In the current state of our Earth, there is an overabundance of catastrophic events. Too many to cover in any one article or series of articles. I have broken the weather down to Earthquakes, Severe Weather, and Flooding. I may have to add categories as things progress.
In this series of articles, I will be addressing the issues related to Dams, Levees and Flooding. For more on these topics please visit my series entitled: It’s a Dame Shame. I will just be posting updates from the web as often as I am able. Each month, I will start a new article in the series.
This season of FLOODING has crippled much of the United States. It has not let up for several months now. So much of our nation is under water. This first article, talking about how the water has nowhere to go, was posted in March. The flooding has been continuous for months now. The ground is beyond saturated. Levees and Dams across the South, East, and Midwest are in serious danger.

The Midwest has been under relentless weather warfare this entire year. The rain does not let up. The flood gauges remain in flooding mode. Where are all these people? No one knows! These are the farmers who have been growing our food for generations and they have lost EVERYTHING. Just like the folks down in the Bahamas. WILL WE JUST SIT BACK AND TURN OUR HEADS WHILE THEY DISAPPEAR??? JUST LIKE THE FOLKS FROM PARADISE, CA! or FROM HOUSTON/HURRICANE HARVEY, or HAWAII,KILAUEA VOLCANO. THIS CAN HAPPEN TO ANY OF US! THEY CAN CAUSE FLOODING, HURRICANES, SUPER HIGH WINDS, TORANDOS, TSUNAMIS. Who can stand against the WEATHER? ONLY GOD CAN SAVE US NOW! PRAY, PRAY, PRAY!!!

Flood Threat Remains in Central U.S., Which Has Already Received Plenty of Rain
By Linda Lam 3 days ago – weather.com
- Repeated rounds of rain, which will be heavy at times, will bring the threat of flooding.
- Parts of Kansas received 10 inches of rain Thursday.
Parts of Kansas were slammed with over 10 inches of rain Thursday morning, and more rain and flash flooding are expected in parts of the central U.S. through Saturday.
More than 10 inches of rainfall fell southeast of Topeka, near Lone Star and Centropolis. Several water rescues occurred in Lone Star, where several homes were surrounded by water. Flooding and a water rescue were reported Thursday near Ottawa. Flooding closed roads in Garnett and Colony.
Early Friday, heavy rain prompted flash flood warnings in parts of Kansas, farther west than on Thursday.
Several streets in Ailene, Kansas, were flooded and impassable Friday morning. Wells, Kansas, measured just over 8 inches from Thursday morning into Friday morning and several roads were closed. Roads were closed and multiple water rescues were reported on Friday morning near Solomon, Kansas.

Update 7/22/19
By Kyle Elliott, AccuWeather meteorologist –
After a deadly heat wave that was responsible for four deaths in Maryland baked the northeastern United States over the weekend, violent thunderstorms and torrential downpours are sweeping across the region and signaling an end to the torrid weather.
The storms are forming along the leading edge of an abnormally cool air mass advancing southeastward across the Midwest.
“When an unusually strong cold front slashes into an unusually hot and humid air mass, severe weather can be expected, and that will be the case on Monday,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Adam Douty said. “The strongest thunderstorms will produce flooding downpours and damaging wind gusts.”
Officials had to perform at least seven water rescues around Pittsburgh early Monday morning after heavy rain struck, according to KDKA. The flooding also closed multiple roads around the region.
DANGEROUS FLOODING: Penn Hills/Plum border near Schemp Auto. Plum Creek is up over road by what looks to be about 3 ft. First responders just arrived. This is right below Unity Church. Cars submurged. #turnarounddontdrown #pawx @NWSPittsburgh #weather #pgh #flooding
Rounds of drenching rain and thunderstorms moving eastward through the Ohio and Tennessee valleys on Monday will intensify as they move into the mid-Atlantic later Monday afternoon and evening. The hot and humid air still holding its ground east of the Appalachians will serve as the fuel necessary for thunderstorms to rapidly intensify and expand in coverage.
Cities most at risk for feisty storms on Monday include Allentown, Philadelphia and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Trenton and Atlantic City, New Jersey; New York City; Wilmington and Dover, Delaware; Richmond and Charlottesville, Virginia; Baltimore and Washington, D.C.
Although AccuWeather meteorologists do not see the threat for tornadoes as being a big concern on Monday, a brief isolated spin-up or two cannot be ruled out.
“Flight operations may be halted for a time at airports throughout the region,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski said. “It may also be a slow ride home during the evening rush hour as motorists can face reduced visibility and a heightened risk of vehicles hydroplaning.”
The strongest storms are expected to cross the Interstate 81 and 95 corridors during the afternoon commute, so slow travel and widespread delays should be expected.
Trees and power lines can be brought down by any gusty thunderstorm and result in power outages. In addition, shingles can be torn off roofs, and loose outdoor objects can be tossed around and potentially be turned into dangerous projectiles.

