In the Bible,the “old serpent” is a reference tothe Devil, or Satan, who is often depicted as a “great dragon”:
Revelation 12:9
“The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray“.
Revelation 12:7-9
“And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, and prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world“.
The dragon is described as a red, seven-headed beast with ten horns, each with a diadem.The dragon is said to have deceived Adam and Eve into rebelling against God, and continues to tempt people away from God. Source: AI
The Hebrew word for DRAGON:
The Hebrew word for dragon is tannîyn (תנין),which is pronounced “tahn-NEEN”. It is a rare word that is also translated as “sea monster” or “serpent”. In the Hebrew Bible, tannîyn is used to describe a terrifying sea dragon that symbolizes death, disorder, and chaos,and is ultimately defeated by God.
Here are some examples of tannîyn in the Bible:
Genesis 1:21
The first appearance of tannîyn in the Bible, in its plural form tanninim, refers to great sea creatures.
Isaiah 27:1
“On that day the LORD with his cruel and great and strong sword will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent,Leviathan the twisting serpent, and he will kill the dragon (התנין) that is in the sea”

A Spectacle in NYC: Empire State Building Debuts 270-Foot Vhagar the Dragon Coiled Around the Building’s Mast, in Partnership with Max
June 17, 2024
The massive dragon caps off the weeklong “House of the Dragon” takeover at the Observatory
NEW YORK (June 16, 2024) – A 270-foot-long dragon has landed in the center of New York City – atop the iconic Empire State Building (ESB). In partnership with Max, ESB has acknowledged that Vhagar the Dragon has coiled herself around its mast just as ESB and Max cap off their weeklong “House of the Dragon” takeover.
The best views of Vhagar are in Manhattan from the south of ESB, and unique selfie moments are available from ESB itself where she scans for prey with her huge head extended over the southern deck of ESB’s 86th Floor Observatory. ESB’s lights have been set so fans can witness a series of dynamic light shows which feature the dragon against schemes of gold, green, and red.
“Just after the Empire State Building pledged its allegiance to the King, Vhagar descended upon the heart of New York City and has claimed the mast of the ‘World’s Most Famous Building’ as her perch,” said ESRT Chairman and CEO Tony Malkin. “Citizens of Westeros can now sit in the Iron Throne at the Observatory’s grand staircase and then rise to the 86th Floor to face the colossal beast up close as they take in the unmatched, 360-degree views from our world-famous Observatory – Tripadvisor’s #1 attraction in the United States.”
Affixed by more than 153 rigging points, Vhagar is made up of 1,700 total patterns and 600,000 inches of sewn seams. The giant dragon was created in partnership with creative agency Giant Spoon and fabricated by Bigger Than Life Advertising Inc. The company’s President Mark Bachman was a manager on the Empire State Building’s King Kong installation in 1983.
The “House of the Dragon” takeover included a photo opportunity with the iconic Iron Throne, a visit from the “House of the Dragon” cast, and an interactive photo booth on the 80th Floor. This partnership with Max is just one of several recent events at the Empire State Building which have garnered global attention, which include partnerships with Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 x WhatsApp, Outward Bound, and “Star Wars.”
The Empire State Building Observatory recently underwent a $165 million reimagination that included the addition of a dedicated visitor entrance, an immersive museum with nine galleries, brand-new, bespoke Observatory Host uniforms, and a new 102nd Floor Observatory with unmatched views. The reimagined Observatory Experience has been voted the #1 attraction in the U.S. in Tripadvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Awards: Best of the Best for two consecutive years.

Sometimes people do things that have extreme spiritual significance without even realizing it.
When I watched Jonathan Cahn’s latest video on Tuesday, I knew that I had to write about what just happened in New York City. From June 16th through June 19th, a 270 foot dragon was wrapped around the Empire State Building.
In addition, giant banners that featured dragons with the ominous message “All Must Choose” were draped over iconic landmarks all over the Big Apple, and restaurants throughout the city were featuring dragon-themed menu items. All of this was being done to promote the second season of “House of the Dragon,” and those behind this campaign probably did not intend to deliver any sort of a spiritual message. But as Jonathan Cahn correctly observed in his new video, there are times when people do things that are highly symbolic without even understanding the true significance of their actions.
In Revelation chapter 12, Satan is identified as “the Devil”, “the dragon” and “the great dragon.”
7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, 8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. 9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
In Revelation chapter 20, Satan is once again identified as “the Devil” and “the dragon.”
And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, 3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.
Considering what the Bible has to say, should we be alarmed that a colossal dragon was just perched atop the Empire State Building?
In the middle of this month, a gigantic 270 foot dragon was literally coiled around the upper portion of New York City’s most famous skyscraper.
No, it’s not just you — there is, in fact, a giant inflatable dragon clutching the Empire State Building’s spire 102 stories above midtown Manhattan. It’s Vhagar, the 270-foot (at least in this version) dragon queen in the “Game of Thrones” prequel “House of Dragons,” which premiered its second season Sunday night. It’s part of an immersive “House of Dragons” experience from HBO Max and the Empire State Building to promote the show, and includes a photo op with the famed “Iron Throne,” among other features.
It took an enormous effort to pull this off, and the scale of the project was absolutely immense.
The huge version of — Vhagar, Aemond Targaryen’s dragon from Game of Thrones — appeared Sunday wrapped around the top of the iconic skyscraper. It was secured by 153 rigging points, 1,700 pattern pieces and more than 600,000 sewn stitches.
It was a very impressive promotional stunt.
But those behind it also sent a very powerful spiritual message without even realizing it.
New York is the financial center of our nation. Without the stock exchange and the financial institutions that are based in the Big Apple, we wouldn’t even have a functioning economy.
And the entire city is absolutely saturated with evil.
In addition to the giant dragon on the Empire State Building, massive banners featuring enormous dragons with the message “all must choose” were hung on the New York Stock Exchange, the Manhattan Bridge, Penn Station, Citi Field, Rockefeller Center, the Brooklyn Bridge, Grand Central Station and in Washington Square Park.
We have never seen anything quite like this before.
On top of everything else, restaurants all over the city were selling “show-branded menu items” to their customers.
In real life, restaurants and bars are running House of the Dragon pop-up promotions featuring show-branded menu items with #TeamGreen or #TeamBlack packaging and décor June 10–16. The houses waging war are Leon’s Bagels, Murray’s Bagels, John’s of Bleeker, Roberta’s, Ray’s, The Flower Shop, Mile End Deli, and Gray’s Papaya. They span the kingdom from Bushwick to the Upper West Side. A kingdom pulled violently atwain!
Needless to say, these unprecedented promotional efforts got a ton of attention. And in general, most New Yorkers were responding positively.
Some fans of the original show, which won 59 Emmy Awards in its eight-season run, said it’s been exciting to watch the ads take over the city in recent days. “I’m a big, big fan,” said Ali Wong of Austin, Texas. “It’s interesting to see all the banners and everything you know, in Grand Central Station even. There’s so much advertising in the city and everywhere you go you see it.”
