his Holiness by my Saviour, Jesus Christ, he hath power to depose heretical kings, princes, states, commonwealths and governments, all being illegal without his sacred confirmation and that they may safely be destroyed.
Therefore, to the utmost of my power, I shall and will defend this doctrine and his Holiness’ right and custom against all usurpers of the heretical or Protestant authority, and all adherents in the regard that they be usurped and heretical, opposing the sacred Mother Church of Rome.
I do now renounce and disown any allegiance as due to any heretical king, prince or state named Protestants or Liberals or obedience to any of their laws, magistrates or officers. I do further declare that the doctrines of the churches of England and Scotland, of the Calvinists, Huguenots and others of the name Protestants or Liberals to be damnable, and they themselves damned and to be damned who will not forsake the same.
I do further declare that I will help, assist and advise all or any of his Holiness’ agents in any place wherever I shall be, in any other kingdom or territory I shall come to, and do my uttermost to extirpate the heretical Protestants or Liberals’ doctrines and to destroy all their pretended powers, regal or otherwise.
I do further promise and declare, that notwithstanding I am dispensed with, to assume any religion heretical, for the propagating of the Mother Church’s interest, to keep secret and private all her agents counsels’ from time to time, as they may entrust me, and not to divulge, directly or indirectly, by word, writing or circumstance whatever; but to execute all that shall be proposed, given in charge or discovered unto me, by you, my ghostly father, or any of this sacred convent.
I do further promise and declare, that I will have no opinion or will of my own, or any mental reservation whatever, even as a corpse or cadaver, (perinde ac cadaver,) but will unhesitatingly obey each and every command that I may receive from my superiors in the Militia of the Pope and Jesus Christ. That I will go to any part of the world whithersoever I may be sent, without murmuring or repining, and will be submissive in all things commanded to me.
I furthermore promise and declare that I will, when opportunity presents, make and wage relentless war, secretly or openly, against all heretics, Protestants and Liberals, as I am directed to do, to extirpate and exterminate them from the face of the whole earth; and that I will spare neither age, nor sex or condition; and that I will hang, burn, waste, spoil, flay, strangle, and bury alive these infamous heretics, rip up the stomachs and wombs of their women and crush their infants’ heads against the walls, in order to annihilate forever their execrable race.
That when the same cannot be done openly, I will secretly use the poisoned cup, the strangulating cord, the steel of the poinard or the leaden bullet, regardless of the honor, rank, dignity, or authority of the person or persons, whatever may be their condition in life, either public or private, as I at any time may be directed to do so by any agent of the Pope or Superior of the Brotherhood of the Holy Faith, of the Society of Jesus.
In confirmation of which, I hereby dedicate my life, soul, and all of my coporeal powers, and with this dagger which I now receive, I will subscribe my name written in my own blood, in testimony thereof; and should I prove false or weaken in my determination, may my brethren and fellow soldiers of the Militia of the Pope cut off my hands and feet, and my throat from ear to ear, my belly opened and sulphur burned therein, with all the punishment that can be inflicted upon me on earth, and my soul to be tortured by demons in an eternal hell forever. (This is a BLOOD OATH, which GOD strictly forbids!)
All of which I, M
N
, do swear by the blessed Trinity and blessed Sacrament, which I am about to receive, to perform and on my part to receive inviolably; and do call all of the heavenly and glorious host of heaven to witness these my real intentions to keep this my oath.
In testimony hereof I take this most holy and blessed sacrament of the
Eucharist, and witness the same further, with my name written with the point of this dagger dipped in my own blood and sealed in the face of this holy convent.
Superior
You will now rise to your feet and I will instruct you in the Catechism
necessary to make yourself known to any member of the Society of Jesus belonging to this rank.
In the first place, you, as a Brother Jesuit, will with another make the
ordinary sign of the cross as any Roman Catholic would; then one crosses his wrists, the palms of his hands open, the other crosses his feet, one above the other; the first points with forefinger of the right hand to the center of the palm of the left, the other with the forefinger of the left hand points to the center of the palm of the right; the first then with his right hand makes a circle around his head, touching it; the other then with the forefinger of his left hand touches the left side of his body just below his heart; then the first with his right hand draws it across the throat of the other, and the latter then with his right hand makes the motion of cutting with a dagger down the stomach and abdomen of the first.
