President Joe Biden has faced ridicule online after mistakenly addressing Vice President Kamala Harris as president in a video that has been viewed more than 1.1 million times on Twitter.

Biden made the gaffe on Monday during an event at the White House celebrating Diwali, a Hindu holiday. Biden used the opportunity to wish Harris a happy birthday, as her 58th birthday was on October 20.

As he congratulated Harris, Biden said: “Happy birthday to a great president.”

The moment was shared by the RNC Research Twitter page, which is run by the Republican National Committee.

Sports commentator and OutKick host Clay Travis shared the video and captioned it: “Joe Biden just wished Kamala Harris a happy birthday and said she’s a great president.

“I can’t believe I’m giving Democrats advice, but hide him in his beach house. Every time he speaks the red wave gets higher.”

Journalist and conservative commentator Benny Johnson also commented and said: “Joe Biden, again, calls Kamala Harris the ‘President.'”

This is not the first time Biden has referred to Harris as the president rather than the vice president during a speech.

Early into his presidency in March 2021, while discussing his response to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, he made the blunder again.

“Now when President Harris and I took a virtual tour of a vaccination center in Arizona not long ago, one of the nurses on that, on that tour injecting people, giving vaccinations, said that each shot was like administering a dose of hope,” he said.

In addition to this gaffe, on Monday, Biden also mispronounced the name of the new U.K. prime minister, Rishi Sunak, in a video that has also gone viral with over 460,000 views.

During the event, Biden said: “Whether it’s the United Kingdom, where just today, we’ve got news that Rishi Sunak is now the prime minister. As my brother would say, ‘go figure.'” However, Biden appeared to pronounce the prime minister’s name like “Rashid Sanook.”

The White House has previously defended Biden and his gaffes during his speeches, as well as his ability to lead. They have insisted he has been checked by physicians regarding his mental well-being.

In November 2021, White House Physician Dr. Kevin O’Connor wrote in a memo and concluded that Biden remained a “healthy, vigorous 78-year-old male who is fit to successfully execute the duties of the presidency.”

Newsweek has contacted the White House for comment.