Of course this promotional campaign was not just limited to New York City.
It is being reported that there were digital banner “takeovers” of major landmarks all over the globe.
Cities around the world followed suit, with digital (CGI) banner takeovers of iconic landmarks and buildings, including the Eiffel Tower (Paris), Sugarloaf Mountain (Rio de Janeiro), Sydney Harbor, Al Ula (Saudi Arabia), Petronas Twin Towers (Kuala Lumpur), Obelisco Buenos Aires, Marina Bay Sands (Singapore), and many others.
Interestingly, this is all happening during “the Year of the Dragon” according to the Chinese calendar. Is that just some sort of a bizarre coincidence?
We live at a time when the battle between good and evil is building up to a grand crescendo, and events that are talked about in the book of Revelation are starting to take place right in front of our eyes.
So was it just an accident that iconic locations all over the planet were just “taken over” by dragons and “all must choose” was the primary slogan of the campaign?
The Bible does speak of a time in the future when the Antichrist will take authority over our planet, and when that day arrives everyone will be forced to make a choice.
Those that submit to the Antichrist and take the Mark of the Beast will be allowed to live, and those that refuse will be put to death.
Whether those behind this promotional campaign realized it or not, the truth is that they just foreshadowed a choice that billions of people will be faced with someday.

Revelation’s End-time Sign of Satan was seen over the world’s financial capital that will help serve to implement the diabolical evil plan of Satan enslaving humanity in the End-time giving him authority and power over the world.
This end-time sign of Satan has been exploding across world media and already taking power among nations starting the transition to this coming prophetic evil empire.
There has been an absolute explosion of many films and TV shows with the dragon. As humanity is now captured and enthralled by the dragon as the world has truly entered the age of the dragon.
Which has now led to this sign of Satan being lifted up over the world’s financial capital as a forewarning that soon the world financial system will be used by the dragon to enslave humanity as foretold in the Revelation Prophecy.
For the Holy Bible Revelation of Lord Jesus Christ clearly describes that in the end-time, the sign of Satan will appear which is the dragon.
These events and conditions happening now are pointing to the nearing fulfillment of the Last Days prophecies at the end of this age revealing it’s time to prepare now for the nearing appearance of Jesus Christ for His Church by being born again spiritually into the Kingdom of God as Jesus said we must (John 3:3-5) and His Apostles who were authorized (Matthew 16:18-19) described how (Acts 2).
Watch the video below to see how these events and conditions happening now are Biblical signs connecting to the Last Days prophecies warning we are nearing the end of this age of grace at the appearance of Jesus Christ.

As we move towards 2025, the prospect of a Trump presidency is freaking Japan out. Their economy will face both a stronger dollar and a manufacturing crisis that threatens to crush the Yen further. Here’s what you must know!
China and the Federal Reserve were two of the largest buyers of Treasury bonds since 2010. Now both China and the Fed are selling Treasuries: in China’s case to reduce their risk of US dollar holdings, and in the Fed’s, to rein in runaway inflation that resulted from decades of Fed policy error. Japan is the largest foreign holder of US government debt. However Japan now runs chronic trade deficits, instead of surpluses, and have also scaled back their Treasury holdings. The US government will be rolling over $8 trillion in maturing paper in 2024, and will need to finance an additional $3 trillion in new deficit spending. Almost all this new issuance will be absorbed by US investors, who will demand far higher yields to compensate for higher inflation and opportunity cost. While the world was busy watching the collapse of crypto exchange FTX, the US Federal Reserve system made an important move. Speaking at the Singapore FinTech Festival on November 4, a senior official from the New York Federal Reserve surprised many in the audience by announcing that for the past several months, the New York Fed has been developing a “wholesale” central bank digital currency (CBDC) designed to speed up transfers between banks around the world.
For those who thought the United States was behind in the digital-currency “space race,” the news was welcome. In a subsequent white paper on the project—named Project Cedar—the New York Fed explained that it has already completed stage one of testing and proved that international currency transactions could be done both quickly and safely through the blockchain. But buried in the technical details was a revealing line on the ambitions of the project: The goal of the new network is “to reduce settlement risk in cross-border, cross-currency transactions.” The message? We see what the world is doing on CBDCs, and the United States is not going to be left behind.
According to new Atlantic Council research, the United States, thanks to Project Cedar, has moved into development of a central bank digital currency and joined its colleagues at the European Central Bank, the Bank of Japan, and the Bank of England in making the leap forward. All of these jurisdictions have different projects (some, such as the United States, are focused on wholesale, while others, such as the eurozone, are hard at work on a “retail” digital currency that could be used to buy an espresso). Many of these central banks, including the Fed, have not actually decided to issue a CBDC—for that, most of the central banks will need legislative approval. And there are major privacy and cybersecurity challenges to address before most Americans open up their phones and use the digital dollar.
The evolving demands of modern banking consumers will force incumbent banks in the United States to adapt to remain competitive in a rapidly changing banking landscape.
In recent years, the banking landscape in the United States has undergone significant change. In a market where the average relationship with the primary bank is 16.6 years, and over two-thirds of households established their banking relationship over two decades ago, yet 25% of households are at least thinking about switching their primary bank if not actively looking.
Driven by the amalgamation of digital innovation, growing customer expectations, and cost considerations, more households than ever before are likely to switch their primary banking provider.
Exploring the factors behind this trend with insights from RFI Global’s MacroMonitor study uncovers valuable insights into the evolving demands of modern banking consumers. It shines a light on incumbent banks, and their need to adjust to stay competitive in an ever-changing banking landscape.
The impact of digital banking
Technology has revolutionized the way people interact with their banks. And one of the most prominent drivers of increased switching behavior is the rapid advancement of digital banking.
Digital banking platforms offer unparalleled convenience; convenience that tech-savvy consumers find particularly appealing. The features provided by digital banking platforms go beyond basic transactions. Real-time transaction alerts, budgeting tools, and personalized financial insights – tools that help consumers make informed financial decisions and manage their money more effectively – have become greatly desired. As a result, banks that fail to offer a robust digital experience risk losing customers to their more technologically advanced competitors.
In addition to digital innovation, customer experience has become a critical factor in the decision-making process. People are increasingly prioritizing customer service when choosing their banking providers. Our data shows that in the US, banks that offer superior customer support, often facilitated through digital channels like chatbots and 24/7 customer service, are more likely to attract and retain customers. Prompt and effective resolution of issues is crucial in building trust and loyalty.
Personalization is another key aspect of the customer experience. Banks that leverage data analytics to offer tailored financial advice and personalized product recommendations are more attractive to consumers. Personalized experiences make customers feel valued and understood, enhancing their overall satisfaction. Again, this ties into technology and the extent to which banks are investing in digital innovation. Since fewer people prefer to manage their finances in person, digital personalization is becoming key to retaining that personal touch.
What about the cost of banking?
In a time where households face rising rent, bills, and general living costs, financial competitiveness is unsurprisingly another significant factor driving switching.