How dangerous is it for untrained bystanders to perform water rescues?
Dangerous heat pushes AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures to 100-110 F in the NortheastThere will also be an enhanced risk for flooding from Monday afternoon through Monday night from the central Appalachians into the mid-Atlantic as heavy thunderstorms repeat over the same areas.
While a general 1-2 inches of rain is forecast in this swath, the hardest-hit locations could receive as much as 4-5 inches of rain. Flooding of streets and low-lying areas will be common through Monday night and some smaller streams and creeks may not be able to handle the higher rainfall rates and could overflow their banks.
“Even in the absence of severe weather, residents in the path of Monday’s storms will face disruptions to outdoor plans, travel delays and lightning dangers,” Pydynowski said.
Be sure to move indoors at the first sighting of lightning or clap of thunder. As soon as thunder is heard, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.
Because the front will only slowly crawl eastward into Tuesday, clouds and rain may linger along and east of the I-81 corridor through a good portion of the day on Tuesday.
Although the risk for severe weather will be confined to southeastern Virginia and the Carolinas on Tuesday, there is still concern for heavy rain to aggravate or trigger new flooding problems in southeastern New England.
“Travelers can anticipate a several-hour period of poor driving conditions with flight delays in southeastern New England, potentially including in Boston and Providence, Rhode Island,” Pydynowski said. “At the very least, those with vacation plans on Cape Cod should think of indoor activities.”
Temperatures will be slashed by some 10-20 degrees Fahrenheit on Tuesday from Washington, D.C., to Philadelphia in comparison to Monday’s high temperatures. Highs throughout most of the mid-Atlantic and New England will be held to the 70s on Tuesday.
A much welcome reduction in the oppressive humidity will follow by the middle of the week in the wake of the wet weather.
High temperatures that reached the century mark in Baltimore and parts of Philadelphia over the weekend will be replaced by highs in the 80s by midweek.
With much lower humidity accompanying the cooler air, AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures that were between 105 and 115 over the weekend will be replaced with RealFeels in the middle to upper 80s.
For residents sick of the sweltering heat and humidity, the September-like air mass will provide a much safer setting for prolonged, outdoor activities such as hiking, running, biking and golfing.
The pleasant air and dry weather should stick around through at least the end of the week before muggier air begins to creep back into the Northeast by the weekend.

