Of course, on the webpage they deny that the scientists even have the capability yet totally create a hybrid/Chimera (which is an outright lie). They also say, well you can create one as long as it does not have feelings, is not able to think and is not able to reproduce. What a joke. The inclusion of ingredients or substances not declared on a food label—is a serious issue in the modern world. Most food-processing companies deal with many different food products at the same time, and shared equipment and supply chains create the risk of accidental contamination. Much more insidiously, some food providers intentionally adulterate their products, usually to save costs by passing off a less expensive foodstuff as something more lucrative. Accidental contamination or deliberate adulteration of foods take away the consumer’s ability to make informed decisions about their diet, leading to health risks and other consequences. Authorities, both inside and outside food-supply companies, devote substantial effort to assessing the integrity of their foods and ingredients, but as both inferior hygiene practices and deliberate adulteration reduce the cost of doing business, they remain tempting ways to increase profits.
Of the 665 samples, 145 contained proportions of something other than the ingredients specified on the label in high enough levels to suggest intentional fraud. The one-fifth of British meat samples found to be contaminated in this study included; samples that contained at least four different meat species, meat sold as ostrich that was actually much-cheaper beef, and lamb and goat samples containing beef and pork. The most commonly contaminated meat products were mince, sausages, kebabs, and similar foodstuffs in which processing makes the origin of the meat difficult to visually discern, especially once cooked.
The report also noted that an even larger number of samples had “incidental” inclusion of undeclared meat species low enough to suggest poor processing-equipment hygiene rather than deliberate adulteration. That is small comfort to people with religious or medical reasons for avoiding particular foodstuffs, who must face the entire food supply chain with mistrust in light of such widespread malfeasance.
Perhaps the most frustrating finding in the report, however, is that detecting food contamination and adulteration is currently limited by the availability and accessibility to suitable tests. Conventional assays based on PCR or ELISA-technology allow the analyst to check only for a small number of possible contamination targets and limit how many can be screened for in the available time and budgetary constraints. In most cases, this means that food safety agencies and internal quality controllers check only for the most common possible contaminants—typically other domestic animals processed in the same facilities or those commonly used as adulterants. It generally isn’t possible to check for nearly as many targets as would be ideal. A determined fraudster with, for example, access to more unusual domestic animals, or even local wildlife, can therefore elude detection. Contracting out more expansive analysis to specialized laboratories is costly, and developing and using in-house assays for additional targets is both expensive and time-consuming, preventing many businesses from attempting either.
One technology that can be applied to avoid these limitations is next-generation sequencing (NGS). This state-of-the-art technique enables screening for multiple species in a sample with a single test.The method is growing in popularity, and some contract testing laboratories are beginning to offer NGS services for food testing. This year Thermo Fisher Scientific will commercialize the first complete NGS workflow for meat, fish and plant species that can be implemented into the routine testing laboratory.
The workflow utilizes kits developed by SGS, a leading inspection, verification, testing and certification provider, to uniquely barcode all DNA present in a sample. The uniquely labeled DNA from multiple samples can then be mixed. Thermo Fisher’s Ion Torrent instrumentation is then used to prepare and sequence the barcoded DNA. Next the DNA sequences are compared to reference sequences in an extensive database of meat, plant and fish DNA developed by SGS to determine the species present. The pooled sequencing dramatically speeds up the screening process and simplifies the workflow with the resulting output specific to each sample thanks to the barcoding system
By reducing the difficulty, necessary expertise and cost involved, this workflow makes it possible to test for thousands of possible contaminants. The workflow has been successfully used simultaneously for meat- plant- and fish-based product analysis in a single NGS run. The whole process, from DNA extraction to species identification, takes under 24 hours. Much of the workflow is automated via the Thermo Scientific Ion Chef and Ion GeneStudio S5 Systems together with automatic software-based analysis for species, reducing the need for handling steps and the workflow’s learning curve. This speed and simplicity makes this the first credible solution for in-house screening of samples for species identification in routine food analysis laboratories.
In a sample of 89 veggie burgers collected from a range of brands, Clear Labs identified several problems with “substitution, hygienic issues, and pathogenic contamination.”
Testing also found two samples that contained beef DNA, one containing rat DNA, and one containing human DNA.
One purported “black bean burger” was found to contain no black beans at all, according to the study, while four of the veggie burgers tested did contain pathogenic DNA that could lead to food poisoning.
Also notable was the fact that the study, which examined the contents of all kinds of burgers, found that 23.6 percent of vegetarian patties contained “some form of discrepancy between product and label,” while just 13.6 percent of all samples tested indicated a discrepancy. Of the samples found to be missing ingredients listed on their labels, all 14 were vegetarian products.