Choosing to bank with one of the larger incumbent banks can come with a range of fees, from account maintenance to ATM fees. Some consumers look to digital-only banks as they are often perceived to offer lower fees for basic banking services. This cost advantage of banking small is a compelling reason to switch for some consumers.
And the importance of digital innovation?
There is a recurring theme around switching. In one way or another, it comes down to a bank’s ability to deliver meaningful digital and technological innovation to its customers. Digital servicing is deeply ingrained in the lives of young consumers. As a result, switching intentions are higher among younger households in the US, rising to 28% of Gen Z and Millennial households.
The trend of switching banks can be characterized by a notable shift from the larger incumbent banks in favor of digital-only banks, such as Chime, Synchrony, and SoFi. For many, these digital-only banks offer superior digital experiences, lower fees, and innovative features that appeal to US consumers. The ease of account management and the availability of advanced tools make digital-only banks an attractive alternative to the larger incumbent banks.
Despite the rise of digital banking, the ability to speak with a knowledgeable representative is still invaluable for many, which is why physical branches remain important to some households. For more complex banking needs, such as applying for a loan or seeking financial advice, consumers often prefer in-person channels.
While it is true that the human element of banking cannot be entirely replaced by digital interactions, especially for customers who value personal connections, the delivery of effective live chat and video chat services is certainly helping to bridge that gap.
National banks vs. digital-only banks
Now, I don’t expect the digital-only banks to unseat the national banks, such as Wells Fargo, Chase, and Bank of America, anytime soon. However, the US retail banking market does look different when we focus on new-to-bank relationships and the effects of recent customer switching activity.
Focusing on households that opened their primary bank account within the last two years we see Chime accounting for 7% of primary banking relationships, a greater share than Bank of America and Wells Fargo. Collectively, Chime, Synchrony, and SoFi account for 1 in 10 primary bank accounts opened in the last two years.
A significant shift in preference among US consumers
The increase in switching behavior among US banking consumers is driven by a desire for better digital experiences, lower costs, and most importantly superior customer service. While digital banking plays a crucial role in this shift, physical branches are still relevant for certain banking needs and customer demographics. Banks that can strike a balance between digital innovation and excellent customer service, with personalized experiences will be best positioned to attract and retain customers in this evolving retail banking landscape.

The U.S. is behind many other countries but it’s very much in the race towards a cashless society. Digital payments will eventually dominate the mix, says futurist Brett King, as traditional currency and payments gradually fade away.
“He had his cash money, but you couldn’t pay for food with that. It wasn’t actually illegal to have the stuff, it was just that nobody ever did anything legitimate with it.”
—“Count Zero” (1986) by William GibsonThis predictive cyberpunk novel’s viewpoint that cash will come to be a fringe thing may be coming sooner than many bankers think.In 2022 the use of cash declined by its largest margin in the history of cash. It was perhaps the largest decline on record at least since 650 BC.But this decline is scattered. In the U.K. cash declined a whopping 35% in the first year of the pandemic, 2020. Even prior to the pandemic, cash use had been declining in the U.K. by approximately 15% per year, at least since 2017.Globally several countries are now on the verge of being functionally cashless. That means that while cash is still available in the economy, both individuals and businesses can quite happily operate in a totally cashless environment. For countries like Australia and New Zealand, where the ability to use cash is still considered a basic human right, this presents a functional problem for government and banking.There are many government, central banking and industry-level studies that have shown the overall cost benefits of electronic payment systems over cash. A 2017 study at Purdue University, for instance, that looked at three global markets — Sweden, the United States and India — concluded there are widespread benefits to cashless operations for society at large.To be clear, most governments, at least privately, now consider cashless economies a clear policy imperative and standard. Cashless economies have much higher rates of income tax compliance, much lower rates of financial crime and fraud, and much lower banking system costs related to processing of cash. The cost of regulation and supervision in the banking system also declines dramatically in cashless environments.
But in places like the U.S., the debate continues. Last year, in ATM Marketplace, Triton Systems’ Daryl Cornell summarized things this way:
“Cheerleaders for cash argue that payment choice is a fundamental right. Supporters point out that cash works, even during disruptions to the digital payment infrastructure. Cashless advocates will argue that the use of cash, particularly for purchases under $100, continues to decline and that non-cash payment methods are far more convenient. Both positions are correct.”
Reliance on Cash Increasingly Brings Expenses in its Wake
Yet the costs associated with cash use are only increasing as more businesses and consumers trend towards digital acceptance.
In “A Case Study on Monetary Fraud in a Cashless Economy,” Iyer et al, 2017, the Purdue study mentioned earlier, a statement is made that continues to stand up:
“Findings show that losses suffered due to abuse of cash as a payment instrument are much higher than that of card instruments. The cost of implementing and maintaining a system for electronic payment instruments are less than half of the cost of currency operations. A society with less cash could hence potentially be more resistant to abuse of payment instruments and more cost efficient as compared to a cash-based one.”
Access to cash remains a core social problem when there is a large unbanked population.
In markets like the U.S., where access to identity documentation (that is required for opening a bank account) remains tenuous for a small, but significant percentage of the population, the decline of cash use is problematic. Covid boosted digital financial inclusion, with the global number of unbanked declining rapidly from 1.6 billion to 1.4 billion during the pandemic years. Since 2010 we have reduced the number of globally unbanked from 2.7 billion people, but this is through the use of mobile wallets, identity frameworks, and, more recently, real-time pay-by-bank infrastructure.

The U.S. loses more than $1 trillion a year in tax revenue due to tax avoidance practices, including activity in the untaxed cash economy. According to the national taxpayer advocate’s estimates, 52% of this revenue gap arises because of under-reporting by self-employed taxpayers, driven in large part by cash payments. For this reason, there is a very strong imperative for a cashless economy in markets like the U.S.
While some business owners might think the 3% fee for processing credit cards is a significant cost, research over the last decade has shown that cash handling costs U.S. retailers a great deal more —between 4.7% and 15.3%. This means for every $100 sale a business is paying between $4.70 and $15.30 just to manage their cash, well above card processing or ACH fees. In the U.S. it is estimated by the National Retail Federation that roughly $50 billion of the total $112 billion lost in retail from “shrinkage” in 2022 was simple cash theft, often by employees. Between 2018-2021 ATM cash withdrawals in the U.S. declined at a rate of 10.1% per year, falling to 3.7 billion (2021).
Eliminating financial exclusion, along with remaining reliance on cash, should be a goal of every modern economy today. But it is certainly a complex issue that not only relies on the broad acceptance of digital payments, but also on the basic availability of identity infrastructure, along with mobile penetration, general digital inclusion efforts, and affordability of internet access. Hence why the Merchant Machine’s study on cash reliance, cited earlier, recorded both unbanked numbers and internet access as core metrics in assessing cashless functionality globally.
Just the term “unbanked” is somewhat loaded, however. The Federal Reserve largely defines the word in terms of lack of access to financial products, specifically credit-related products. Australia and the U.K. tend to define this segment of citizens more sensibly, in my view, as “vulnerable consumers.” Within lower-income segments the view that banking comes with lots of costs and hidden fees can’t really be argued against, and this still clouds decision making for some when it comes to use of mainstream financial services.