“Potentially historic” flooding threatens Southern states
https://www.cbsnews.com/video/hurricane-warnings-issues-along-the-louisiana-coast/
/ CBS/APScientists are warning that historic flooding could soon deluge parts of several Southern states along the lower Mississippi River, where floodwaters could persist for several weeks. The flood threat in the South will be discussed Thursday, when the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration releases its 2019 spring outlook.Experts plan a briefing on their flood forecast at the National Water Center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Thursday’s report is aimed at helping emergency managers and other safety officials to prepare for flooding.Flooding in Southern states this spring will be “potentially historic,” NOAA said in an advisory.
Rapidly melting snow in the upper Midwest is contributing to flooding that will eventually make its way downstream to the Gulf Coast, forecasters have said.
The expected surge of water from the north is unwelcome news in parts of Mississippi. In the western part of that state, the Mississippi River is already swollen and has been flooding some communities unprotected by levees since last month.
One Mississippi region protected by levees is also flooding. That’s because smaller rivers can’t drain into the Mississippi River as normal because a floodgate that protects the region from even worse flooding by the big river has been closed since Feb. 15.
Around Rolling Fork, Mississippi, townspeople first noticed water rising from swamps near the Mississippi River in late February. The water eventually invaded some homes in that community, about 40 miles north of Vicksburg.
Major flooding is already occurring this week on the Mississippi River near several Southern cities including Arkansas City, Arkansas; Natchez, Mississippi; and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, according to river gauges and data from NOAA.
The specter of major flooding on the Mississippi River upstream from New Orleans is a more perilous situation now than in years past, some researchers believe. That’s partly because the river floor has risen significantly higher over the years as sediment has collected in the river bottom, Louisiana State University hydrologist Yi-Jun Xu found.
The situation is so serious that Xu believes a “mega flood” could overpower a giant flood control structure north of New Orleans and send the Mississippi River rushing down another path entirely and creating a new route to the Gulf of Mexico. That would allow the Gulf to push saltwater upstream into the river, ruining the drinking water supply for metropolitan New Orleans, according to a summary of Xu’s 2017 presentation to the American Geophysical Union.
Last month, a massive storm dropped an “incredible” amount of rain in the South, dropping as much as one foot to 1.5 feet of rain in some areas of northern Mississippi, Alabama and into Tennessee.
NOAA’s forecast comes as rampaging rivers continue to rise in the upper Midwest, destroying bridges and roads and isolating farming communities. Experts say the cost of the flooding will likely top $1 billion.
Tropical Storm Barry: Residents brace for flooding threat in New Orleans
New Orleans — The National Weather Service issued a hurricane warning for parts of the Louisiana coast as Tropical Storm Barry threatens to blow ashore. Heavy rains and a dangerous storm surge are expected.
In response, a state of emergency was declared and the National Guard was activated in Louisiana. The storm system improvements were made after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and are about to be put to the test.
In low-lying areas south of New Orleans, some residents heeded the warnings: Stock up, pack up, and in some parishes and evacuate. The preparations also include closing massive flood gates and tying shrimping boats down.
In New Orleans, storms that unleashed flash-flooding Wednesday were a fresh reminder of what a deluge can do. Mayor LaToya Cantrell said drainage pumps are working but said, “We cannot pump our way out of the water levels and the waterfalls that are expected to hit.”
All eyes are on the levees that protect the city. The forecasted crest was revised down to 19 feet and the Army Corps of Engineers said Thursday it does not expect any overtopping.
- “CBS Evening News with Norah O’Donnell” debuts July 15 at 6:30 p.m. ET.
Sandy Rosenthal, an Army Corps critic who lived through Katrina, said no one should let their guard down.
“A model is exactly that, it’s an educated guess. If it goes exactly as planned, hopefully this water won’t overtop, but it might not go as planned,” Rosenthal said.
In Plaquemines Parish, there are some mandatory evacuations. Some are using ferries to get out ahead of the storm. From there, you can see how swollen and swift the Mississippi River already is well before the storm comes ashore.
President Trump tweeted late Thursday urging residents in the storm’s path to follow directions from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

DANGER! 24 Inches Rain Possible for New Orleans – Houston as Tropical Storm Forms If the Mississippi River breaches the levee system designed to hold it on its present course, it would cripple America’s agricultural and petrochemical industries, deal a potentially fatal blow to New Orleans, and change the course of American history.Said one government weather forecaster: It’s time to start grasping the reality of what Barry could do to New Orleans over the next 3-5 days. Lets start with Katrina. In 2005 prior to Katrina, the Mississippi river level was at 3 feet above sea level. A massive 13 foot storm surge brought the river to 16 feet. Due to recent flooding, the MS river is already at 16 feet. A surge of 3-5 feet is expected from soon-to-be-Barry, bringing forecasted surge to 19-21 feet Saturday morning. The levees can handle surge up to 20 feet before failing. This unfortunate series of events – an early-arriving tropical storm coming while the Mississippi river is already flooded – poses an existential threat to the entire city of New Orleans. Now is the time to issue evacuation orders. If the government waits much longer, it will be too late.