The first then says Iustum; the other answers Necar; the first then says Reges. The other answers Impios. The first will then present a small piece of paper folded in a peculiar manner, four times, which the other will cut longitudinally and on opening the name JESU will be found written upon the head and arms of a cross three times. You will then give and receive with him the following questions and answers.
Q: From where do you come?
A: From the bends of the Jordan, from Calvary, from the Holy Sepulchre, and lastly from Rome.
Q: Whom do you serve?
A: The Holy Father at Rome, the Pope, and the Roman Catholic Church Universal throughout the world.
Q: Who commands you?
A: The successor of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus or the Soldiers of Jesus Christ.
Q: Who received you?
A: A venerable man with white hair.
Q: How?
A: With a naked dagger, I kneeling on a cross beneath the banners of the Pope and of our sacred Order.
Q: Did you take an oath? A: I did, to destroy heretics and their governments and rulers, and to spare neither age, sex or condition. To be as a corpse without any opinion or will of my own, but to implicitly obey my superiors in all things without hesitation or murmuring.
Q: Will you do that?
A: I will.
Q: How do you travel?
A: In the bark of Peter the fisherman.
Q: Whither do you travel?
A: To the four quarters of the globe.
Q: For what purpose?
A: To obey the orders of my General and Superiors and execute the will of the Pope and faithfully fulfill the conditions of my oath.
Go ye, then, into all the world and take possession of all lands in the name of the Pope. He who will not accept him as the Vicar of Jesus and his Viceregent on earth, let him be accursed and exterminated
Most professing Christians today do not study the Revelation of Jesus Christ and those that do hold to an interpretation devised by the Jesuits. One of the greatest trouble verses for them is Revelation 17:9 which clearly identifies Rome as the seat of the Antichrist. To uphold their doctrines they must flatten the seven mountains spoken of and this is exactly what they attempt to do. I pray that the truth of God’s Word (in the original Greek or otherwise) and the testimony of history will bring Chris White and others to reconsider their views on the Revelation and the Antichrist. The identification of the Pope with the Antichrist was so ingrained in the Reformation Era, that Luther himself stated it repeatedly:
“This teaching [of the supremacy of the pope] shows forcefully that the Pope is the very Antichrist, who has exalted himself above, and opposed himself against Christ, because he will not permit Christians to be saved without his power, which, nevertheless, is nothing, and is neither ordained nor commanded by God”.[32]
and,
“nothing else than the kingdom of Babylon and of the very Antichrist. For who is the man of sin and the son of perdition, but he who by his teaching and his ordinances increases the sin and perdition of souls in the church; while he yet sits in the church as if he were God? All these conditions have now for many ages been fulfilled by the papal tyranny.”[33]
“Though it be admitted that Rome was once the mother of all Churches, yet from the time when it began to be the seat of Antichrist it has ceased to be what it was before. Some persons think us too severe and censorious when we call the Roman Pontiff Antichrist. But those who are of this opinion do not consider that they bring the same charge of presumption against Paul himself, after whom we speak and whose language we adopt .. I shall briefly show that (Paul’s words in II Thess. 2) are not capable of any other interpretation than that which applies them to the Papacy.”[34]
“Yea, to speak it in plain words; lest that we submit ourselves to Satan, thinking that we submit ourselves to Jesus Christ, for, as for your Roman kirk, as it is now corrupted, and the authority thereof, whereon stands the hope of your victory, I no more doubt but that it is the synagogue of Satan, and the head thereof, called the pope, to be that man of sin, of whom the apostle speaks.“[35]
“Whereof it followeth Rome to be the seat of Antichrist, and the pope to be very antichrist himself. I could prove the same by many other scriptures, old writers, and strong reasons.“[36]
John Wesley, speaking of the identity given in the Bible of the Antichrist, wrote:
“In many respects, the Pope has an indisputable claim to those titles. He is, in an emphatical sense, the man of sin, as he increases all manner of sin above measure. And he is, too, properly styled, the son of perdition, as he has caused the death of numberless multitudes, both of his opposers and followers, destroyed innumerable souls, and will himself perish everlastingly. He it is that opposeth himself to the emperor, once his rightful sovereign; and that exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped – Commanding angels, and putting kings under his feet, both of whom are called gods in scripture; claiming the highest power, the highest honour; suffering himself, not once only, to be styled God or vice-God. Indeed no less is implied in his ordinary title, “Most Holy Lord,” or, “Most Holy Father.” So that he sitteth – Enthroned. In the temple of God – Mentioned Rev. xi, 1. Declaring himself that he is God – Claiming the prerogatives which belong to God alone.”[37]
“the pretended Vicar of Christ on earth, who sits as God over the Temple of God, exalting himself not only above all that is called God, but over the souls and consciences of all his vassals, yea over the Spirit of Christ, over the Holy Spirit, yea, and God himself … speaking against the God of heaven, thinking to change times and laws; but he is the Son of Perdition.”[38]
The identification of the Roman Catholic Church as the apostate power written of in the Bible as the Antichrist became evident to many as the Reformation began, including John Wycliffe, who was well-known throughout Europe for his opposition to the doctrine and practices of the Catholic Church, which he believed had clearly deviated from the original teachings of the early Church and to be contrary to the Bible. Wycliffe himself tells (Sermones, III. 199) how he concluded that there was a great contrast between what the Church was and what it ought to be, and saw the necessity for reform. Along with John Hus, they had started the inclination toward ecclesiastical reforms of the Catholic Church.
When the Swiss ReformerHuldrych Zwingli became the pastor of the Grossmünster in Zurich in 1518, he began to preach ideas on reforming the Catholic Church. Zwingli, who was a Catholic priest before he became a Reformer, often referred to the Pope as the Antichrist. He wrote: “I know that in it works the might and power of the Devil, that is, of the Antichrist”.[39]
The English ReformerWilliam Tyndale held that while the Roman Catholic realms of that age were the empire of Antichrist, any religious organization that distorted the doctrine of the Old and New Testaments also showed the work of Antichrist. In his treatise The Parable of the Wicked Mammon, he expressly rejected the established Church teaching that looked to the future for an Antichrist to rise up, and he taught that Antichrist is a present spiritual force that will be with us until the end of the age under different religious disguises from time to time.[40] Tyndale’s translation of 2 Thessalonians, chapter 2, concerning the “Man of Lawlessness” reflected his understanding, but was significantly amended by later revisers,[41] including the King James Bible committee, which followed the Vulgate more closely.
There are two principles that mark the papacy as the Antichrist. One is that the pope takes to himself the right to rule the church that belongs only to Christ. He can make laws forbidding the marriage of priests, eating or not eating meat on Friday, birth control, divorce and remarriage, even where there are not such laws in the Bible. The second is that he teaches that salvation is not by faith alone but by faith and works. The present pope upholds and practices these principles. This marks his rule as antichristian rule in the church. All popes hold the same office over the church and promote the same antichristian belief so they all are part of the reign of the Antichrist. The Bible does not present the Antichrist as one man for one short time, but as an office held by a man through successive generations. It is a title like King of England.[57]
With this week’s probable selection of the next Pope, I thought it would be helpful to review what theologians of the past have said about the papacy. Our age is an ecumenical one, and thus it is likely that many are ignorant of the fact that until about 50 years ago, most Protestant leaders viewed the Pope as the anti-Christ.
Prior to dispensational theology (to which I largely subscribe), there was not a focus among theologians of identifying a singular antichrist. It was widely if not universally held that anyone who opposed the gospel was an antichrist. But based on the the in 1 John 2:22 and 1 John 4:3 (“the antichrist”), as well as the prophecy of “the man of lawlessness” (2 Thess 2:3), church leaders for the last 500 years have generally held that whomever the Pope was at the time, that person fills the roll of the antichrist. It was not believed that there necessarily was a once for all antichrist, as Revelation implies, but rather the focus was on the leader of those who oppose the gospel. And it would be difficult to think of a group that has opposed the gospel (salvation by faith alone in Christ alone, through grace alone) to the extent of the Catholic Church.