Studies by the Financial Health Network show that unbanked and underbanked Americans spent $189 billion in fees and interest payments on mainly alternative financial services products in 2018 alone. (The most recent FHN study indicates that the figure had risen to $347 billion in 2022.)
The FDIC estimates that for that same year some 63 million Americans fit the category of unbanked or underbanked. That would mean that on average that these vulnerable citizens were paying some $3,000 in annual financial services costs — significantly more than many wealthy Americans pay for access to banking services. And they are likely paying more now.
The 2023 FinHealth study by the Financial Health Network showed that in the U.S. lack of affordable financial services continues to be a chronic problem for financially vulnerable households, with this segment spending 14% of their income on interest and fees, compared with 1% for financially healthy Americans.
Making basic banking affordable and transparent has not been an overarching goal of the traditional banking industry in economies like the U.S., Australia and the U.K. Most traditional banks talk about the unattractive nature of lower-income households in terms of margin and push this back on policymakers to solve, while offering certain programs to appease the various stakeholders involved.
Mobile wallets, however, have shown much greater operational cash efficiency on basic day-to-day banking functions. Players like MPesa, PayTM, Alipay, WeChatPay, WeBank and NuBank have shown the ability to provide a comprehensive range of financial services to lower- and middle-income (LMI) households while remaining not only commercially viable, but showing strong growth and referral metrics. This modality shift provided by wallets has allowed us to reform thinking around broader financial inclusion, specifically when we have historically argued the cost of banking and payments infrastructure.
This is one of the reasons for the more rapid decline in cash use across the globe today. Mobile wallets are finally giving access to affordable, basic banking services — something that has eluded the traditional industry. Mobile wallets are the greatest improvement in financial access in the last hundred years, and the broad success of such will inevitably drive towards the minimization of cash.
The news: While big banks close their branches, neobanks are stepping in to serve cash-only customers.
Cash is disappearing: The move to digital banking, fast-tracked by the pandemic, created an upheaval regarding the availability of cash—or rather, the lack thereof.
Before the pandemic, the percentage of cashless businesses was low. The US was at 8% and the UK notched 10%. Those percentages jumped to 31% and 60% respectively, as of March 2021, per Square.
Cash made up 18% of point-of-sale transactions globally in 2021, according to FIS’ Global Payments Report. And FIS expects global cash transactions to decline to 10% by 2025.
Banks are also cutting costs where they can to enhance their tech budgets. And digitizing means shuttering physical locations.
On average, US branches cost between$200,000 and $400,000 per year to run, according to Mercator Advisory Group figures cited by Reuters.
More than 200 UK bank branches have closed this year, with another 272 scheduled to close by December, per FinExtra.
And between 2012 and 2021, the number of US bank and credit union branches shrank by 16.1% to 76,964, according to Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) data.
Neobanks fill the gap: But as cash becomes less accessible through traditional means, neobanks see an opportunity to step in.
Most neobanks offer access to ATMs to withdraw cash from their accounts.
Some neobanks, like Current, Chime, and Varo Bank, also let customers deposit cash into their accounts by visiting locations like CVS and Walmart.
And while ATMs might become harder to find over time, it wouldn’t be surprising if more neobanks let customers make withdrawals at similar locations.
The big takeaway: Banks are pushing for a cashless society, mostly because they would benefit from having full control over consumers’ financial lives. But a cashless society won’t happen overnight—if ever.
More than 5 million adults in the UK rely on cash as their primary payment method, per the Bank of England.
A slew of trades, like bartending, food service, and contracting, earn a portion of their income as cash.
In the US, 6.2% of rural households are unbanked, according to a report by the FDIC, and banks continue to shutter in those areas.
Rather than alienating these customers from the economy, neobanks are seizing the opportunity to connect with them—and may be the very thing that keeps them afloat. That seems like an effective way to gain customer loyalty.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a milestone document in the history of human rights. Drafted by representatives with different legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world, the Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 (General Assembly resolution 217 A) as a common standard of achievements for all peoples and all nations. It sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected and it has been translated into over 500 languages. The UDHR is widely recognized as having inspired, and paved the way for, the adoption of more than seventy human rights treaties, applied today on a permanent basis at global and regional levels (all containing references to it in their preambles).
Preamble
Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world,
Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people,
Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law,
Whereas it is essential to promote the development of friendly relations between nations,
Whereas the peoples of the United Nations have in the Charter reaffirmed their faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person and in the equal rights of men and women and have determined to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,
Whereas Member States have pledged themselves to achieve, in co-operation with the United Nations, the promotion of universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms,
Whereas a common understanding of these rights and freedoms is of the greatest importance for the full realization of this pledge,
Now, therefore,
The General Assembly,
Proclaims this Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction.

“Elyx” is essentially a variation of the word “elixir,” meaning a magical potion or a substance believed
to have extraordinary healing powers, and in the context of Absolut Elyx vodka, it signifies the high
quality and craftsmanship of the product, drawing on the idea of a “luxury elixir” due to its “lyx”
(Swedish for luxury) component in the name; the root of “elixir” comes from Arabic “al-iksīr” which
ultimately traces back to Greek “xērion” meaning “drying powder.”.
Key points about “Elyx”:
Origin: Derived from “elixir”
Meaning: A potent or magical liquid, often associated with healing or longevity
“Lyx” in Swedish: Means “luxury”
Application: Absolut Elyx uses the name to denote a premium vodka with high quality production

Welsh llug “gleam, glimmer;” Old Irish loche “lightning,” luchair “brightness;” Hittite lukezi
“is bright;” Old English leht, leoht “light, daylight; spiritual illumination,” German Licht,
Gothic liuhaþ “light.”
masc. proper name, from Latin Lucianus (source also of French Lucien), a derivative of Roman Lucius, from lux (genitive lucis) “light” (see light (n.)). The Hellenistic Greek writer
(c. 160 C.E., his name is Latinized from Greek Loukianos) was noted as the type of a scoffing wit. Hence Lucianist (1580s) in reference to that sort of writer; it also was “the name of two sorts of
heretics” [OED].
Roman goddess of childbirth, late 14c., from Latin Lucina, literally “she that brings to the light,”
fem. of lucinus, from luc-, stem of lux “light” (see light (n.)).
early 15c., “luminous, bright;” 1590s, “evident, lucid,” from Latin luculentus “full of light, bright,
splendid,” from the stem of lux “light” (from PIE root *leuk- “light, brightness”).
1590s, “bright, shining” (a sense now obsolete or restricted), from Latin lucidus “light, bright,
clear,” figuratively “perspicuous, lucid, clear,” from lucere “to shine,” from lux (genitive lucis)
“light,” from PIE root *leuk- “to shine, be bright.”