“Our findings suggest that the beef industry as a whole has benefited from stringent regulation and aggressive testing requirements,” Clear Labs said in its report.
“Vegetarian products, however, were shown to have “pervasive issues in food quality.”
The study does not cite specific brands but Clear Labs says its findings should help inform vegetarian burger producers “of unknown risks and the potential need for more stringent safety measures, and manufacturers should ensure there is clear, consistent, and adamant labeling of best-handling practices at home on all products.”
American hot dogs are often greeted with deep suspicion by almost everyone that eats them, with the nutritional content assumed to be as low as the mystery of their contents is high. Nevertheless, millions are consumed in the United States, with some figures suggesting at least 1 billion packs are sold every single year. Well, there’s some bad news for hot dog connoisseurs today: Namely, human DNA has been found in 2% of the samples. In vegetarian hot dogs, human DNA was found in two-thirds of them, as reported by USA Today.
Human DNA does not, of course, mean there are chunks of human in these hot dogs. There is no cannibalism on the sly happening here. Unfortunately, the report does not go into any detail as to what “human DNA” could actually mean. So it’s probably a bit of dandruff or something. No need to panic.
This wasn’t the only significant finding of the report: 10% of the vegetarian hot dogs contained meat, entirely defeating their raison d’être. Also, 14.4% of all hot dogs were problematic in one way or another, such as having so-called “hygienic” issues – meaning that a “non-harmful contaminant” has been inadvertently “introduced” to the hot dog – or “substitution issues,” meaning ingredients turned up that weren’t on the label. For example, in a variety of products, chicken, beef, turkey and lamb appeared specifically where they were not supposed to. Perhaps oddly, two-thirds of all hygiene issues were reported to be in the vegetarian products.
The research has been done by Clear Foods, an organization that specializes in “genomic technology,” basically breaking down the molecular components of something and assessing where each component originally came from. By looking at 345 hot dogs and sausages from 75 different brands sold at 10 different food retailers, the company, a subset of Clear Labs, came to their conclusions.
The report points out that “pork is a particularly unwelcome substitution in any food” when the religious backgrounds of some consumers are taken into account, finding that pork turned up erroneously in 3% of its samples, mainly in chicken and turkey sausages.
The online report concludes with this philanthropic sentiment: “While some of these substitutions, hygienic issues, other variances, or off-label ingredients may be permitted by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), our scientific disclosure allows you, as the consumer, to decide whether the variance or problems meet your personal standard in your buying decision.” How thoughtful!

— — The food that’s a staple of American cookouts is getting some scrutiny for some unexpected ingredients.
Clear Food, an independent company that analyzes food at the molecular level, found that 14.4 percent of the hot dogs it tested were “problematic.”
Clear Food reported that it found human DNA in six of the 345 samples, or 2 percent of all samples tested. Four of the six samples that tested positive for human DNA were vegetarian products.
Other ingredients such as chicken, lamb, turkey and beef showed up in samples that were not listed on the product’s packaging, according to Clear Food, which did note that no pork was found in the “100% Kosher” products it tested.
For non-meat eaters the results are particularly eye-opening: 10 percent of the vegetarian products tested contained meat (chicken in the veggie breakfast sausages and pork in the veggie hot dogs), and four of the 21 vegetarian samples had “hygienic issues.” Moreover, the amount of protein listed in some of the vegetarian products exaggerated the amount of protein in the item by as much as 250 percent, according to the report.
Clear Food does not release the names of the poor-performing products. It does, however, score products based on hygiene, safety and accurate labeling. Major brands including Butterball, Boar’s Head, Hebrew National, Oscar Meyer, Jennie O and Trader Joe’s all received high marks. Clear Food is the consumer outreach arm of Clear Labs, a B2B food analytics startup based in California. The hot dog and sausage report was self-funded, according to Clear Food.
The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, a trade group that represents hog dog and sausage manufacturers, called the report a “publicity stunt.”
“We are unfamiliar with [Clear Food] and have a difficult time determining what to make of their methods or their findings,” NHDSC spokesperson Janet Riley told ABC News in a statement today. “What we do know is that any product collected in the marketplace was inspected and passed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This publicity stunt changes nothing about the fundamental safety of America’s carefully regulated and inspected hot dogs.”
Marion Nestle, a professor of public health and food studies at New York University and the author of several books, including “Food Politics: How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health,” said the report’s findings are not entirely surprising.
Human DNA in samples “is a sign of lots of touching with human hands,” she told ABC News. “DNA testing produces no end of surprises but I seriously doubt that parts of human remains are incorporated into even the cheapest sausages.”