The identification of the Pope as the antichrist was so ingrained in the Reformation era (for obvious reasons) that Luther stated it repeatedly. For example: “This teaching [of the supremacy of the pope] shows forcefully that the Pope is the very Antichrist, who has exalted himself above, and opposed himself against Christ, because he will not permit Christians to be saved without his power, which, nevertheless, is nothing, and is neither ordained nor commanded by God” (Smalcald Articles, II).
This was not a new idea for Luther. Seventeen years before the Smalcald Articles (which were essentially Luther’s own personal statement of faith), he preached a midweek sermon on the subject. The gist of his sermon is captured in this quote:
“We here are of the conviction that the papacy is the seat of the true and real Antichrist…personally I declare that I owe the Pope no other obedience than that to Antichrist” (sermon on Aug 18, 1520).
After Luther was condemned by a Papal bull, he wrote, “Already I feel greater liberty in my heart; for at last I know that the pope is antichrist, and that his throne is that of Satan himself.”
Melanchton, who led the Lutheran movement for four years after Luther died, carried on this theme. He wrote:
“Since it is certain that the pontiffs and the monks have forbidden marriage, it is most manifest, and true without any doubt, that the Roman Pontiff, with his whole order and kingdom, is very Antichrist. Likewise in 2 Thess. II, Paul clearly says that the man of sin will rule in the church exalting himself above the worship of God.” (Disputationes, No. 56, “On Marriage”).
In fact, the identification of the Pope as the antichrist has (until recently) been regarded as a central tenet to Lutheran theology. In 1860, for example, The Missouri Synod of the Lutheran Church rose to prominence when it split from the Iowa Synod over precisely this issue. The Iowa Synod balked at designating the Pope as the Anti-Christ, which until that point had been dogmatically asserted in Lutheran statements of faith. The Missouri Synod, in separating from the Iowa Synod, stated that “the prophecies of Antichrist have been fulfilled in the Papacy.”This split culminated in 1938, when they released this statement: “We accept [the historical position] that the Pope is the Antichrist. . . because among all the antichristian manifestations in the history of the world and the Church that lie behind us in the past there is none that fits the description given in 2 Thess 2 better than the Papacy” (American Lutheran Church Sandusky Declaration, VI).
Even in 1957 the Lutheran Synodical Conference sated that the designation of the Pope as the antichrist was:
“an important article and should not be side-stepped or slighted. It is clearly revealed in the divine word, and there is nothing needless and useless in the Bible.”
The idea of the Pope as the antichrist is not unique to Protestants. In fact, for the 40 years where two rival Popes both called each other antichrist (1378-1417), John Wycliffe humorously pointed out that they were each half right. He wrote that they were “two halves of Antichrist, making up the perfect Man of Sin between them.”
Zwingli, who was a Catholic priest before his conversion to Christ, often referred to the Pope as the antichrist. He wrote: “I know that in it works the might and power of the Devil, that is, of the Antichrist” (Principle Works of Zwingli, Vol. 7, p. 135).
Calvin devoted an entire section of The Institutes to this topic (Book IV, “Of the Popish Mass”). In that section, at length Calvin identifies the Pope as the antichrist for no other reason than he leads the Catholic Mass. “Let my readers understand that I am here combating that opinion with which the Roman Antichrist and his prophets have imbued the whole world—viz. that the mass is a work by which the priest who offers Christ, and the others who in the oblation receive him, gain merit with God.”
What is interesting in that section is that Calvin draws extensively from Augustine, who wrote (translated by Calvin into French, then into English): “It would be equivalent to Antichrist for anyone to make a bishop to be an intercessor between God and man.” There are other sections in The Institutes where Calvin simply uses the term antichrist as a synonym for pope.
Knox, who was a disciple of Calvin, shared Calvin’s equation of the pope with the antichrist. He wrote that for the gospel to make headway in Europe, the people there would first have to learn to identify the Pope as “the very antichrist, and son of perdition, of whom Paul speaks” (The Zürich Letters, 199).