Sense of “easy to understand, free from obscurity of meaning, marked by intellectual clarity” first
recorded 1786. Lucid interval “period of calm or temporary sanity” (1580s) is from Medieval Latin lucida intervalla (plural), common in medieval legal documents (non est compos mentis, sed gaudet lucidis intervallis, etc.). The notion probably is of a period of calm and clear during a storm. Related: Lucidly; lucidness (1640s).
Old English Lucifer “Satan,” also “morning star, Venus in the morning sky before sunrise,” also an epithet or name of Diana, from Latin Lucifer “morning star,” noun use of adjective, literally “light-bringing,” from lux (genitive lucis) “light” (from PIE root *leuk- “light, brightness”) + ferre “to carry, bear,” from PIE root *bher- (1) “to carry,” also “to bear children.” Venus in the evening sky was Hesperus.
Belief that it was the proper name of Satan began with its use in Bible to translate Greek Phosphoros, which translates Hebrew Helel ben Shahar in Isaiah xiv.12 — “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!” [KJV] Because of the mention of a fall from Heaven, the verse was interpreted spiritually by Christians as a reference to Satan, even though it is literally a reference to the King of Babylon (see Isaiah xiv.4). Sometimes rendered daystar in later translations.
As “friction match,” 1831, short for Lucifer match (1831). Among the 16c. adjectival forms were Luciferian, Luciferine, Luciferous. There was a noted Bishop Lucifer of Cagliari in Sardinia in the 4th century, a strict anti-Arian regarded locally as a saint.
The first animated version of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was created through the United Nations partnership with French digital artist YAK (Yacine Ait Kaci) – whose illustrated character Elyx is the first digital ambassador of the United Nations. The animation uses symbolic movements to bring to life the 30 Articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
“Yacine” is a French variation of the Arabic name “Yasin,” which originates from a chapter (Surah) in the Quran called “Ya-Sin” – meaning the name essentiallytranslates to “Ya-Sin” and is considered an epithet of the Prophet Muhammad, signifying “rich” or “prosperous” in Arabic culture; it is commonly used in North African regions That is too much. It is time for the United Nations (U.N.) to be explicit in its attention to digital human rights. Human beings now have not only a human identity, we have a digital identity through our digital interactions/presence. Whether our digital identities are products of personal choice or the actions of others, we are all autonomous digital data subjects. Human rights principles of human dignity and security of the person echoing throughout human rights resolutions, declarations, and treaties are equally applicable to the Internet, in its perpetual transmogrification.
On April 2, 2020, U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said, “One thing that’s clear is that we’re seeing the mass digitalization of human relations with the [COVID-19] crisis, and that will have an inevitable impact.” Even before COVID-19, the Secretary-General said hostile uses of cyberspace “demand a much more vigorous collective response. . . . We have a collective responsibility to give direction to these technologies.
” This “collective responsibility” has been the leitmotif of U.N. discussions and resolutions about the Internet for 20 years, yet human rights principles directing that collective responsibility are still undeveloped. The U.N. has consistently emphasized technology as a tool for human rights, rather than something in and of itself that needs to be the subject of human rights. Before COVID-19, formalized aspirational attention to digital human rights was overdue. During and after COVID-19, digital human rights principles must be counted among fundamental human rights principles.
The U.N. Charter’s Preamble defined the U.N.’s purpose, in part, “to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of 1 men and women and of nations large and small, and . . . to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom.” The U.N. more specifically articulated these rights in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Subsequent treaties and declarations elaborated fundamental principles in the UDHR to specific concerns; now is the time for the U.N. to use its authority, responsibility, and jurisdiction to declare digital human rights.
This paper looks at where the U.N. has been and where it needs to go to assert digital human rights principles and provisions. It traces the U.N.’s attention to digital issues thus far and opines on these processes. Because the scope of digital issues impacting human rights is almost boundless and ever-evolving, the highlight is on online mugshots and revenge porn, examples of human rights abuses impacting human dignity and security of the person. Other human rights concerns may be extrapolated from this focus. The paper looks to the U.N. Charter and the UDHR for a legal context to address digital human rights issues. It then looks at specific articles within the UDHR through the lens of digital human rights concerns and examples of first articles from issue-specific treaties and declarations developed from the UDHR. Finally, this paper recommends a path forward for the protection of digital human rights with a sample of articles for a U.N. Declaration of Digital Human Rights.

When we hear the word snake in the Bible most people’s minds go right to Genesis 3 and the crafty talking serpent in the Garden of Eden. But there is so much more!
There are three Hebrew words that get translated as serpent or snake: seraph, nakhash, and tannin. And on top of that there are at least five Hebrew words that get translated as various kinds of snakes, like vipers, adders, asps, cobras (see epheh (660), akshuv (5919), pethen (6620), tsepha (6848), sh’phi’phone (8207).
We’ll take a look at the three of the main words translated as serpent, starting with…
Nakhash
The first serpent in the Bible is the most famous one… the cunning snake who confused the humans with words:
Genesis 3:1-7
Now the serpent [w-ha-nakash] was more cunning than any animal of the field which YHWH God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God really said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?”
The woman said to the serpent [ha-nakhash], “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’”
The serpent [ha-nakhash] said to the woman, “You certainly will not die! For God knows that on the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will become like God, knowing good and evil.”
When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took some of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves waist coverings.
The snake, who was created by YHWH (as we read in chapter 3, verse 1) was an agent of chaos, and it used words to muddle up Eve’s thinking. She tried to correct the snake (God didn’t say we couldn’t eat from any tree… just one tree) but she ended up making an erroneous declaration of her own (God said we couldn’t even touch the forbidden tree). God never said they could not touch the tree. By this point Eve’s mind had already been led astray.
Even the prolific New Testament writer, Paul, saw the Genesis 1 serpent as a trickster. In his letter to the Corinthians he said:
2 Corinthians 11:3
But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceivedEve by his trickery, your minds will be led astray from sincere and pure devotion to the Messiah.
This first snake was never identified as ha-Satan (The Adversary) but his actions were undeniably adversarial to YHWH. The serpent made a derogatory accusation against God’s character, implying that YHWH held back the fruit of this one forbidden tree merely to maintain His dominance over humans… so that they would not “become like God” (even though He had already made them “in His image”). This was a character assault designed to cause chaos and confusion for the humans who had walked beside God in the Garden without ever doubting His character before. And it worked.
As soon as they bought into the snake’s lies and disobeyed God, they moved quickly from guilt, to fear, to blame. When God called upon Eve and Adam and pointed out their disobedience, Adam was quick to blame Eve, and Eve was quick to blame the snake:
Genesis 3:8-13
Now they heard the sound of YHWH God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of YHWH God among the trees of the garden.
Then YHWH God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?”
He said, “I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.”
And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree from which I commanded you not to eat?”
The man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me some of the fruit of the tree, and I ate.”
Then YHWH God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” And the woman said, “The serpent [ha-nakhash] deceived me, and I ate.”
YHWH saw this quick progression of sin and cursed not Eve and Adam, but the source of the evil:
Genesis 3:14
Then YHWH God said to the serpent [ha-nakhash],
“Because you have done this,
cursed are you more than all the livestock,
and more than any animal of the field;
on your belly you shall go,
and dust you shall eat all the days of your life.”