Hurricane watch in Louisiana, mandatory evacuations issued as Barry expected to drop up to 20 inches of rain
A brewing tropical weather system in the Gulf of Mexico forced mandatory evacuations in parts of Louisiana on Thursday, as a potential hurricane is expected to spark flash flooding in places like New Orleans still drying out from torrential rain.
The National Hurricane Center said Tropical Storm Barry is located about 95 miles south-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River is expected to strengthen into a hurricane by late Friday and make landfall by early Saturday along the Louisiana coast. Barry is the second named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season.
“This is crawling across the Gulf of Mexico, which means there is still a little bit of time for this to change and it also means the longer it moves, the slower it moves, the longer the rain can pile up,” Fox News Meteorologist Adam Klotz said Thursday on “FOX & friends.”
NEW ORLEANS, GULF COAST FACE FLOODING THREAT FROM LIKELY TROPICAL STORM BARRY
As of 11 a.m. Thursday, the system had sustained winds of 40 mph and was moving west at 5 mph. A hurricane watch was in effect for the Louisiana coast from the mouth of the Mississippi River to Cameron, La., while a tropical storm warning stretched along the coast from the mouth of the Pearl River to Morgan City.

An additional tropical storm watch was in effect for the Mississippi coast east of the mouth h of the Pearl River to the Mississippi/Alabama border in addition to Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas, including metropolitan New Orleans.“The system is expected to produce total additional rain accumulations of 10 to 15 inches near and inland of the central Gulf Coast through early next week, with isolated maximum rainfall amounts of 20 inches,” the NHC said. “Rainfall amounts exceeding 6 to 9 inches have already occurred across portions of the New Orleans metropolitan area, which has resulted in flooding.”
Klotz said Thursday that just the initial rain bands from the system created major flooding across the New Orleans area.
“There’s going to be a lot more rain before all is said and done,” he added.
Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards declared a state of emergency Wednesday and said National Guard troops and high-water vehicles will be positioned all over the state.
“The entire coast of Louisiana is at play in this storm,” he warned.
NEW ORLEANS, ALREADY GRAPPLING WITH EXTREME WEATHER, MAY FACE HURRICANE BY WEEK’S END
On Wednesday, New Orleans got an early taste of what may be in store in the days ahead, as torrential rains paralyzed rush-hour traffic and stalled cars around the city. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell said Thursday the city’s water pumps are “working at optimal capacity,” but that flooding is a threat because slow-moving, heavy rains are expected from the storm.
“We cannot pump our way out of the water levels expected in New Orleans,” Cantrell said.
Mandatory evacuation orders were issued for parts of Plaquemines Parish starting at 6 a.m. Thursday, FOX8 reported.
Plaquemines Parish President Kirk Lepine said the order was issued as a cautionary measure in response to the historically high water levels being recorded in the Mississippi River. Similar evacuations were ordered in Jefferson Parish.
“We’ve never experienced a high river like this before in such an early period of the hurricane season. The unknown is what’s got us to a little concerned,” Lepine told FOX8. “We want the public to heed to our warnings. If we asked you to evacuate, if we ask you to move, please find a way.”
Up to 10,000 people are affected by the evacuation orders in Plaquemines Parish, according to Nola.com.
A mandatory evacuation was also issued for Grand Isle beginning at noon on Thursday.
“If anyone has vehicles, boats, or campers in low areas they should bring them to higher areas until this storm has passed,” Mayor David Camardelle said in a statement. “All of our pumps are up and running and we also have back up pumps with Jefferson Parish on standby.”
HERE ARE THE DEADLIEST AND COSTLIEST HURRICANES TO HIT THE US MAINLAND
A spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers in New Orleans said the agency was not expecting widespread overtopping of the levees, but there are concerns for areas south of the city. The weather service expects the river to rise to 20 feet by Saturday morning at a key gauge in the New Orleans area, which is protected by levees 20 to 25 feet high.
The Corps was working with local officials down river to identify any low-lying areas and reinforce them, spokesman Ricky Boyett told the Associated Press. He cautioned that the situation may change as more information arrives.
“We’re confident the levees themselves are in good shape. The big focus is height,” Boyett said.
New Orleans officials have asked residents to keep at least three days of supplies on hand and to keep their neighborhood storm drains clear so water can move quickly.

As the water from Wednesday morning’s storms receded, people worried about what might come next.
“This is going to be a slow storm…That’s what I’m concerned about,” Tanya Gulliver-Garcia told the AP.