The Lutherans were not alone in codifying the identity of the antichrist as the Pope. Both The London Confession of Faith and The Westminster Confession use identical language: “the Pope of Rome…is that antichrist, that man of sin, and son of perdition, that exalteth himself in the church against Christ, and all that is called God; whom the Lord shall destroy with the brightness of his coming” (chapter 26 of the The London Confession, and chapter 25, VI of the WC).
This explains why the Puritans were almost unanimous in their equation of the Pope as the antichrist. Cotton Mather authored The Fall of Babylon, where he connected the Papacy to the antichrist as described in Revelation. He wrote that “in the Pope of Rome, all the characteristics of that Antichrist are so marvelously answered that if any who read the Scriptures do not see it, there is a marvelous blindness upon them.”
A little known fact about Jonathan Edwards is that he actually wrote a church history book. Titled A History of the Work of Redemption(it is in Vol. 4 of the complete set of his works), he actually identifies the rise of the Papacy, which he places from 479-800, as “the rise of the antichrist.”Edwards describes the time period between 800 and the reformation as “the reign of the antichrist” and structures most of his outline around the theme of the gospel’s advance in relationship to the antichirst.
This was not a doctrine held only by Calvinists and Lutherans. Wesley wrote a book titled Antichrist and His Ten Kingdoms, and he too saw the antichrist of Revelation and of 2 Thessalonians as the Pope. He wrote:
“He is in an emphatical sense, the Man of Sin, as he increases all manner of sin above measure. And he is, too, properly styled the Son of Perdition” (110).
On that same page he writes that the Pope “exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshiped ..claiming the highest power, and highest honor…claiming the prerogatives which belong to God alone.”
Spurgeon often identified the Pope as the antichrist. It was regular theme in “The Sword and the Trowel” (eg. Jan 1866, Aug 1868) as well as in The Treasury of David (Psalms 10, 108 and 137, for example). But Spurgeon (as always) saved his most colorful language for his sermons. In this example, he was upset at the Anglican Church for looking too much like Rome:
“The Protestantism of England is the pay-master of the Pope. I am ashamed that sons of the Reformers… should bow themselves before the beast, and give so much as a single farthing to the shrine of the devil’s firstborn son. Take heed to yourselves, ye Protestants, lest ye be partakers of her plagues; touch her not, lest ye be defiled. Give a drachm to her, or a grain of incense to her censors, ye shall be partakers of her adulteries and partakers of her plagues. Every time you pass the house of Popery let a curse light upon her head: Thus saith the Lord:—‘Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins and that ye receive not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities” (Sermon 250, “War, War, War”).
Charles Hodge, in his Systematic Theology (of all places) built upon Spurgeon’s quotation of Revelation 18:4 (above), and justified the connection of that passage to the Pope(cf. Vol 3, p. 817). He also referenced the prophecies in Daniel and 2 Thessalonians, and shows how the only people in history that have fulfilled them are indeed Popes.
I give this long list simply to put forward a response to those that ask me if I care about who the next Pope will be. In short, I do not. And if calling the Pope the antichrist seems like a very unchristian thing to do, I assure you that it is not the theology of the thing that has changed in the last 50 years.Today’s reluctance to make that connection says a lot about how far our evangelical culture has drifted, and very little about the Pope.

UPDATE: For those who are Roman Catholics, Roman Catholic sympathizers, or otherwise can’t understand why we would resort to such strong condemnation of what seem to be nice people who claim to believe in Jesus Christ, please see this postthat explains the official tenets of Roman Catholicism and contrasts them with Biblical Christianity. If you want to debate those issues, do it on that comment thread. Also, if you have objections related to papal infallibility, the church fathers, canonicity or other issues related to the Catholic Church, please browse through our other posts on Catholicism, found here, which may have answered your objections.
In summary, here’s R. C. Sproul:
“At the moment the Roman Catholic Church condemned the biblical doctrine of justification by faith alone, she denied the Gospel and ceased to be a legitimate church, regardless of all the rest of her affirmations of Christian orthodoxy. To embrace her as an authentic church while she continues to repudiate the biblical doctrine of salvation is a fatal attribution.”