At the beginning of its story the snake was described as more cunning(arum) than all the beasts of the field, which was a positive trait. But at the end of its Garden story the snake was more cursed (arur) than all the beasts of the field. It’s a clever little word play (from arum to arur) which highlighted a shift in the snake’s story. This creature was not originally slithering on its belly in the dust, but after it caused damage to the human spirit, it was cursed to eat the dust from which humankind came… it was forced to eat the building blocks of what it destroyed.
Genesis 3 was the story of humanity’s fall and how they went from seeing YHWH face to face, to being exiled from the Garden as a result of their own rebellion. The snake was the agent of chaos and death… the crafty salesman of their destruction. After buying into the snakes deception the human nations eventually reflected the snake. Their intended image (bearing God’s reflection) became tarnished and instead they looked more and more like the seller of death, chaos and destruction… the crafty snake.
The prophet Micah used this dust eating imagery to describe the foreign nations, saying:
Micah 7:17a-18
“They [nations] will lick up dust like a snake [k-nakhash], like reptiles of the earth.”
We are meant to be the image bearers of God, but we look ever so much more like snakes in the grass, licking up the dust.
Power over the Serpent
By the time Moses came onto the scene YHWH made it clear that He had power over the rebellious agent of death.
When God told Moses that He would send him to the Pharaoh to set His people free, Moses had some apprehension:
Exodus 4:1-5
Then Moses said [to YHWH], “What if they will not believe me or listen to what I say?For they may say, ‘YHWH has not appeared to you.’”
YHWH said to him, “What is that in your hand?”
And he said, “A staff.”
Then He said, “Throw it on the ground.”
So he threw it on the ground, and it turned into a serpent [l-nakhash]; and Moses fled from it.
But YHWH said to Moses, “Reach out with your hand and grasp it by its tail”—so he reached out with his hand and caught it, and it turned into a staff in his hand— “so that they may believe that YHWH, the God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you.”
YHWH could turn a staff into a snake and a snake into a staff. The snake had no power over Him but He had complete power over it. The serpent as the agent of death in the Garden had no power in the presence of the Agent of Life. This miracle (turning wood into a serpent) was the inspiration Moses needed to give him the strength to face Pharaoh. YHWH, the God of Life, was on his side.
Job described YHWH as the Great Creator and he noted that Sheol (the grave) had no power over God (Job 26:6). The fleeing snake, as the symbolic agent of death, would be pierced through:
Job 26:13
“By His (YHWH’s) breath the heavens are cleared;
His hand has pierced the fleeing serpent [nakhash bariakh]”.
Death, evil, and chaos would not win. Even when it ran to escape into the shadows, YHWH would find it and destroy it.
The Bite & Venom of a Snake
YHWH’s victory over death and evil would be the triumphal end to the epic story of humanity. But in the meantime the serpent would have plenty of time to attack and do significant damage.
When Jacob prophesied about his many sons he said this of Dan:
Genesis 49:17-18
“Dan shall be a serpent [nakhash] in the way, a horned viper in the path,
that bites the horse’s heels, so that its rider falls backward.”
In poetic form Jeremiah reflected the fate of Israel at the hands of the Babylonians using similar words from Jacob’s prophecy of Dan:
Jeremiah 8:16-17
From Dan there is heard the snorting of his horses;
At the sound of the neighing of his stallions the whole land quakes;
For they come and devour the land and its fullness,
the city and its inhabitants.
“For behold, I am sending serpents [n’khashim] among you,
vipers for which there is no charm; and they will bite you,” declares YHWH.
God sometimes allowed the nations against Israel to defeat them. He wanted to bring His people back to Him but they were so lost that they fell prey to the enemy.
Amos 9:3b
[YHWH:] And though they hide themselves from My sight on the bottom of the sea,
I will command the serpent [et ha-nakhash] from there, and it will bite them.
They were bitten by the evil ones, and brought to a very low point. At the depths of despair, when there’s nothing humanly possible to be done about the situation, humans inevitably turn their Creator. The lower we go, the quicker we look up and seek God’s help. YHWH just waited for the call so He could express His faithfulness and bring them back to Him:
Jeremiah 29:13-14
And you will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. I will let Myself be found by you,’ declares YHWH, ‘and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and all the places where I have driven you,’ declares the LORD, ‘and I will bring you back to the place from where I sent you into exile.’
But it wasn’t just the nations of idolatry who were like snakes. According to Proverbs, being addicted to alcohol was like being bit by a snake:
Proverbs 23:29-35
Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaining?
Who has wounds without cause? Who has red eyes?
Those who linger long over wine, those who go to taste mixed wine.
Do not look at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup,
when it goes down smoothly;
In the end it biteslike a snake [k-nakhash] and stings like a viper.
Your eyes will see strange things and your mind will say perverse things.
And you will be like one who lies down in the middle of the sea,
or like one who lies down on the top of a mast.
“They struck me, but I did not become ill; they beat me, but I did not know it.
When will I awake? I will seek another drink.”
Evil bites in many ways. It seeps into our nations, it seeps into our brains, it seeps into our habits and slowly, but surely, it poisons everything it touches. The venom of a snake was the perfect poetic metaphor to describe the actions of the wicked:
Psalm 58:3-5
The wicked have turned away from the womb; these who speak lies go astray from birth.
They have venom like the venom of a serpent [nakhash]; like a deaf cobra that stops up its ear,
so that it does not hear the voice of charmers, or a skillful caster of spells.
Psalm 140:1-3
Rescue me, YHWH, from evil people;
protect me from violent men who devise evil things in their hearts;
They continually stir up wars.
They sharpen their tongues like a snake [nakhash];
the venom of a viper [khamat awkshuv] is under their lips. Selah
Nakhash Saraph (the snake that burns!)
The word saraph comes from the verb “to burn” and the three mentions of saraph, found in the Torah (twice in Numbers 21 and once in Deuteronomy 8), are all accompanied by nakhash. Fiery very likely was referring to pain caused by the serpent’s bite… it burned like fire.
In the book of Numbers the Hebrew people, wandering in the wilderness, were attacked by serpents that burned:
Numbers 21:4-9
Then they set out from Mount Hor by the way of the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; and the people became impatient because of the journey. So the people spoke against God and Moses: “Why have you brought us up from Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we are disgusted with this miserable food.”
Then YHWH sent fiery serpents [et ha-n’khashim ha-s’raphim] among the people and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died.
So the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, because we have spoken against YHWH and against you; intercede with YHWH, that He will remove the serpents [et ha-nakhash] from us.” And Moses interceded for the people.
Then YHWH said to Moses, “Make a fiery (serpent) [saraph], and put it on a flag pole; and it shall come about, that everyone who is bitten, and looks at it, will live.”
So Moses made a bronze serpent [n’khash n’khoshet] and put it on the flag pole; and it came about, that if a serpent [ha-nakhash] bit someone, and he looked at the bronze serpent [n’khash ha-n’khoshet], he lived.