“Anything that’s made from meat byproducts is likely to contain parts that don’t pass the ‘yuck’ test,” she added. “It’s always a good idea to make sure that ground meats of any kind are well cooked.”
A spokesperson for Clear Food said that human DNA “degrades the quality of food” but is less of a public health concern. The DNA found in the samples likely came from “hair, skin, finger nail or saliva that was accidentally mixed in during the manufacturing process,” according to Clear Food.
According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Americans spent $2.4 billion last year on hot dogs and another $2.74 billion on sausages. Americans eat 20 billion hot dogs and 14 billion servings of sausages each year, according to the council.
PULLMAN, Wash. — A sausage at Washington State University has made history.
WSU received U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorization to have gene-edited pigs enter the food chain for human consumption — in this case, as tasty, German-style sausages.
“It’s important for a university to set the precedent by working with federal regulators to get these animals introduced into the food supply,” said Jon Oatley, a professor in the School of Molecular Biosciences in WSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine. “If we don’t go through that process, all of the research we’re doing is for naught because it will never make it out into the public.”
Oatley uses the gene-editing tool CRISPR to improve genetic traits in livestock and is working toward an FDA approval for a line of gene-edited pigs. He undertook the investigational food use authorization process for five gene-edited pigs to demonstrate that food made from the animals is safe to eat and that it is possible for an academic institution to achieve this type of FDA authorization. Gene-editing can make changes in an organism’s DNA that could occur in nature or through selective breeding but would take much longer without a tool like CRISPR.
The FDA authorization is investigational, and limited to these particular pigs, but shows that gene-editing livestock to quickly produce desirable traits for improved food production is a viable strategy for helping feed the planet’s growing population.
The 2-year-old pigs were processed at the WSU Meat Lab, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture inspected the meat as it does with all meat products. Working with the Meat Lab, meat scientist Blake Foraker made some of the pork into sausages, which will be used in catering services that raise travel funds for the student members of the WSU Meat Judging team.
The pigs were originally gene-edited in a way that would enable researchers to use them to sire offspring with traits from another male pig. Known as surrogate sires, this technology first gene-edits male animals to be sterile by knocking out a gene called NANOS2 that is specific to male fertility. These animals can then be implanted with another male’s stem cells that create sperm with that male’s desired traits to be passed on to the next generation.
Essentially a high-tech form of selective breeding, surrogate sire technology can greatly expand dissemination of valuable genetics in livestock. It has the potential to not just improve meat quality but the health and resilience of livestock in the face of changing environmental conditions, a critical goal for increasing protein sources in developing nations.
The surrogate sires’ progeny, which are themselves not gene-edited, have not yet been reviewed by the FDA for possible inclusion in the food chain. Securing the investigational approval for these five pigs required clearing a number of hurdles. The FDA waives some fees for nonprofits like universities, but by the time the process was completed, Oatley’s team had spent two years and approximately $200,000 collecting data for this authorization.
“The original intent in making these animals was to try to improve the way that we feed people,” he said. “And we can’t do that unless we can work with the FDA system to get these animals actually into the food chain.”
Only one other organization, a company by the name of Acceligen, has had a gene-edited animal receive the FDA ok to enter the food supply. In 2020, the FDA made a low-risk determination for products made from “Slick-Haired Cattle” who are gene-edited to have coats that increase the animals’ resilience to higher temperatures. Other companies have had genetically-modified animals approved by the FDA, but the approach was transgenic which is a different technology involving inserting DNA from outside species into the genome of an organism. Gene-editing is a modern, cutting-edge technology that works only within a species’ DNA and can make changes that could come about naturally or through traditional breeding practices.
The public often holds many misconceptions about gene-editing, Oatley said, and hopes that the WSU example will help dispel misinformation and improve perceptions of this technology.
“There’s a trust that comes with university-based research,” he said. “At WSU, we’re all about the science. We just want to make sure the research is valid, and the animals we produce are healthy.”

When this news leaked, Campbell soup responded to an outraged public by severing all ties with Senomyx. However, PepsiCo has maintained their relationship with the company, saying the collaboration is necessary for creating low-calorie, tasty products for their consumers.

Fetal cell lines were first introduced more than 50 years ago. For the lines involved in the COVID-19 vaccines, they started with two aborted fetuses in 1973 and 1985.
A researcher in the Netherlands obtained these cells, according to Casanova. It’s currently unknown how or why he did so.
Since then, these cells have been multiplied millions of times, which is where we get the term: fetal cell lines. “These cells are reproduced and grown literally day after day, used in a lot of research endeavors, including developments of vaccines,” Casanova said.