LATEST: Database showing lower New Orleans levee heights incorrect, officials say; overtopping unlikely
ORIGINAL STORY
Storm surge accompanying potential Category 1 Hurricane Barry may cause overtopping Saturday of much of the Mississippi river levee in the Lower 9th Ward, Algiers and St. Bernard Parish, according to Army Corps of Engineers levee data.
The National Weather Service’s Lower Mississippi River Forecast Center in Slidell expects the surge will add between 3 and 5 feet to the unusually high river in New Orleans and locations to the south, reaching as high as 20 feet at the Carrollton Gauge in New Orleans.
The river was at 16 feet at the Carrollton Gauge on Wednesday morning.
The official flood stage in New Orleans is 17 feet, but a combination of recently elevated earthen levees and floodwalls on both sides of the river in the New Orleans area protect most locations to water heights of between 20 and 22 feet.
But a map of levee heights in the New Orleans area that’s part of the Corps’ National Levee Database shows that the top of large segments of river levees along the Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans and St. Bernard Parish on the east bank, and some locations in Algiers on the West Bank, were between 18 and 19.99 feet.
Thus, a 20-foot river height could cause overtopping at those locations, something that has never happened in New Orleans’ modern history, and only rarely in St. Bernard.
Late Wednesday, a spokesman for the Corps, which oversees construction and repair of the river levees, said officials in its New Orleans District office discounted the data in the agency’s database.
“They show the levee elevations for the 9th Ward between 20 and 21 feet,” said spokesman Ricky Boyett. “Our modeling does not show overtopping of the levees in the 9th.”
He said officials are aware of one levee segment in St. Bernard near the Violet Canal “that we are evaluating and may need to flood fight if this forecasted surge holds.”
And Boyett said there’s a good chance that the way the water in the river is measured, compared to the height of levees, could provide about 8/10 of a foot of additional protection.
The river gauge on which the water levels are measured uses a 1929 datum measurement to determine its height, while the corps uses 1988 datum for levees, resulting in the height difference, he said.
Boyett said Corps officials still think there is little risk of levee failures, even if they are overtopped.
“We’re confident with the integrity — the levees are extremely robust and designed to handle a lot of pressure,” spokesman Ricky Boyett said.
Boyett also said Wednesday that the corps would consult with local levee districts to determine whether any areas need Hesco baskets — huge plastic buckets filled with sand — to increase the height of earthen levees or floodwalls. One location where they may be used is at the Violet Canal, he said.
Corps officials also are installing “stoplogs” atop the Harvey Canal Lock, a West Bank low spot, to add about three feet to its heigh to reduce the chances that it will be overtopped.
If the river does rise to 20 feet in New Orleans, Boyett said, corps officials think the surge will definitely overtop river levees south of Oakville and Caernarvon in Plaquemines Parish, allowing some water to flow into protected areas. There also could be intermittent overtopping of levees farther upriver from wave action in the river, though that would not create the constant flow expected at low areas downriver, he said.
Water overtopping the levees along the river would likely flow into internal drainage systems, and in New Orleans on the east bank, would move through canals to Lake Pontchartrain.
“On our end, we are monitoring it and we’ll pump out any related inundation to the best of our system’s ability,” said Richard Rainey, spokesman for the Sewerage & Water Board.
One low spot farther upriver happens to be the campus of the Corps’ New Orleans District office, which is built along a 3,000-foot stretch of the river along Leake Avenue in the Riverbend neighborhood. According to the levee database, the campus levees protect to water heights of between 19 and 19.7 feet, making the corps’ office one of the lowest points along the east bank river system in New Orleans.
What to put in a hurricane prep kit: Know the essentials
Published on May 25, 2017
Here are the most essential items to put in your preparation kit for a hurricane or other disaster, based on lists from FEMA and other agencies. Remember, this is for one person – families will need more food and water. And you’ll want to bring other items, like important documents, with you if you evacuate. Video by Diana Samuels, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune.In 2014, Congress authorized construction of new floodwalls that would increase protection around the campus to more than 24 feet, but only appropriated money for the project this year. The corps has been unable to begin construction, however, because of this year’s unusually long high-river period, which actually dates back to November of last year.
Corps officials had put together a stop-gap plan to reduce potential overtopping at the campus by erecting Hesco baskets. On Wednesday, Boyett said the agency expected to build the Hesco wall around the campus over the next few days. The river is expected to crest at 20 feet on Saturday.