It’s quite interesting that the Hebrew word for serpent [nakhash] shared the same root as the Hebrew word for bronze [nekhash] as well as the Hebrew word for divination/omens [nakh’ash]. The bronze serpent linguistically stood out as two very similar sounding words: n’khash n’khoshet and it represented a great (shall we say fiery) signal of God’s power.
This dramatic omen in the wilderness was a lesson not to be forgotten:
Deuteronomy 8:11, 15-16
“Be careful that you do not forget YHWH your God by failing to keep His commandments, His ordinances, and His statutes which I am commanding you today…
…[It was] He who led you through the great and terrible wilderness, with its fiery serpents [nakhash saraph] and scorpions, and its thirsty ground where there was no water; He who brought water for you out of the rock of flint. In the wilderness it was He who fed you manna which your fathers did not know, in order to humble you and in order to put you to the test, to do good for you in the end.
Interestingly, centuries after Moses lived on the earth this bronze snake figure was kept for posterity and the people turned it into an item of worship. The Hebrew people even named it Nekhushtan; it’s meaning was a cross between the Hebrew word for serpent (nakhash) and the Hebrew word for bronze (nekhoshet).
But God never wanted His people to worship this metallic, man-made, item. The bronze serpent had one purpose and it was fulfilled during the wilderness wandering of the Hebrew people. Humans were never to worship any image, most certainly not a bronze serpent made by human hands. The item, through which God expressed His power, had become an idol long after God stopped using it. But a king of Judah would step in and take down the lifeless serpent that Moses had once raised up for God’s purpose:
2 Kings 18:1-4
Now it came about in the third year of Hoshea, the son of Elah king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah became king. He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned for twenty-nine years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Abi the daughter of Zechariah. He did what was right in the sight of YHWH, in accordance with everything that his father David had done.
He removed the high places and smashed the memorial stones to pieces, and cut down the Asherah. He also crushed to pieces the bronze serpent [nakhash ha-nakhoshet] that Moses had made, for until those days the sons of Israel had been burning incense to it; and it was called Nehushtan [Bronze Serpent: N’khush’tan].
This fascinating story of venomous snake bites and the healing bronze serpent was referred to by Yeshua (Jesus) when He spoke to Nicodemus in their evening meeting:
John 3:14-15
[Jesus to Nicodemus:] No one has ascended into heaven, except He who descended from heaven: the Son of Man.And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes will have eternal life in Him.
Moses’ bronze serpent had been lifted up to heal all who looked upon it. Yeshua would also be lifted up. He was raised up on the cross and all who truly saw and believed in Him would be healed. He was the new exalted image we were to look upon; He was the Healer we all needed.
Seraph/Seraphim
In the Torah the word saraph (fiery/burning) was matched with the word serpent (nakhash), but by the time Isaiah wrote about these creatures he dropped the word serpent. Isaiah was the only writer in the Nevi’im portion of the Bible (the Prophets) that mentioned seraph/seraphim. Although Isaiah did not use the phrase nakhash saraph, it had been well established in the Torah so that Isaiah could safely drop the word serpent but still maintain the image.
He spoke twice of winged saraphs [saraph m-ohpheph] (Isaiah 14:29 and Isaiah 30:6) and in the sixth chapter of his writings he reflected a poetic vision of fiery, winged, snake-like creatures who surrounded the throne of YHWH:
Isaiah 6:1-8
In the year of King Uzziah’s death I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple. Seraphim were standing above Him, each having six wings: with two each covered his face, and with two each covered his feet, and with two each flew. And one called out to another and said,
“Holy, Holy, Holy, is YHWH of armies. The whole earth is full of His glory.”
And the foundations of the thresholds trembled at the voice of him who called out, while the temple was filling with smoke. Then I said,
“Woe to me, for I am ruined!
Because I am a man of unclean lips,
And I live among a people of unclean lips;
For my eyes have seen the King, YHWH of armies.”
Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal in his hand, which he had taken from the altar with tongs. He touched my mouth with it and said, “Behold, this has touched your lips; and your guilt is taken away and atonement is made for your sin.”
Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?”
Then I said, “Here am I. Send me!”
These snake-like winged creatures purified Isaiah with burning coal. Not all Biblical serpent creatures were agents of chaos and death. The seraphim were God’s divine purifying agents… in a similar manner to how God’s bronze serpent, yielded by Moses, healed and purified all who looked upon it.
Tannin
Our final Hebrew word that has been often translated as “serpent” is the word tannin.
When Nehemiah walked through Jerusalem inspecting the walls that had been broken down during the Babylonian invasion he, “went out at night by the Valley Gate in the direction of the Dragon’s Spring [eye of the sea serpent: en ha-tannin] and on to the Dung Gate” (Nehemiah 2:13).
The Hebrew words for Dragon’s Spring was en ha-tannin, literally “eye of the sea monster/sea serpent”. It was likely a descriptive name for the city fountain or spring, likely the Gihon Spring, Jerusalem’s main water source. The word tannin, which came from the same root as the Hebrew word for jackal (tan), was primarily associated with water.
We first come across this word in Genesis 1:
Genesis 1:21
And God created the great sea creatures [ha-tanninim] and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind; and God saw that it was good.
The tannin were created on the fifth day of the creation account. This was the day before land animals and humans were created. Tannin were the great creatures that lived in the water.
Job 7:12
[Job to YHWH:] “Am I the sea, or the sea monster [tannin], that You set a guard over me?”
As we mentioned earlier, when Moses was challenged by God to face Pharaoh, Moses questioned why Pharaoh would pay any attention to him. In response God had Moses throw his spear down. The spear immediately turned into a nakhash (snake). When Moses picked up the staff again, it returned to its original wooden form. Only a few chapters later Moses was challenged by Pharaoh and his sorcerers. This time YHWH called on Aaron to throw down his staff, and this time the staff turned into a tannin.
Exodus 7:8-13
Now YHWH spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, “When Pharaoh speaks to you, saying, ‘Work a miracle,’ then you shall say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh, so that it may turn intoa (sea) serpent [l-tannin].’”
So Moses and Aaron came to Pharaoh, and so they did, just as YHWH had commanded; and Aaron threw his staff down before Pharaoh and his servants, and it turned into a (sea) serpent [l-tannin].
Then Pharaoh also called for the wise men and the sorcerers, and they too, the soothsayer priests of Egypt, did the same with their secret arts. For each one threw down his staff, and they turned into (sea) serpents [l-tanninim]. But Aaron’s staff swallowed their staffs. Yet Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, just as YHWH had said.
The Egyptian sorcerer’s sea monsters were illusions and they were swallowed up by YHWH’s great, living, tannin… a sea creature summoned onto dry land. YHWH upped His game. It wasn’t just a land snake, this time He produced a sea serpent. YHWH never failed to impress!
The Enemy Dragon
The enemies of Israel were frequently alluded to as tannin. Jeremiah referred to king Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, as a tannin who had swallowed him up (see Jeremiah 51:34). Ezekiel called Egypt the great tannin that lived in the canals (see Ezekiel 29:3-6).
Isaiah referred to the time when YHWH made a pathway in the sea for the Hebrew people to cross over. It was because YHWH pierced the tannin (translated by many versions as “dragon”) that the Hebrew people could escape Egypt, cross the Red Sea and travel towards the promised land:
Isaiah 51:9-11
Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of YHWH;
Awake as in the days of old, the generations of long ago.
Was it not You who cut Rahab in pieces, who pierced the dragon [tannin]?
Was it not You who dried up the sea, the waters of the great deep;
Who made the depths of the sea a pathway for the redeemed to cross over?
And the redeemed of YHWH will return and come to Zion with joyful shouting,
and everlasting joy will be on their heads.
They will obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.
Those who trusted in YHWH would be protected and they would obtain the power of YHWH to take out the tannin (the monsters) in their lives.
Psalm 91:11-13
For He will give His angels orders concerning you,
to protect you in all your ways.
On their hands they will lift you up,
so that you do not strike your foot against a stone.
You will walk upon the lion and cobra,
You will trample the young lion and the (sea)serpent [w-tannin].
Every created thing, from the great sea monsters to the kings of nations, every soul, young and old, were to praise YHWH:
Psalm 148:7-13
Praise YHWH from the earth,
sea monsters [tanninim], and all the ocean depths;
fire and hail, snow and clouds; stormy wind, fulfilling His word;
mountains and all hills; fruit trees and all cedars;
animals and all cattle; crawling things and winged fowl;
kings of the earth andall peoples; rulers and all judges of the earth;
both young men and virgins; old men and children.
They are to praise the name of YHWH, for His name alone is exalted;
His majesty is above earth and heaven.
Leviathan
If the enemies of Israel were referred to as tannin. Then the greatest tannin was the greatest enemy. Leviathan stood out as the most formidable sea creature which YHWH made:
Psalm 104:24-28
YHWH, how many are Your works!
In wisdom You have made them all; the earth is full of Your possessions.
There is the sea, great and broad,
in which are swarms without number, animals both small and great.
The ships move along there,
and Leviathan, which You have formed to have fun in it.
They all wait for You to give them their food in due season.
You give to them, they gather it up;
You open Your hand, they are satisfied with good.
Leviathan was to have fun in the sea… the word translated as fun has also been translated as “frolic” and “play” and the word comes out of the root word meaning “to laugh”. The great Leviathan was created by YHWH and it was made to have fun in the sea.
Leviathan, a formidable beast of the sea, was feared by humans who did not understand that big did not always mean brutal. Nevertheless, the Leviathan became a metaphor for the big enemy of God’s people.
In one of Asaph’s Psalms (74) God was the King who conquered the great tanninim, the greatest of which was Leviathan:
Psalm 74:12-14
Yet God is my King from long ago,
who performs acts of salvation in the midst of the earth.
You divided the sea by Your strength;
You broke the heads of the sea monsters [tanninim] in the waters.
You crushed the heads of Leviathan;
You gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness.
Isaiah also represented the Leviathan as a symbol of God’s enemy. He used both nakhash and tannin, bringing us back to the adversarial serpent (nakhash) in Genesis 3 and the great dragon/sea serpent (tannin) described in Job 41. Leviathan represented God’s adversaries and God would not be defeated by them. He would conquer them:
Isaiah 27:1
On that day YHWH will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent [nakhash bariakh],
with His fierce and great and mighty sword,
even Leviathan the twisted serpent [nakhash a’qallatohn];
and He will kill the dragon [et ha-tannin] who lives in the sea.
Snakes in the New Testament
Snakes in the B’rit Chadashah (New Testament) were primarily associated with evil… from Satan and anyone who reflected His image.
In John’s vision, which was densely packed with Old Testament metaphors, he directly named the snake. This great serpent/dragon was the Satan, the mighty Accuser and God’s Adversary:
And the great dragonwas thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying,
“Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Messiah have come, for the accuser of our brothers and sisters has been thrown down, the one who accuses them before our God day and night. And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even when faced with death. For this reason, rejoice, you heavens and you who dwell in them. Woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has come down to you with great wrath, knowing that he has only a short time.”
This was the Good News at the end of the story. The blood from the Lamb of God would overthrow the serpent of old.
When Yeshua sent his disciples out to minister to the people they came back feeling quite good about themselves. They had authority over demons! But Yeshua was quick to point out their focus was on the wrong goal:
Luke 10:19-20
Now the seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name!”
And He said to them, “I watched [the] Satan [Greek: ton Satanan] fall from heaven like lightning. Behold, I have given you authority to walk on snakes [opheon] and scorpions, and authority over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven.”
But it wasn’t just Satan, the great Adversary… anyone who took an adversarial stance against YHWH was like a snake. Yeshua (Jesus) called the Pharisees and scribes “hypocrites, snakes, and the offspring of vipers heading in the direction of hell” [Greek: gehenna] (Matthew 23:29-33). Yeshua did not hold any verbal punches back:
Matthew 12:34-40
[Jesus to the Pharisees:] You offspring of vipers, how can you, being evil, express any good things?For the mouth speaks from that which fills the heart. The good person brings out of his good treasure good things; and the evil person brings out of his evil treasure evil things. But I tell you that for every careless word that people speak, they will give an account of it on the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.”
But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation craves a sign; and so no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah the prophet; for just as Jonah was in the stomach of the sea monster for three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights.
Yeshua faced the serpents and all the harbingers of death and destruction and He died on the cross at their hand. Yeshua went to the grave, but He did not remain there. He conquered death, rose up after three days and re-claimed life for anyone who wanted it. The snake in Genesis had tricked humanity and forced them out of God’s presence, but Yeshua paid the entrance fee for everyone who wanted to return to YHWH in the Garden. No snake bite and no poison would hold us back from YHWH now.
In Genesis 3 the snake was cursed with more than just eating dirt:
Genesis 3:15
“And I will make enemies of you [the serpent] and the woman,
and of your offspring and her Descendant;
He shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise Him on the heel.”
Yeshua would stamp out Satan but not before Satan would bite back. Yeshua would beat death but not without struggle and not without suffering. The cross was a painful way to triumph… but triumph He did. The great dragon, and all the little biting serpents of evil, would never win.
The prophet Isaiah looked forward to the end of humanity’s story when no agent of evil could harm those living in God’s sacred space:
Isaiah 65:24-25
It will also come to pass that before they call, I will answer; while they are still speaking, I will listen. The wolf and the lamb will graze together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox; and dust will be the serpent’s [w-nakhash] food. They will do no evil or harm on all My holy mountain,” says YHWH.
The serpent would no longer be a biting threat to God’s people; it would be left to bite the dust of its own curse. And YHWH’s people would no longer be reflections of the snake of death, destruction and chaos, but they would return to their true reflection as pure image bearers of God. It’s a beautiful conclusion to the epic human story of exile, redemption and salvation.
